Diocesan encounters ••• Our church: universal, alive and hope-filled Our adventure to the Papal Mass in Philadelphia re minded us on a whole new scale of how universal, alive and hope-filled the Catholic Church is! The enthusiastic group of 28 from St. Stephens (including twelve high school students) often mentioned the abun dance of JOY that we experienced as a highlight and de lighted that it was often found in unexpected settings. Whether we were profoundly participating in Mass with the Pope and hundreds of thousands all over the city while standing in the middle of a city street miles from the altar, or encountering incredibly kind and thoughtful event sup port staff, or reflecting on the Pope's homilies with new friends in the crowd, joy was abundant. Even the hours of waiting with a crazy hope that we'd be fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the Pope in person, were a gift. PHOTO BY GIDGET KIMBLE Imagine our absolute elation, when the Pope passed right Her patience was rewarded as diocesan staff member Gidget Kimble -who claimed aspace at 6 a.m. for the chance to see Pope by us in the Pope mobile Francis arrive at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia for the 4 p.m. Mass - captured aprized photo. Favorite Francis moment I don't have his exact quote, but Phil Moots (a student of IHC in Water town) pointed out to our bus that Francis shut down the entire city of Philadelphia - and that's pretty amazing. What's more, in the midst of what was a logis tical nightmare, there was joy. While waiting on line to get into Madison Square Garden, seeing all the peo ple gathering, and everyone full of anticipation, I thought of the crowds gath ering to see and hear Jesus: Who IS this man, what is so SPECIAL?
