Alpha Host and Helper Manual (Alpha with )

Our Lady of Good Counsel Plymouth, Michigan

Winter 2019

*This manual is supplemental to the Alpha Resource Team Guide.

Prayer of St. Teresa of Avila

Christ has no body now on earth but yours; no hands but yours; no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ must look out on the world. Yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which He is to bless His people.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 2 An Introduction to Being an Alpha Host or Helper

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Thank you for your willingness to serve as a host or a helper for the next eleven weeks for the . We are very excited to have you as a part of this Alpha team. What a great joy it is to serve alongside each one of you!

As an Alpha Host, you have been chosen to lead your group through an exciting adventure to encounter Jesus. While there are many aspects to this task, there are a few basic guidelines that will ensure a rewarding experience for your guests: • Review the upcoming weekly session ahead of time, if possible. The talks are thirty minutes in length and may be viewed by visiting www.alphausa.org. • Please make sure you arrive ½ hour before the start of the session to meet with your session leader. These mandatory pre-session meetings are an opportunity to talk about the session ahead and to pray together. • Hosts and helpers should always feel free to communicate after and between sessions in an effort to ensure their small group is working well. • Pray for your guests on a daily basis.

Alpha Sessions At the beginning of the first session, the Alpha Coordinator will review the format, introduce the Session Leader, and set a welcoming a tone for everyone. In the following weeks, the Session Leader will welcome everyone and oversee all of the sessions.

Typical Alpha Session Timeline • Arrive ½ hour prior to the start of the session. Please be prompt for the pre-session meeting. • Hosts and helpers to greet their guests as they arrive. • Meals typically run thirty to thirty-five minutes in length. • Session Leader introduces the topic, as well as offers an icebreaker in the form of a joke. • Worship (typically begins in Week 2). • Meal blessing (begins in Week 4). • View Alpha talk. • Begin small group discussion (approximately forty-five minutes). • Dismissal. In the initial weeks, the Session Leader serves as the timekeeper. In subsequent weeks, the Helper tracks the time for their own group.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 3

Alpha Guidelines for Small Group Discussion • No one should feel pressured to talk. • Show mutual respect for everyone. • There is no such thing as a dumb question. • Only one person talks at a time (please, no side discussions). • Confidentiality matters. Everything that is shared in your small group remains confidential. • End sessions on time.

*Father John has kindly requested that no material, Catholic or otherwise, be distributed to your guests during the Alpha course.

May God guide and bless you as you accompany guests on this journey!

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 4 The 6 Aims of an Alpha Small Group

1. Discussion • It is vital to give people the opportunity to respond to what they have heard and ask questions. • It can be ruined by ineffective leadership, allowing dominant talk to take place by a guest or the host. • Important to start with simple questions—What do you think? What do you feel? • A good host will always be an encourager, looking at guests and being interested in what they are saying. • For many of our guests, the discussion in the small group will be the opportunity for them to be heard for the first time.

2. To model Bible Study • Encourage guests to acquire a Bible if they do not own one. • Don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know the answer, but I will find out.” • Explain the three basic questions that a guest should ask themselves about a passage: a. What does it say? b. What does it mean? c. How does it apply to our lives? • Use the opportunity to bring everyone into the discussion.

3. To learn to pray together • When a host opens in prayer, it should be done sensitively: a. Model first, with a simple prayer such as, “Dear Lord, bless this group this week.” b. To have another person lead in prayer, ask beforehand so as not to embarrass him or her. A simple “Will you ask God to give us wisdom to understand tonight’s talk?” can be used for the ask. Tell the group before starting that you’ve asked X to open in prayer tonight. • Later when closing in prayer, model first, again with a simple prayer. Ask others to join. However, do not use the “Round Robin” approach to prevent anxiety among guests. • Pray from the heart.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 5

4. To develop lasting relationships within the Body of Christ • “People come to church for many reasons, but they stay there for only one: that they make friends.” • Hosts and helpers should strive to know each person in their group well. a. Learn the guest’s names the first night. b. During each dinner, the host and helper act as hosts and facilitate conversations. c. An ice-breaker can be useful to build trust and knowledge between guests. d. If small groups create friendships, these friendships may be carried over after the Alpha course comes to a close.

5. Learn to minister to one another • Realize that groups in the initial weeks may feel particularly awkward. Over time, however, the working through you will draw your group closer together. • Minister to the guests with the power of the Holy Spirit. It is by your example that they will minister to each other.

6. To raise up future leaders on Alpha • Alpha serves as a natural leadership pipeline. • Ongoing training creates opportunities to cultivate new leaders.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 6 Reminders for Hosts

Ø Adopt a mission-minded approach to your ministry as a host. Ø Affirm every person and their contribution to the small group, even if you do not agree with their position. Listening with acceptance to each person and what they have to say is the best approach to help a guest feel welcome. Ø Attend the pre-session meetings at the start of each Alpha session. This is an important time for prayer, worship, and connecting with the overall vision and preparation for the session ahead. Please note, attendance at the pre-session meetings is not optional. This meeting is an integral component to your role on Alpha. Ø Pray throughout the week for your guests, as well as the Alpha team. Ø Refrain from pressuring a guest to speak, pray, or directly asking them to participate. Ø Steer clear of slandering any opinion, religious view, or person. Ø Be comfortable with some silence and resist the temptation to answer your own question. Ø Model humility. An effective small group leader will resist giving the “right” answer or a “biblical” answer and may even look foolish at times. However, if the guest’s answers are so far off the mark, it’s acceptable at the close of the evening for the host to summarize the discussion gently and say something like, “This is what I have come to understand. . .” Ø Be attentive to the guest who seems to be progressing at the slowest rate and make every effort to make him or her feel safe, cared for, and loved. Ø Resist arguments. No one is won into the Kingdom of God through an argument but rather by love. Ø Refrain from using Christian jargon or references that may be unknown to the guests. Ø Cultivate a safe and comfortable environment, always maintaining confidentiality in the group. Ø Encourage guests to ask questions. Ø Remain spiritually strong. Be attentive to the Holy Spirit and remember that it is His job through you to reveal the love of Jesus to your group. Ø Review the evening with your helper after guests have left. Ø Host will complete the Weekly Feedback form at the end of each session and will forward to the Alpha Coordinator. Ø Remember that a pack of breath mints might save the day!

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 7 Reminders for Helpers The role of the Alpha helper is not an insignificant one. While different from the host, it is no less important. Both hosts and helpers have a role to play in Alpha. Serve with love!

Ø Welcome all guests warmly, showing genuine care and love. Ø Learn the names of each guest, and then call each by their name. Ø Befriend guests, particularly during the meal. Get to know the guests (e.g., job, family, hobbies, favorite food, etc.) Ø Wait on your guests at table. Offer seconds and drink refills and clear the table without causing a distraction to the presentation or discussion. Ø Maintain a clean and inviting table. Ø Cultivate a safe and comfortable environment, always maintaining confidentiality in the group. Ø Keep your talking during the discussion time to a minimum. A helper should be as quiet as the quietest guest, especially in the beginning weeks. Ø If you do speak, do so briefly with the intent to spur conversation, not dialog between you and the guests, as it is the host’s role to facilitate the conversation. Ø Silence is acceptable. Refrain from jumping in and answering. Ø Refrain from using Christian jargon or references that may be unknown to the guests. Ø Remember, it’s a good idea to circle back to questions asked in prior weeks. Ø Monitor the time and give a five-minute warning to the host prior to the end of the session. Ø If your table ends prior to others, please keep conversation quiet and respectful of those not finished. Ø Review the evening with your host after guests have left. Ø Remember that a pack of breath mints might save the day!

Group Dynamics (Things you should do that guests are not aware you are doing!) • Be comfortable with Worship. You can instill confidence in the guests to join in by participating yourself. • Pay attention to subtle dynamics in the group that the host may not pick up on. Are there particular issues that should be discussed with the host? • Watch the body language of the guests.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 8 Host/Helper Notes—Session 1: Is There More to Life Than This?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

You will meet your guests for the first time at this session. Remember, this is a grace-filled opportunity to form new relationships. These relationships will be the basis for the next ten sessions of learning about who Jesus is and what He has done for us.

Building new relationships through fellowship means doing your best at creating a welcoming environment for those who will be sitting at your table. Relax, enjoy the meal, and focus on getting to know your guests.

Reminders Ø Be open and inviting. Ø Focus on the guests.

Ice Breakers 1. Name Game. • Each person is to add an adjective before their name that describes them in some way, (e.g., Active Al, Silly Sue, etc.). The host should start, followed by the helper. The second person repeats the first person’s adjective/name and then adds their combination to the list. This continues around the group until all have had a turn. 2. What made you decide to come on the Alpha Course? • Start with someone who is likely to admit they are an atheist/agnostic. This gives the rest of the group permission to say what they really think. (If you start with someone who turns out to be an enthusiastic Christian already, it may be harder for the others to feel comfortable about being honest about their lack of belief.) 3. Ask guests to respond to one the following questions: • If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you want to take with you? • If your house were on fire and you could only go back and get one thing, what would you get?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 9 Host/Helper Notes—Session 2: Who Is Jesus?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

During the last session, we spent time exploring what life is all about and why Jesus should be the center of our lives. We met some new friends and spent time learning their names and something about them.

We may have new faces this week and depending on the number (two or more), you may want to repeat the “Name Game” just to see if everyone remembers their adjective. Don’t shrug this off as it is a very important device that will help the group in the coming weeks.

Please review the Alpha Guidelines for Small Group Discussion: ü No one should feel pressured to talk. ü Show mutual respect. ü There is no such thing as a dumb question. ü Only one person talks at a time. ü Confidentiality matters. ü End promptly.

Reminders Ø Remember to arrive ½ hour early to attend the pre-session meeting to review administrative matters and to pray together with your session leader. Ø Ask your session leader any questions you may have about the Alpha process. Ø Stand by your table as guests arrive and greet them warmly. Ø Are you comfortable with silence? Remember as a host you are a facilitator, not a teacher. Allow your guest to toss the “ball” among one another. Only if the silence is a recurring “feature” of your group should the helper assist. Ø There is no prayer before meals this week. If guests ask, explain that they can pray individually. Remember, we may have those in the group who don’t know how to pray. Ø Be sure to take attendance and complete the Weekly Alpha Feedback Form. Please turn in the form to the session leader at the end of the session. Ø Alpha Guides are available to purchase for $5. Ø Starting next week, bring a dessert for your table. Please continue to do this for the remainder of the Alpha Course. You may bake or buy the dessert, whatever you prefer. Ø More than likely, over the course of a few weeks, guests will offer to bring the dessert. The idea behind the host or helper providing the dessert is to build community.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 10 Ice Breakers You may choose one of these or if you did both in the Week 1, you can just review names. Please remember that you’ll need to allow twenty to twenty-five minutes for small group discussion. If you have one or at the most two new people, rather than have everyone go through the name game, just ask the new guests to choose an adjective for themselves and then have each guest repeat their name and adjective from the prior week.

1. Name Game. • Each person is to add an adjective before their name that describes them in some way, (e.g., Active Al, Silly Sue, etc.). The host should start followed by the helper. The second person repeats the first person’s adjective/name and then adds their combination to the list. This continues around the group until all have had a turn.

2. Take an imaginary walk. • We are out walking on the church grounds and we run into Jesus. If you could ask Him one question and you knew you would get an answer, what would it be? The host should start, followed by the helper, and then allow everyone to have the opportunity to answer. The helper should jot down the questions, as you may want to look at them again throughout the sessions as they pertain to topics addressed in Alpha.

3. Does your name have a special meaning or were you named after someone special?

4. If you could talk to anyone in the world, who would it be? What would you ask them?

Discussion Questions 1. Before you watched the talk, what was your concept of Jesus? Has it changed? If so, in what way?

2. What aspects of the evidence presented today did you find convincing or unconvincing?

3. Who do you think Jesus is?

4. If you had a chance to meet Jesus, how would you feel and what would you say to Him?

5. What was your biggest takeaway from this session?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 11 Host Helper Notes—Session 3: Why Did Jesus Die for Us?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Last week we explored who Jesus is, which may produce some new questions this week as guests begin to think through what was seen, heard, and discussed in last week’s session. Helpers, please make note of these questions for future discussion or research the answers. You may choose not to write them down in front of the guests.

Reminders Ø The meal blessing will be introduced next week. We’ll remind you. Ø There shouldn’t be any new participants added to the small groups at this point. Ø Be sure to take attendance and complete the Weekly Alpha Feedback Form and turn it into the session leader at the end of the session. Ø Please make sure you conclude on time. If you feel your group has finished with discussion, don't worry about ending early. You shouldn’t feel you have to stay until the very end if the discussion seems to be finished. Please be respectful and maintain quiet for the tables that are not finished. Ø If your group appears to be bonding, the helper may suggest that it would be beneficial if guests supplied their email address or phone number if a session is cancelled. If your group is in agreement, you may wish to let them know that the information remains confidential and will not be shared outside the scope of internal Alpha communication. Make sure your guests have both your and your helper’s contact information should they need to notify you of an absence.

Ice Breakers If you need an icebreaker for this session, here is a suggestion: • Describe a time when you experienced buyer’s remorse when you may have made a major purchase that you later came to regret. What would you have done differently if you had to make that purchase again?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 12 Discussion Questions 1. Was there an illustration or story from the talk that stood out to you?

2. What is your reaction to the crucifixion of Jesus? What does the Cross mean to you?

3. There is a difference between the crucifixion of Jesus and the crucifixion of anyone else. By the visual of the book moving from one hand to another, Nicky explained that Jesus bore our sin and shame upon Himself (Isa. 53:6). Did this description help your own understanding of the crucifixion? Please explain.

4. What thought crossed your mind when you heard Jesus came to die for “you” because of His love for you? Do you believe it?

5. With modern day terms such as “Sin City” or “sinfully good,” Nicky commented that “sin” has almost become a good word in our culture. • What are your feelings about that statement? • What does the word “sin” mean to you? • Do you feel that sin is an outdated concept or is it something you think about?

6. The comment “I have no need of God, I lead a good life” was stated to a prior Vicar in . What is your reaction and thoughts on that statement?

7. Does anyone struggle with the thought that we are to forgive those who do us wrong? Please explain.

8. What did you think about the statement: “Unforgiveness is kind of like drinking poison and hoping the other person is going to die”? Does that statement hit home at all in how you handle forgiveness/unforgiveness? Please explain.

9. Nicky described the self-substitution of Maximilian Kolbe for Francis Gajowniczek. • What were your reactions/thoughts on what he did? • Could you see yourself making that decision, especially if you would be offering your life in exchange for a stranger? • Could you see yourself offering your life if you were doing it for those who were persecuting you? Are you aware that is exactly what Jesus did? How does this make you feel?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 13 10. Nicky informed us that Francis Gajowniczek spent the rest of his life going around telling everyone about the man who had so much love that he died in his place. How do you think you would respond if someone did that for you?

11. What was your reaction to Corrie Ten Boom’s response to the prison guards request for forgiveness?

12. Corrie Ten Boom stated, “Forgiveness is not an emotion; forgiveness is an act of the will and it can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.” How do you feel about that statement?

13. Is there someone you need to forgive that you feel would be nearly impossible to forgive? What do you think it would take for you to forgive that person?

14. What do you think about Nicky’s statement that the hardest thing is to forgive ourselves? Do you find it harder to forgive yourself or others? Please explain why.

15. What is your biggest take away from this session?

16. Are you aware there are two sides to forgiveness? One side requires the release of the debt owed by the person who caused the suffering you endure. The second releases you from the chains that bind your identity to the suffering.

Scripture References “We had all gone astray like sheep, all following our own way; But the Lord laid upon Him the guilt of us all.” Isa. 53:6

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 14 Host/Helper Notes—Session 4: How Can I Have Faith?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Please know that the Alpha Team is praying for all of you as we begin Session 4 of the Alpha Course.

This week is about how Christians become new persons, not the same as before. Why? In this talk, faith is talked about in a number of dimensions, of which there are three: The Word of God, the work of Jesus, and the witness of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us an experience of God’s love. One of the centerpieces of this session is the painting of Jesus standing at a door and knocking.

Our call to “go and make disciples” often involves creating opportunities for “shallow-entry points” into the faith where others can encounter Jesus. While we can’t make an encounter happen, we can set the stage.

This is really what Alpha is about—creating opportunities for the Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of our guests. In Alpha, we are encouraging people to be open to developing a friendship with Jesus.

Thank you for everything you are doing to help facilitate this encounter.

Reminders Ø Are you comfortable with silence? Remember as a host you are a facilitator not a teacher. Let the guests “toss the ball” among each other. Only if the silence is a recurring “feature” of your group should the helper assist. Ø Simple prayer before meals can be started at this session if you feel your group is ready. Next week’s session addresses prayer directly. Ø Mention the Alpha Day Away and how important it is to the Alpha Course. Please refer to Appendix A. Ø If anyone was absent the last session, you’ll want to ask for their contact information.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 15 Icebreaker Have each person make three statements about themselves: two true statements and one lie. For example, “I’ve never broken a bone. I have five sisters. I was born in Yugoslavia.” The group tries to guess which statement is the lie.

Discussion Questions 1. Was there an illustration or story from the talk that stood out to you?

2. “Faith isn’t a blind leap; it is a reasonable step based on good evidence.” Do you believe this? What evidence do you base your beliefs on?

3. What are your earliest memories or impressions of God?

4. Consider the portrait of Jesus and the door with no handle on Jesus’ side. How do you feel about this? What does the door represent to you? What does your “door” look like? Has your door looked different at various times in your life?

5. Scripture says in Rev. 3:20 “. . . I will come in and eat with them and them with me.” Note that Jesus doesn’t stop at “I will come in and eat with them,” but continues with “and them with me.” What do you think Jesus is inviting you to?

6. Some people say that they cannot be a Christian because they are not good enough and that they need to sort things out first. Nicky explained that it does not work this way: you come as you are. Are you aware that the opportunity of obtaining eternal life by becoming a Christian is not something you merit, but is truly a “free” gift from God? Why do you think God would do this?

7. “God’s gift of eternal life is a free gift, but it’s not cheap.” Nicky, while referencing Rom. 6:23, said that through repentance and faith, plus the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross, you now can have eternal life. What does this mean to you?

8. What do the words “repentance” and “faith” mean to you? Do you find that you define these words based more on feelings or facts? Please explain why.

9. Nicky talked about a “relationship with God.” What does that suggest to you? How would you describe your relationship with God?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 16 10. As Nicky stated, you cannot see the Holy Spirit any more than you can see the wind yet you can see the power and impact of both. Have you felt the power or impact of the Holy Spirit in your life? Did Nicky’s explanation help your understanding? Please explain.

11. Nicky talked about the changes that happen in our lives when we become Christians. He described that there is a movement from our heads to our hearts when the Holy Spirit is within us. The Holy Spirit allows us to feel the closeness, the love, and the intimacy of God. Are you aware that this is possible and that God longs to have this type of relationship with you?

12. What does it mean to you to have the Holy Spirit living inside you?

13. What is your biggest takeaway from today’s session?

14. Picture yourself standing at the door of your heart just staring at the handle. You can hear Jesus knocking on the other side. What will you do? Is there something in your life that is keeping you from opening the door of your heart to Jesus?

Scripture References: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.” Rev. 3:20

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Rom. 6:23

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 17 Host/Helper Notes—Session 5: Why and How Should I Pray?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Thank you for your continued ministry to your Alpha guests.

The upcoming Alpha Day Away is for everyone to attend—hosts, helpers, and guests. Our desire is that this day be a gift to the hosts and helpers as well as the guests. Please obtain from your guests their RSVP by simply writing the headcount on the Weekly Alpha Feedback Form. See Appendix A for date and time of the Alpha Day Away. Please encourage your guests to bring a Bible if they have one. Keep in mind, we have Bibles available for $25. Checks may be made payable to OLGC.

Reminders Ø There should be no side discussions in the small groups. It’s always a group discussion. Hosts and helpers, if you find this happening, please gently remind people that it’s a discussion for the whole group to be participating in and having two or three people in their own discussion is very distracting to the other guests. Ø If you have members in your group that knew each other well before Alpha, ask them to make an effort to sit separately for the good of the group dynamic. There is nothing more intimidating to other guests than to feel out of the loop. Ø If you haven’t done so already, lead the group in a simple prayer of thanksgiving before you start your meal. This will become a regular part of our sessions going forward. In future sessions, ask your helper to lead with a short prayer as well. Please make the prayer simple, nothing complicated. Perhaps a short sentence thanking God for today and what you are about to eat is best at this time. Ø If you have dominant personalities in your group, please feel comfortable to take them aside during the meal and encourage them to let others share their experiences first during the small group discussion. Ø If everyone in your group is ready, you may begin to introduce prayer at the end of this session. Hosts should begin with a simple, uncomplicated prayer and invite others to join in if they wish. There is beauty in simplicity. Helpers please feel free to join in also. Here are a few examples: “Dear Jesus, thank you for a lovely day” or “Dear Lord, thank you for every member in this group.” If you have someone who couldn't be with you at the session, lift them up in prayer by name. It’s helpful for group members to see that when they are absent, the group misses their presence. Ø You may want to bring a Bible to the sessions to follow along while Nicky presents during the talk. Don’t worry if you are unable to find every passage quoted by Nicky.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 18 Ø Please remember to review any questions from the last session or answer any new ones.

Ice Breaker These may be done during meal time, if you wish, or at the start of the discussion after the talk. • Can you think of some event or someone in your childhood that has helped you become who you are today? • How are you getting along in Alpha? Is Alpha answering your questions? How can we be of further help to you?

Discussion Questions 1. Nicky said, “Prayer is the most important activity of your life—it is the purpose for which you were made.” What was your reaction when you heard that?

2. Nicky told the story of how right after he prayed, he met up with an old friend from school while on his bus ride. At that time, he deemed this “just coincidence” yet much later he has learned differently. Has anyone ever experienced “coincidences” that have happened after prayer?

3. Do you feel like prayer is a burden or a waste of time?

4. Recall the story of Alex who barricaded himself in his room after getting caught stealing from his parents. Alex’s dad responded, “I need you to know that me and your mom love you. We try to provide for you, we give you everything that we have. Is that not enough? Please, please son, open the door, I really want to give you a hug right now.” This is the loving Father! Alex stated that he “never experienced God like that. At that moment, I never understood the Gospel more.” What do you think about the way in which Alex’s Dad handled the situation? Does this story help you understand how much love God has for you? Why?

5. In the talk, Nicky spoke about the rewards of prayer with one of them being peace. They went on to explain that the peace they are talking about does not mean that we will be free of troubles or problems. What was your reaction to that statement? In your prayer, would you expect the type of peace that removes the troubles or challenges you are facing? Please explain.

6. Nicky talked about how sometimes our prayers are not answered or are answered much later. He explains God’s timing is perfect. What do you think about that statement?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 19 7. How do you feel about praying at all times through the day?

8. Nicky said that in a way, the power of prayer depends upon our grasp of to whom we are praying: To the Father, through the Son, by one Spirit; the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:26). Did Nicky’s explanation help you to understand how the process of prayer works? If so, please explain.

9. Do you think the words “thank you/sorry/please” would be helpful when you want to pray?

10. Do you feel that you have been let down by God when your prayers don’t seem to be answered? How do you handle these feelings? Do you give up?

11. Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you. Does the wisdom of this statement make sense to you?

Scripture References In the same way, the Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groaning’s. Rom. 8:26

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 20 Host Helper Notes—Session 6: Why and How Should I Read the Bible?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

During the second week, we looked at the heart of —who Jesus is. The third week, we looked at why Jesus died. In the fourth week, we looked at how it is possible for us to come into a relationship with God. Last week, we explored prayer as a way to build a relationship with God. This week, we start to look at how we communicate with God and how God communicates with us as we listen to Nicky’s talk “How and Why We Should Read the Bible?” The Bible is a book that comes alive to believing Christians but lacks impact to those who don’t believe. This week we will also look at how to read the Bible.

Encourage your guests to purchase (or bring) a Bible, if they don’t already have one. You may recommend the Ignatius Bible, The New Jerusalem Bible, The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE), or one that you prefer to use. Which version is best to use depends upon whether you want it primarily for prayer, for study, or to take to church to follow the readings.

Reminders Ø Prayer Ministry Refresher Training to prepare hosts and helpers for the Alpha Day Away and Week 10 is coming up (refer to Appendix A). Please feel free to reach out to the Alpha Coordinator or your session leader should you have any questions about praying with others. Ø Don’t forget your simple prayer over your meal and when you close the session. Invite the guests to offer a simple prayer themselves if they feel comfortable. Remember: • Please don’t force anyone to offer a prayer; • Please refrain from picking the “low hanging fruit” (i.e., offer a simple prayer, leaving opportunities for additional simple prayer for others who may be inexperienced in prayer). For example, you may offer a prayer like this one. “Dear God, please protect us as we drive home”; • Lift up any guests who are absent or who are ill. Ø Bibles and Alpha Guides are available. They can be purchased for $25 and $5. Ø Remind everyone that the Alpha Day Away is an integral component of Alpha. If you are asked what the Alpha Day Away is about, feel free to let your guests know it’s an opportunity to learn more about the Holy and how He acts in our lives.

Ice Breaker • What was your favorite book as a child and why?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 21

Discussion Questions 1. Nicky stated that many people struggle with the Bible because they find it an outdated rule book that is irrelevant to the modern day. What is the relevancy of the Bible to your life?

2. Do you find the Bible difficult to read and why?

3. Has anyone ever tried reading the Bible on their own? If so, what part or parts did you read? What was your experience?

4. Do you feel God desires to speak or communicate personally with each of us? What is your opinion that the Bible is the primary way He does so?

5. Do you feel the Bible is more of a “love letter” or a “rule book”? How do you think reading the Bible can help you? In what ways?

6. Do you feel that the “rules” within the Bible restrict your freedom to enjoy life? Does the Bible take away freedom or give us freedom?

7. Do you think science and the Bible conflict with each other? Has science been an obstacle to you in believing the teachings of the Bible?

8. When you read the Bible, do you allow both your heart and mind to be involved?

9. Nicky explained that the purpose of the Bible is to help develop a relationship with Jesus and through it give life to those who come to Him (John 5:39-40). What do you think that means? How do you feel about His word influencing your life so powerfully?

10. How do you feel about reading the Bible with the intent of developing, repairing, or strengthening your relationship with God?

11. Nicky read a long list of what the Bible can do for us. What did you think while he read that list? (Generates life, produces change, heals hurts, builds character, transforms circumstances, imparts joy, overcomes adversity, defeats temptation, infuses hope, releases power, and cleanses the mind. . .)

12. Imagine being apart from the love of your life for an extended time with virtually no communication. One day a letter arrives in the mail from this person. How would you

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 22 feel? Now imagine that you don’t open that envelope, you just set it aside. The Bible is that letter from God. Won’t you open it and see what He has to say to you?

Scripture References “You search the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf. But you do not want to come to me to have life.” John 5:39-40

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 23 Host Helper Notes—Session 7: How Does God Guide Us?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

It's hard to believe we’re in Week 7! Thank you for being a blessing to your guests.

The talk at this session is important and comes before the Alpha Day Away. Since hearing from God and being guided by God is one of the ways the Holy Spirit moves in our lives, having a grasp of this talk can make the Alpha Day Away talks easier to understand. At this session, we want the guests to see that God really does have a beautiful plan for their lives. Please be attentive to the creative ways He has revealed His plan to your guests. Try to create ways for people who feel like they have “messed up” in life to see that our God is a God of second, third, and fourth chances. Please pray for full attendance at the Alpha Day Away.

Reminders Ø Begin to remind your guests about the Celebration Dinner. See Appendix A for details. You may register your guests with the link provided by the Alpha Coordinator. Ø Has everyone from your small group RSVP’d for the Alpha Day Away? Remind your guests that the Day Away consists of: • three talks on the Holy Spirit • small group discussion • Worship • Prayer Ministry Ø Alpha Day Away FAQ’s • Do I have to come? This day is a way for you to listen to three talks on the Holy Spirit who is the Consoler Jesus promised to send to us. If you attend, many of your questions about the Holy Spirit will be answered. • How important is the Alpha Day Away? The Alpha Day Away is important enough that many of our guests continue to talk about it long after the course is over. Many have indicated its impact upon their lives. Those who indicate they had a less than fruitful experience on Alpha did not attend the Alpha Day Away. • Will we be in our small groups? Yes. • Is childcare available? Be sure to remind your guests that childcare will not be available. Ø Remember to close out your session with prayer that lifts up the group, including anybody absent, and the upcoming Day Away. If your group has responded well to this in the past, you might ask one of the guests if they would offer the first prayer at the next session.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 24 Ice Breaker • What is the most daring thing you have ever done?

Discussion Questions 1. Where do you currently go for guidance or direction? How do you feel about the idea of being guided by God?

2. Has anyone had a sense in the last few weeks that God has been guiding them?

3. Was there a particular event or experience that was the catalyst that started you on your faith journey?

4. How do you feel about the statement that your life has a purpose, that God has a specific unique destiny for you?

5. God told us all that He would “instruct and teach us in the way to go” as well as “counsel and watch over you”? (Ps. 32:8) What do you think about that?

6. Nicky spoke of how God guides us and mentioned five ways he finds that God uses to speak to us. Does anyone remember any of them and what did you think about the list? Here are the five answers: • Commanding Scripture (The Bible)—Reading • Compelling Spirit (Being led by the Spirit)—Listening • The Counsel of Saints—Talking • Common Sense—Thinking • Circumstantial signs—Watching

7. Under “Commanding Scripture,” Nicky states that within the Bible, God tells us our primary calling is to be in relationship with Him. This gives ultimate meaning and purpose to our life. What do you think about that statement?

8. How do you feel about the statement that God can take all the “bad stuff” and “mistakes” and use them for good?

9. God sometimes guides us with visions, pictures, and prophecies. This guidance can come through you or others. Thinking back, how have you experienced this?

10. St John said: “Test the Spirits to see if they are from God” (1 John 4:1). Nicky suggested ways to be reasonably sure the thoughts you receive are from God. What are the ways?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 25

Answers are: • Is it in alignment with the Bible? (God doesn’t contradict himself) • Does it promote Love? (God is Love: 1 John 4:16) • Is it strengthening, encouraging, and comforting? (1 Cor. 14:3) • Do we sense God’s peace? (“Let the Peace of Christ rule your heart” Col. 3:15) What did you think about the list?

11. Sir Nicholas Winston was responsible for saving 664 Jewish children from certain death during World War II. Yet, it wasn’t until much later that he realized the impact of his actions. What went through your mind when you heard this story?

Scripture References I will instruct you and show you the way you should walk, give you counsel with my eye upon you. Ps. 32:8

Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

On the other hand, one who prophesies does speak to human beings, for their building up, encouragement, and solace. 1 Cor. 14:3

We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the Day of Judgment because as he is, so are we in this world. 1 John 4:16-17

And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Col 3:15

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 26 Host Helper Notes—Alpha Day Away

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Thank you for so faithfully witnessing to the person of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Being present for your guests, supporting them, and praying for them is helping lead them to an even greater relationship with the Lord.

There are three talks that will be shown at the Alpha Day Away: 1. Who is the Holy Spirit? 2. What does the Holy Spirit do? 3. How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?

They are shown in succession as each one builds on the other. As a result, the rest of the day consists of small group discussion, prayer, and fellowship.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 27 Host Helper Notes—Session 8: How Can I Resist Evil?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

We want to thank you for your presence at Alpha. The Holy Spirit touches the hearts of so many of our guests. God bless you and thank you so much for all that you are doing. What a grace to be working in the vineyard of Our Lord alongside you.

Reminders Ø Please continue to pray with your guests before meals and at the end of your session. Ø Your guests may still be reflecting upon the experiences they had at the Alpha Day Away. Please feel free to unpack this in your small group discussion and seek feedback. Ø The Celebration Dinner is just around the corner. Hosts, please make sure you register your guests. Ø Let us know who in your small group might have a testimony to share at the Celebration Dinner, as well as those who would make a potential small group host or helper on a future course. If someone in your group is interested in hosting or helping with Alpha, you may encourage them to register for training. Ø Encourage your small group to get involved in a variety of ministries after Alpha. These will be presented at the Celebration Dinner.

Ice Breaker There will be no icebreaker for this session, rather ask for feedback from the Alpha Day Away.

Discussion Questions 1. Nicky explained that throughout the ages, Christians have always believed in spiritual forces of evil. After listening the talk, have your views changed regarding the existence and influence of evil in us and the world? Please explain.

2. When he became a Christian, Nicky said he struggled believing there was a devil. He learned later about what he called “the triple alliance “which is the world, the flesh, and the devil.” Did Nicky’s explanation help you understand their influence on you? Can you give examples of these from your own experiences? Reference: The world, the enemy, or evil around us. (All that has turned away from God). The Flesh: the enemy or evil that comes from the desires within us. (Not the body) The Devil: the enemy or evil that is above. (The evil side of the Spiritual world.)

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 28 3. While on their search for spirituality, some people experiment with evil influences such as tarot cards, Ouija boards, and horoscopes. Were you aware of their evil influence on people? In your search for spirituality, were you ever led down any of these paths?

4. The devil, “the thief who comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10), is cunning and uses clever tactics in order to accomplish his goal. He wants us to doubt our beliefs and believe our doubts. How do you feel about the statement that: “It is never obvious at the start of where he is trying to take you”?

5. Temptation is a path to sin. Nicky reminds us that temptation is not a sin and that we have a choice. It is the devil who tries to ensnare us. Does anyone have techniques they use to resist sin or fight off temptation that they would like to share?

6. Does anyone remember the four tactics the devil uses to lead you on a path of destruction? (Answers) • Doubt (lies of who we are and who God is.) • Temptation (a path to sin but not sin itself. Scripture calls the devil the tempter. By temptation, the devil tries to make you believe you have already failed.) • Deception (tries to deceive you by saying God doesn’t love you and doesn’t want what’s best for you.) • Accusations (accuses you and then condemns you.) Looking back, can you see how the devil was trying to lead you down the wrong path?

7. The ultimate victory has already been won by Jesus though we are still in a battle. St Paul tells us to “Put on the armor of God” to fight this battle (Eph. 6:10). What do you think about the list of the pieces of armor and which do you relate to? ü Belt of truth around your waist. (Stay close to Jesus—keep our focus on Him.) ü Breastplate of righteousness. (Keep in right relationship with God and others. Repent quickly and strive to eliminate sin.) ü Feet fitted with the readiness for the Gospel of peace. (Serve, don’t just sit around.) ü Hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. (Remember the devil’s tactics and don’t give up on your faith.) ü Helmet of salvation. (Temptations start in the mind, win this battle. A thought becomes an action, an action, a habit, a habit becomes a destiny.) ü Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Read/know the Bible.) ü Pray in the Spirit on all occasions. (Keep close to God through prayer.) ü Stand firm together in the faith. (No armor for the back—much stronger when together.)

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 29 8. The Bible teaches: “Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good” (Rom. 12:21). As you observe the bad things in this world, do you feel that you can personally make a difference? Can anyone give an example of a particular instance when you tried to overcome evil with good?

9. With regards to Gram Seed’s conversion, what did you think about his dramatic conversion? Why do you think his conversion was so strong? Was there a key part of his story that stood out for you?

10. Prior to his conversion, Gram said that he didn’t have hope. He said that he was always trying to fill the hole that was inside of him, yet that never worked. What do you think about the description of “the hole” inside?

11. How can a man whose whole life has been filled with so much bad stuff or evil change so radically? How can a man’s thoughts and actions change so drastically after he has lost all hope? It is LOVE! LOVE in the person of Jesus! If Jesus can do that for Gram, He can do it for you. You hear this with your mind, but do you truly believe it in your heart? Is it time to allow His supreme love to change you?

Scripture References: “A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all (the) flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. Eph. 6:10-18

Do not repay anyone evil for evil; be concerned for what is noble in the sight of all. If possible, on your part, live at peace with all. Beloved, do not look for revenge but leave room for the wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” Rather, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head.” Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good. Rom. 12:21

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 30 Host Helper Notes—Session 9: Why and How Should I Tell Others?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Thank you again for your dedication to bringing your guests into a new relationship with Jesus.

It can be difficult to talk to others about the deeper or personal matters of our lives. Certainly, our faith in Christ falls into this category. Some people feel that one’s faith is a private matter and should not be discussed with others. Keep in mind, your small group is the ideal place to discuss these matters. Over time, they will grow comfortable sharing their story with others.

Reminders Ø Continue to close your session with prayer, inviting each guest to pray for something or someone in their lives. During your pre-session meeting with your session leader, be sure to lift up those guests who still may be struggling or need encouragement to tell others about the Good News. Ø Encourage your guests to continue to grow in their faith by getting engaged in a number of ministries that will be shared at the Celebration Dinner. Ø Think about who in your small group may have a testimony to share at the Celebration Dinner and also who would make an effective small group host, helper, or session leader on a future course. Ø Don’t forget to register your guests who will be attending the Celebration Dinner on the registration site.

Ice Breaker • Have you ever eaten at a restaurant that was outstanding and you just had to tell all your friends about it?

Discussion Questions 1. Have you told any of your friends, family, or co-workers that you are taking the Alpha Course? If so, what was their reaction?

2. If you did not know anything about Christianity, how would you prefer the Gospel be presented?

3. Nicky stated that the word “go” was mentioned several times in the Bible (Matt. 28:16- 20, Matt. 5:13-16). What feelings come to mind when you hear this message?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 31 4. Nicky’s mother-in-law quickly spread the news of their child’s birth out of excitement. What do you believe is the reason so many people are reluctant to share the Good News about Jesus? What are some ways you would be comfortable doing this?

5. Nicky gave us the example of the boy throwing the starfish back into the ocean, thus showing us how the little things we do can make such a difference. Looking back, can you see where you made a difference in someone’s life by witnessing Jesus to them?

6. When considering the task of making a difference in the world, does it help to look at it from the perspective of doing it one person at a time? What are the things keeping you from trying to make a difference?

7. Nicky said don’t give up talking about Jesus. Whenever you tell others the Good News of Jesus, it has an effect because the Gospel is the power of God. How do you feel about that statement?

8. In proclaiming the Good News about Jesus, Nicky gives us examples of how to do this. • Jesus said, “Come and See.” (John 1:39-41) • Bring our friends to Jesus (Invite and facilitate a way of making it happen.) • Share your story (People can’t argue it; it holds the power of your experience!) • Express and explain the Good News like the taxi driver did.

Do these seem like methods you would feel comfortable doing?

9. In telling others about Jesus, you may run into strong opposition. This opposition will not be like disagreeing on the best ball team or political party. Have you experienced opposition to expressing your religious beliefs? How did you, or how would you react?

10. Do you have any friends or family members who are not Christians? Do you think they might like to know about Alpha? Would you consider inviting them to a course?

11. He (Jesus) said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned.” This is our call. It is not for us to convert the world, but it is for us to bring the message to the world with the hope that all will be converted. Consider this prayer: Lord, please show me the way I can most effectively share the Gospel!

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 32 Scripture References The Commissioning of the Disciples: The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Matt. 28:16-20

The Similes of Salt and Light: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father. Matt 5:13-16

He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). John 1:39-41

He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah.” Then he brought him to Jesus. . .” John 1:41-42

The Commissioning of the Eleven: [But] later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. Mark 16:14-16

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 33 Host Helper Notes—Session 10: Does God Heal Today?

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

It’s hard to believe we are entering Week 10 of Alpha with only one more session to follow. Thank you so very much for all the time and effort that you have contributed to the fruitfulness of Alpha. God has blessed us in so many ways and you have been an integral part.

Inside the host folder are two forms: ü The Alpha Questionnaire Form is to be completed by your guests at the end of the Alpha Course which you will distribute to them next week. ü The Helper Evaluation Form to be completed by the host.

Both forms can be submitted to either your session leader or the Alpha Coordinator at the end of the Alpha Course.

Inside the helper folder is one form: ü The Host Evaluation Form to be completed by the helper and submitted to your session leader or the Alpha Coordinator at the end of the Alpha Course.

The Greek word that means “I save” also means “I heal.” God is concerned not just about our spiritual salvation but our whole being. One day we shall have a new and perfect body. In this life, we will never reach perfection. When God heals someone miraculously today, we get a glimpse of the future when the final redemption of our bodies will take place (Rom. 8:23).

Please cover this session in prayer, allowing God to guide you. This time together is important and significant. From training, you may recall that God is only asking us to extend our hand. God does the healing; He gives the gifts He chooses to give. For that moment, we are His instruments. If you need to, please refer back to the notes you took at training to refresh your memory.

Reminders Ø If anyone has a personal testimony in your group for the Alpha Celebration Dinner, please let your session leader know. Ø Please let your guests know that we are in need of hosts and helpers for the next course if they would like to come back and lead a group. Ø There is no discussion after the talk. Ø Following the talk, you will be praying with your guests.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 34 Prayer Time • The objective is to make it easy for the guests to experience healing prayer in an environment of faith. • This time of prayer is an expression of love for one another. • It’s also a time to give and receive this expression of love. • The gift of healing comes in the context of us naturally praying for one another. It’s different from sacramental anointing. We pray and God responds. Jesus heals whomever, whenever, and however in His providential love.

Prayer in your small groups 1. Find a way to create a sacred space that is conducive to prayer. You may consider dimming the lights, lighting some candles, and playing soft music in the background. It is helpful to have tissue available.

2. Hosts and helpers will be praying for one another first. Just as prayer ministry was modeled and practiced during training, you will be modeling what this looks like for your guests.

3. Together the host and helper go to each guest and ask permission to lay hands on their shoulders or head and then ask what it is they would like prayer for. Pray for everyone who would like prayer. Be sensitive to the words of knowledge that the Lord might be giving you and also pray that this guest might be filled with the Holy Spirit. Please remember that a guest does not have to receive prayer if they don’t feel comfortable.

4. Be open and attentive to the presence of the Spirit and His gifts. Encourage the guests to step out in faith and in love and to be confident in the power of prayer.

5. After all guests have been prayed with, close with a general prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has done. Depart quietly and reverently so as not to disturb other groups that may still be praying.

*The Alpha Coordinator will be available at this session (excluding home groups) to help facilitate this prayer.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 35 Host Helper Notes—Session 11: How Can I Make the Most of the Rest of My Life? (OLGC Alpha groups only)

Dear Alpha Hosts and Helpers,

Unbelievable! Today is Week 11 and the final session of Alpha. Words can’t express how grateful our pastoral staff is for your care of the brothers and sisters that you have journeyed with. Not only have your guests been blessed to have you as hosts and helpers, but in turn you have been blessed by the guests at your tables. New friendships and relationships have been made. You may want to set a date for a group reunion or to suggest getting together for coffee or a meal in the months that follow.

Reminders There are a few questions below for discussion after the talk, but please leave enough time in your group for the following: Ø Discuss the prayer time from this last week. What were your guests’ experiences? Please feel free to share this feedback on your Weekly Alpha Feedback Form. Ø Please distribute the Alpha Questionnaire to your guests and encourage them to complete them and return to the session leader. If your guests need more time, they may mail them to the Parish office at this address: OLGC, 1062 Church, Plymouth, MI 48170, attn. Mary Guilfoyle. Ø Please complete the Host and Helper Evaluation Forms online at https://olgcparish.wufoo.com/forms/alpha-host-end-of-course-evaluation/ and https://olgcparish.wufoo.com/forms/alpha-helper-end-of-course-evaluation/. If you do not have access to a computer, please use the form found in your training folder and return to the Parish office at this address: OLGC, 1062 Church, Plymouth, MI 48170, attn. Mary Guilfoyle. Ø Please make sure you have RSVP’d for the Celebration Dinner for your guests. Ø Please prayerfully consider talking with your guests about becoming a helper on the next course. Ø When filling out the evaluation forms, please encourage everyone to be honest. The purpose of the questionnaire is to improve the experience for everyone for future courses.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 36 Discussion Questions: 1. D.H. Lawrence is quoted at the beginning of the talk stating, “If only we could have two lives: the first one in which to make our mistakes . . . and the second in which to profit from those mistakes.” Does anyone feel that the mistakes they have made in the past have created a barrier that keeps them from moving closer to God? Do you realize that God desires to forgive all your mistakes?

2. In Rom. 12:1-2, St. Paul tells us how we can make the most of the rest of our lives; “. . . I urge you. . . in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. . .Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” What you think about giving up the allurements of the world in order to follow Jesus? What do you feel prevents you from doing what St. Paul is telling you?

3. St Augustine said “. . .serving God is perfect freedom,” yet many people think if they “present themselves as living sacrifices” as stated in Rom. 12:1 that they will lose their freedom. How do you feel about that? What is perfect freedom to you? Would you say your freedom would be “more perfect” serving God or serving yourself? Please explain.

4. Nicky stated that God wants us to get rid of the rubbish in our lives while holding onto all that is good. Looking at our lives right now, would it be difficult to get rid of the rubbish? Why do you think that is the case?

5. What do you think about the statement that many people resist coming to Christ out of fear that they will have to leave their old life behind?

6. Were you aware the Bible instructs and guides us in ways of making the most of the rest of our lives? There were examples given of how we can choose to use our eyes, ears, tongues, hands, and our sexuality the way God intended. What did you think of the examples? Can you imagine the difference this would make in the world? Give examples. (Matt. 19:4-6)

7. What did you think about Nicky’s explanation of placing God first before our own ambitions? Did it make sense to you to put God first or do you see it differently? (Matt. 6:33)

8. Nicky said our lives will have challenges, but “Jesus didn’t come to make life easy, He came to make you great.” How do you feel about that statement? Do you want to be great?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 37

9. What do you think about bringing Christian values to the workplace? What do you think the reaction would be? Do you think you would be willing to try this? If not, what would keep you from doing so?

10. Nicky stated that your experiences at the retreat really don’t matter as much as where you are going to be in your relationship with God in ten years’ time. Your relationship with God is meant to last a lifetime. What did you think about that statement? Where do you see your relationship with God in ten years’ time?

11. There will come a day when our earthly life will be over. God is love and He longs to have you with Him for eternity! God is ready to heal our pasts, forgive our sins, and welcome us to share in His own life. Is it time to dive into a deeper relationship with Him?

Scripture References “I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourself to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good, pleasing and perfect.” Rom. 12:1-2

He said in reply, “Have you not read that from the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, no human being must separate.” Matt. 19:4-6

“But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given you besides.” Matt. 6:33

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 38 Host/Helper Notes—Session 11: What About the Church? (non-OLGC Alpha groups)

What about the Church? Today the church, as an institution, gets a lot of negative press. Some see the church as an organization that abuses people or has some political agenda. This is certainly a different picture than what Jesus drew for His disciples when He described a church that would “prevail against the gates of hell and become hope for the world.” Our goal in this session is to help people rethink their understanding of the church as an organization and begin to understand the value of Christian fellowship and to see how involvement could have a positive impact in their lives.

Ø Please complete the Host and Helper Evaluation Forms and return these to your session leader as well. Ø Please make sure you have RSVP’d for the Celebration Dinner for your guests. Ø Please prayerfully consider talking with your guests about becoming a helper on the next course. When filling out the evaluation forms, please encourage everyone to be honest. The purpose of the questionnaire is to improve the experience for everyone for future courses.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 39 Discussion Questions 1. 4. What advice would you give someone who wants to get involved in the Church, yet questions where they can help and if they really can make a difference?

5. What role does the Church and her teachings play in our faith life? Do you feel it is necessary?

6. Do you think a person can thrive as a Christian without attending church?

7. What is the most important thing that you will take away from the Alpha Course?

8. Are there questions that arose that have not been answered?

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 41 Appendix B: Helping Redirect Responses from guests—Other Examples.

Over the course of the Alpha Course, situations may arise at the table that require additional attention. Below are some suggestions based on past experience that have been helpful for hosts and helpers. Several have asked for phrases to use when redirecting a variety of temperaments. Any time you have a concern, please feel free to discuss the issue with your session leader or the Alpha Coordinator. You may also send an email to [email protected].

Possible responses for “difficult” table guests • Always affirm the person without pronouncements or judgments on the content of statements. • Simple redirection toward the whole group is typically easy and useful. • A host’s joyful and peaceful attitude is contagious and mitigates any negativism in the group.

Outright aggression toward others in the group should be very rare and is not acceptable. Aggression toward the Church, however, may not be that rare, but this can be handled easily by redirection.

Possible general responses to statements from the guests “Thank you for sharing that” / “That took a lot of courage to share that. . .” / “I never heard that before. . .”/“That was really powerful. . .”

General redirection “Thank you, (Name), that is a wonderful observation you made/experience you had/feeling you shared/thought you volunteered. What do the rest of you think about that?”

If a guest calls on others at the table (best said in private to that guest) “(Name), thank you for your interest in everyone’s opinion; that means a lot. However, on the Alpha Course, we refrain from calling on people for the very specific reasons we discussed on the first day. We don’t want people to feel like they are back in school. (Say this with a smile) We value everyone’s opinion and insights, but we have no rule that one has to share at all. These are deep and profound questions, and some people are more comfortable silently contemplating. That is acceptable.”

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 42 Someone is a proselytizer “(Name), I am so happy that you feel so close to Jesus/so strongly about your faith, etc. Not everyone has that friendship/strong faith, etc., and there may even be some here who doubt Jesus exists. Let’s remember that we are not here to argue, but to share our thoughts without demanding that others feel or think as we do.”

Someone gets angry “I am sorry you feel angry, (name). What can we do to help you?”

Someone gets sad “I am sorry you are sad/hurt/embarrassed, etc. I am very sorry if I made you feel this way. Please accept my apology. If you want to share what was said or done to make you feel this way, please let me know. If not, know that my intentions were not to make you feel this way. Please let me know if it happens again so we can address the situation immediately. I (we) want you to feel safe here.”

When the discussion goes off topic 1. Keying in on an emotion, word, or topic of the person or people who are off subject, gently guide them back using the list of questions for the week. “That leads me to our next question. . .” 2. When the guests lead their answers to their children, grandchildren, or other family members, steer them back gently. It is fine to politely remind them that the discussion is about their faith journey.

When the guests ask your opinion as the host in the early sessions Ask the rest of the group what their thoughts are. Tell them “let’s see if we can figure it out together,” then gently steer them to the answer if possible by asking other questions. If the question will be covered later, tell them you believe that answer will come in a later session. If necessary, answer briefly and simply, enough to keep the conversation moving.

When a guest wants everything to be done “Catholic” Depending upon the topic, look ahead in the manual because many of the topics will be covered as the course progresses. (Prayer, the Bible, the Holy Spirit)

Explain that the Alpha Course is not about denominations, but about Jesus Christ. Courses that delve into details of Catholicism are offered as follow-up after Alpha.

Explain that the Alpha Course is being offered with the blessing of our pastor.

Talk to the person privately about the aims, goals, and process of Alpha. If this does not work, bring this up with your session leader for further instruction.

Guests want more explanation or are concerned about the Alpha Day Away

Encourage the guests to ask any questions they may have about the Alpha Day Away. The more information the guests have, the more likely it is they will feel at ease. Inform them of the elements of the Alpha Day Away—three talks on the topic of the Holy Spirit, small group discussion, breakfast, lunch, and an opportunity to receive prayer from the Alpha prayer teams.

If your group wants to know more, explain what they might experience. Let them know that it is all up to God. It doesn’t mean everyone will have the same experience. Explain that if they want to get close to Him, encourage them to be open and trusting.

Allow the guests to see and feel your genuine love for God and your excitement about this opportunity for them. This goes a long way to encourage them and give them confidence.

Other Tips from Alpha USA: Potential Small Group Scenarios on Alpha

Overcoming these challenging small group situations

1. The dominant member • Try not to make eye contact with the person. • Sit next to them rather than opposite. • Politely interrupt the person with statements such as: “What do the rest of you think?” “Let’s hear from some other people, too.” • Look directly at and gesture toward the other guests. • Talk to them privately about giving others a chance to share. • Be affirming when talking with them.

2. The eager Christian who “shares” too much • Question their answers by saying: “That’s a great answer for a Christian, but what would we say to someone who didn’t believe the Bible?” • Clarify texts and language used. • Express the fears/reactions other group members may be experiencing. • Talk to them privately after the session (or by phone) and affirm their knowledge. • Explain the Alpha philosophy and ask them to help draw people out.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 44 3. The quiet member • Talk to them at meal times. Ask “What do you hope to get out of the course?” “What sorts of questions do you have?” “Are we meeting your expectations?” • Make use of a comment or question they told you at supper and ask them for permission to repeat it in the group discussion. • Affirm them and their contributions. • Show love and genuine interest in the person. • Remember that sometimes quiet people are so used to being quiet that they just accept it. If host asks their opinion, it may show that the group values their input. • Accept people where they are at.

4. The quiet group • Be proactive; • Get them to write questions down. (Take home a question sheet) • Have an icebreaker every week. • Don’t be afraid of silence. • Don’t fill silence with your voice then they’ll always stay quiet! • Ask if your question makes sense (Rephrase if necessary) • Avoid right/wrong questions or “threatening” questions. • Ask questions to which you don’t know the answer. • Ask questions that allow or encourage “negative” responses: • “What do you find the hardest about praying?” • “What is the thing you fear most about sharing your faith?”

5. The chaotic group • Remind the group it is best to have only one conversation going at a time. • Address topics that are raised, but don’t stay off the topic too long. • Suggest some reading and come back to the subject over the next meal. • Be aware of topics coming up later in the course. • Continue having fun, don’t clamp down on the group too much. • Aim to ensure a degree of helpful discussion and information.

6. The person who concentrates on personal problems • Be interested, sympathize and listen to them, but after a while: § Steer the conversation back to the topic or toward others. § Offer to meet, talk, or pray with them during the week § Direct them to counseling or an appropriate small group. § Don’t sit opposite them.

Alpha Host/Helper Manual (AWNG) Our Lady of Good Counsel 12.04.2018 45 7. The person who becomes the group “project” • Deflect attention from the person to their question/issue. Rephrase if necessary. • Find ways to affirm his/her contributions: don’t let them always get “corrected” or “straightened out.” • Direct questions to other people. • Take the more enthusiastic Christians in the group aside and explain the situation and the Alpha philosophy of no pressure.
