Kon Satoshi E Morimoto Kōji
Corso di Laurea Magistrale in Lingue, Economie e Istituzioni dell’Asia e dell’Africa Mediterranea ordinamento ex D.M. 270/2004 Tesi di Laurea Magistrale Oltre i limiti della realtà: Kon Satoshi e Morimoto Kōji Relatore Ch. Prof. Maria Roberta Novielli Correlatore Ch. Prof. Davide Giurlando Laureando Maura Valentini Matricola 841221 Anno Accademico 2016 / 2017 要旨 数年前、私は『妄想代理人』というアニメを見たことがある。 INDICE INTRODUZIONE .............................................................................................. 3 CAPITOLO 1. Nihilism and Existentialist Rhetoric in Neon Genesis Evangelion

Y. TSANG King’s College London, Department of Comparative Literature, Ph.D. Student Generally categorized as low art, Japanese manga and anime draw insufficient overseas critical attention, regardless of their enormous cultural influence in East Asia. Their popularity not simply proved the success of cultural industrialization in Japan, but also marks a series of local phenomena, reflecting social dynamicity and complexity, that deserve interdisciplinary analysis. During the lost decade in the 1990s, which many scholars studied with economic accent (Katz 1998, Grimes 2001, Lincoln 2001, Amyx 2004, Beason and Patterson 2004, Rosenbluth and Thies 2010), manga and anime industry in Japan entered its golden age. The publication and broadcast of some remarkable works, such as Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Crayon Shin-chan and Slam Dunk, not only helped generate huge income (nearly 600 billion yen earned in the manga market in 1995) that alleviated economic depression, but also distracted popular focus from the urge of demythologising national growth. -
Religious Symbolism in Rebuild of Evangelion
Media Department BTEC HND in Creative Media Production April, 2013 Religious symbolism in Rebuild of Evangelion Aaron Meehan 1 This dissertation explores how religious symbols can be interpreted differently depending on the cultural context. I will look at the religious symbolism in the Japanese anime series, Rebuild of Evangelion using a semiotic analysis. I have also looked at how the symbols created in this show compare to the commonly accepted meaning of the symbols. In the dissertation I will be discussing the work of two semiotic theorists, Roland Barthes and Ferdinand de Saussure. I will be discussing Barthes’ theory on how signs are polysemic (multiple meanings) and Saussure’s theory on how we see certain symbols in television, and how they are created. Since I am looking at the religious symbols in Rebuild of Evangelion, I will look at Christianity in Japan. This is due to the fact that religious symbolism in the show is primarily Christian. I will also briefly look at the reason why the creators of Rebuild of Evangelion decided to put religious symbolism in their series. I would like to thank and acknowledge the general assistance from librarians and the advice from my lecturer, Laura Roche, on how to layout the dissertation. 2 Contents Introduction ................................................................................................................................ 3 Literature review ........................................................................................................................ 5 Methodology -
The Dissemination and Localization of Anime in China: Case Study on the Chinese Mobile Video Game Onmyoji
The dissemination and localization of anime in China: Case study on the Chinese mobile video game Onmyoji Wuqian Qian The Department of Asian, Middle Eastern and Turkish Studies Master Program in Asian Studies, 120 hp Autumn term 2016 Supervisor: Jaqueline Berndt English title: Professor Abstract In the 2017 Chinese Gaming Industry Report, a new type of video games called 二次 元 game is noted as a growing force in the game industry. Onmyoji is one of those games produced by Netease and highly popular with over 200 million registered players in China alone. 二次元 games are characterized by Japanese-language dubbing and anime style in character design. However, Onmyoji uses also Japanese folklore, which raises two questions: one is why Netease chose to make such a 二次元 game, the other why a Chinese game using Japanese folklore is so popular among Chinese players. The attractiveness of an exotic culture may help to explain the latter, but it does not work for the first. Thus, this thesis implements a media studies perspective in order to substantiate its hypothesis that it is the dissemination of anime in China that has made Onmyoji possible and successful. Unlike critics who regard anime as an imported product from Japan which is different from domestic Chinese animation and impairs its development, this study pays attention to the interrelation between media platforms and viewer (or user) demographics, and it explores the positive influence of Japanese anime on the Chinese creative industry, implying the feasibility of anime or 二次元 products to be created in other countries than Japan. -
Anime: the Cultural Signification of the Otaku Anime
ANIME: THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICATION OF THE OTAKU ANIME: THE CULTURAL SIGNIFICATION OF THE OTAKU By Jeremy Sullivan, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements For the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Jeremy Sullivan, September 2005 MASTER OF ARTS (2005) McMASTER UNIVERSITY (English) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Anime: The Cultural Signification of the Otaku AUTHOR: Jeremy Sullivan, B.A. (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Dr. Lorraine York NUMBER OF PAGES: v, 103 Abstract Technology has allowed nearly instantaneous communication around the globe and this study examines how cultural transmission occurs through the consumption of television and film. Anime, a term used to refer to a genre of animation that is of Japanese origin, has become immensely popular in North America and has come to simultaneously come to signify a commodifled Japanese youth culture. However, the spectrum of Japanese animation is restricted and controversial anime that includes offensive themes, violent, sexual or illicit material are not televised, or publicized except when associated with negative behaviour. The Otaku are labeled as a socially deviant subculture that is individualistic and amoral. Their struggle for autonomy is represented by their production, circulation and consumption of manga and anime, despite the insistence of the dominant Japanese and North American cultural discourses. This study will examine how publicly circulating definitions, media review, historical relations and censorhip have affected the portrayal of otaku subculture in Japan and internationally. in Acknowledgements A special thanks to my thesis supervisor Lorraine York. Without her patience and guidance this project would not have been possible. -

Without his inspired topic suggestion, this thesis would not exist. I am grateful for every fielded concern and encouraging comment. Appreciation is also due to Dr. Kimberly Engber and Dr. Wilson Baldridge for their thoughtful commentary, creative input, and interest in the project. I am grateful to my parents, who offered help every step of the way. My thanks also go to Merritt Stuever, both a sounding board and patient support. iv ABSTRACT Much research exists on the considerable influence of American and European culture on the newly opened borders of Japan in the 1920’s, yet there is very little recognition of French influences beyond the acknowledgement of Surrealism in literary and artistic circles. -
