From the bloody wars that ravage the planet to the “culture wars” of academia, from parliaments to the streets, from theological walls between religious denominations to concrete walls between countries, from divided families to divided selves, the contemporary world seems in a veritable state of hysteria about alterity. Embrace or exclude? Efface difference or respect it? Protect or crush? Celebrate or ignore? Repress or ex- press? Our world poses all these alternatives and more. We oscillate between wildly divergent responses to the confrontation of our collective and individual Selves with the Others that fill us with love, hate, de- sire, and revulsion. In a world that is painfully divided, divisions also found within our souls, we rush from one stance to another, seeking to overcome, or at least manage, that pain – propelled by a deep-rooted resistance, even if often unconscious, to this alienation from the Other, this transformation of the Other into an alien, and by our desire for harmony with the Other, indeed for the Other’s embrace. This book is about the poetic mythology of Otherness in the Zoharic tradi- tion in kabbalah. “Kabbalah” is the common appellation for a vast and hetero- geneous array of texts and practices that emerged on the historical stage in the 12th and 13th century in Provence, Catalonia, and Castile, and spread all over the Jewish world and beyond it. “The Zohar” – or “the Zoharic literature”3 – the crowning glory of the formative period of kabbalah, is an array of homiletical, mythological, and mystical texts composed primarily by mid- to late 13th cen- tury Spanish writers, largely in Aramaic. These unsigned texts articulate their teachings through the imagined discussions of a group of 2nd century sages, the “Companions,” the Ḥevraya, during their peregrinations across an imagi- nary Holy Land. These texts, gradually collected over the generations, were published in Italy in the mid-16th century as the Sefer Ha-Zohar, the “Book of I note that the translations from the Zoharic literature are my own, except where otherwise noted, but see the Prefatory Note and Bibliography for the variety of previous translations which I have often consulted in making these translations. 3 See below for a discussion of the current scholarly debate about the composition and unity of “the Zohar.”.

Shabbetai Tzvi was said to be born on the 9th of Av in 1626, to a wealthy family of merchants in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey). He received a thorough Talmudic education and, still in his teens, was ordained as a hakham — a member of the rabbinic elite. However, Shabbetai Tzvi was interested less in Talmud than in Jewish mysticism. Starting in his late teens he studied kabbalah, attracting a group of followers whom he initiated into the secrets of the mystical tradition. Shabbetai Tzvi battled with what might now be diagnosed as severe bipolar disorder. He understood his condition in religious terms, experiencing his manic phases as moments of “illumination” and his times of depression as periods of “fall,” when God’s face was hidden from him.

Many returned to mainstream Judaism; others remained secret Sabbateans. However, a small group in Salonika followed their master into apostasy, converting to Islam in imitation of Sabbatai Zevi. This group, known as the Donme, was very homogenous at the beginning; its members were few in number, knew each other well, and tended to be related to one another. However, shortly after the death of Sabbatai Zevi they split into three factions (a fourth, the Frankists, arose later in Europe), who differed greatly from each other in organization, ritual, and theology. This thesis examines two main distinctions between the groups that led to their divergent outcomes. First, I examine the differences in modes of authority between the groups. In order to do this, I conceptualize two models of authority, the mundane and the charismatic (loosely based on Bruce Lincoln and Max Weber’s theories of authority). The four groups are compared and contrasted based on the degree to which they rely on each of the modes of authority. I also examine the ways in which each group linked itself to Sabbatai Zevi and legitimated itself as the rightful successors to his legacy. In this case this thesis distinguishes among legitimacies conveyed by the body of the messiah, the soul of the messiah, and the ideas and teachings of the messiah.

    Chapter 2 Me’ora’ot Tsvi and the Construction of Sabbatianism in the Nineteenth Century Jonatan Meir I In 1814, a book called The Tale of Dreams: The End of Wonders (Sipur halomot kets ha-pla’ot, also called Me’ora’ot tsvi) was published in the town of Kopys. A year later, it was printed there again, this time with corrections, additions and far-reaching changes.1 The publisher, R. Israel Jaffe, was affiliated with Habad Hasidism, and towards the end of 1814 he printed the first edition of Shivhei ha-Besht (In Praise of the Baʻal Shem Tov). At first glance, Me’ora’ot tsvi seems unexceptional. In nineteenth-century Jewish Eastern Europe, many popular pamphlets of this sort spread wondrous tales, versions of historical events and hagiographic accounts of various holy men. But this book had a sensational topic: the Sabbatian movement. According to its title page, it con- tained the story of Sabbatai Tsvi, based on the writings of Moshe Hagiz, Jacob Sasportas, and Tsvi Hirsch Ashkenazi, the Hakham Tsvi. The title page of the first edition reads: The Tale of Dreams: The End of Wonders which was taken directly from the books of the sages of the earlier generations. The article is focusing on a relatively small number of Jewish descendants in the mid-17th century whose community could survive and their members managed to reach high societal and administrative positions by the late 19th century. The Dönmehs later played a key role in reform movements which led to a political transition in the 1920s. This paper analyses the relation of the Dönmeh’s identities and the community’s preferences regarding the form of government. It is a very welcome, fruitful addition to ongoing discussion of the enigmatic figure of Sabbatai Zevi and of early modern messianism. This volume contains a brief, but engaging and informative introduction that rehearses some of the main themes in the biography and scholarly discussion of Zevi. Readers are introduced to the outline of Zevi's life and intellectual environment, but also to the intense discussions of the "fallen messiah" after his conversion to Islam and death. While this book will not serve as a stand-alone introduction to the infamous messianic figure, David Halperin provides nicely translated, well-annotated, intriguing sources about Sabbatai Zevi by both followers and opponents. This very approachable book will be of great value to students and teachers. It was only logical that it alarmed the rabbinic authorities, who considered the children of these sectarians as bastards and therefore no longer admissible to the fold. It is evident that quite a few of the most influen- tial moral preachers and authors were in fact secret Shabbateans, on the mod- erate and Hasidic wings. While all of these developments mainly took place in a twilight or underground atmosphere and received little general attention, from time to time the struggle would resurface. This storm is fundamental in order to reach an understanding of another dispute which took place in Italy and concerns the question of Moses Hayyim Luzzatto (Padua 1707 – Acre 1746). ˙ As a typical young Jew, born in the Italian peninsula during that period, Luzzatto studied both the Halakhah and secular literature, above all the poetry and the rhetoric; but this archetypal curriculum studiorum was further enriched by his application to the study of the Kabbalah. In 1727 he declared that he had seen a maggid who revealed divine secrets to him daily.
