Some were not completely happy with an example I gave of an error in the Chavel edition of Ramban in a previous post at the Seforim blog. So let me offer another, also from one of Ramban’s talmudic works (since that was the genre I used last time). In Kitvei Ramban, 1:413, Chavel prints the introduction to Milhamot ha-Shem. The Ramban writes: וקנאתי לרבנו הגדול רבי יצחק אלפאסי זכרונו לברכה קנאה גדולה, מפני שראיתי לחולקים על דבריו שלא השאירו לו כפי רב מחלוקותיהם ענין נכון בכל מה שדבר, ולא דבר הגון בכל מה שפרש, ולא פסק ראוי בכל מה שפסק, לא נשאר עם דבריהם בהלכות זולתי הדברים הפשוטים למתחיל פרק אין עומדין In his note, Chavel explains the last words as follows: רק בסוף הפרק הזה נמצאה השגה אחת מבעל המאור are the למתחיל פרק אין עומדין Yet what Ramban means by children who begin their talmudic study with Tractate Berakhot. -

It presents the social and religious context in which Luzzatto was variously celebrated as the leader of a kabbalistic-messianic confraternity in Padua, condemned as a deviant threat by rabbis in Venice and central and eastern Europe, and accepted by the Portuguese Jewish community after relocating to Amsterdam. -

1 SHABBETAI TZVI The Biggest Hoax in Jewish History While faith in the coming of the messiah is a linchpin of Judaism, Jews have traditionally taken a patient, quiet approach to their messianic beliefs. Since the devastation wreaked by false messiah Bar Kochba and his rebellion against the Romans, and the centuries of persecution caused by another messianic movement — Christianity — Jews have been understandably suspicious about anyone’s claim to be God’s anointed. The rabbis of the Talmud went so far as to introduce specific prohibitions against messianic agitation, instituting the “three oaths” which prohibited any attempt to “force the end” by bringing the messiah before his allotted time (Babylonian Talmud. Yet in the mid-17th century, belief in the false messiah Shabbetai Tzvi spread like wildfire throughout the Jewish world, sweeping up entire communities and creating a crisis of faith unprecedented in Jewish history. Shabbetai Tzvi was said to be born on the 9th of Av in 1626, to a wealthy family of merchants in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey). He received a thorough Talmudic education and, still in his teens, was ordained as a hakham — a member of the rabbinic elite. However, Shabbetai Tzvi was interested less in Talmud than in Jewish mysticism. Starting in his late teens he studied kabbalah, attracting a group of followers whom he initiated into the secrets of the mystical tradition. Shabbetai Tzvi battled with what might now be diagnosed as severe bipolar disorder. He understood his condition in religious terms, experiencing his manic phases as moments of “illumination” and his times of depression as periods of “fall,” when God’s face was hidden from him. -

eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai. -

Sample ISRAEL Tikkun Olam Activities Leslie Gubitz, NFTY-OV SAVP 2006-2007 Judaism is the only religion in which Tzedakah is not a once-in-a-while action, but instead is encouraged to be practiced every day. Jews are guided to give Tzedakah often, commit to Social Action regularly, as well as promote Tikkun Olam among other friends and families. Often it is difficult to involve youth group members in Social Action activities if the participants do not instantly see the effects of their actions. However, Maimonides’ Eight Levels of Tzedakah stresses that although Tzedakah may affect the recipient on many different levels, ALL Tzedakah is important. It is strongly encouraged that you teach this value to your youth group so that they can understand that not every Social Action activity provides visible advances, and yet all forms of Tikkun Olam are acceptable, appreciated, and necessary. EVERY LITTLE BIT COUNTS! TZEDAKAH: An Explanation of Maimonides Eight Levels of Tzedakah as well how Tzedakah and Charity can utilized through modern day Judaism. This program might be used in whole or in part and could aid in introducing Tikkun Olam and Social Action to any sized youth group. (Appendix A) Once your youth group has had an introduction to Tikkun Olam and Social Action, be sure to give them more opportunities to commit to helping others. BY organizing events, lock-ins, programs, or drives your youth group will be able to aid the community or world through outreach activities. A specific interest that you should relay to your youth group is the need for support for Israel. -

The Theoretical Kabbalah
SES Kabbalah Course Segment 4 The Theoretical Kabbalah The most lasting product of the Provençal and Spanish schools of Kabbalah was compilation and publication of the classical Kabbalistic texts: the Sefer Yetzirah, the Sefer ha-Bahir, and the Sefer ha-Zohar. The Spanish Rabbi Moses de Léon (c.1250–1305) published the Zohar at roughly the same time when Abraham Abulafia was writing about the ecstatic Kabbalah. Controversy over the Zohar’s origins may never be resolved, but the work emerged as a major Jewish sacred text. Without doubt it became the most significant text in the development of the theoretical Kabbalah. The Zohar provided all of the concepts on which the theoretical Kabbalah is based. But its full potential was not exploited for another 300 years. That task fell to an elite group of scholars who assembled at Safed, Galilee, in the 16th century. Moses Cordovero, Isaac Luria, and others codified the zoharic teachings and built the elaborate system of theoretical Kabbalah we recognize today. In this segment we shall learn more about the Ain Sof and the sefiroth. We shall study the Kabbalistic story of creation, fall and redemption; we shall meet the Shekinah, the feminine aspect of God; and we shall explore the human soul and reflect on the role humanity can play in cosmic redemption. Specifically, this segment includes the following sections: • Cultural Context: From Southern Europe to Safed • The Divine Emanations • Creation, fall and redemption • The Shekinah • Humanity: Constitution and Behavior • Reflections, Resources, and Assignment. Cultural Context Exodus from Provence and Spain The Golden Age of southern European Kabbalism, discussed in Segment 2, came to an end as political changes undermined the environment in which generations of Jews had lived, worked, worshipped and studied.
