    2018 MEDIA GUIDE Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 ROUND 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 Rallye Deutschland August 16 - 19, 2018 HYUNDAI’S HELLO Welcome to Rallye Deutschland, Hyundai Motorsport’s home event, which takes place during a very exciting time for the WRC with both title battles finely balanced. Although last month’s Rally Finland didn’t produce the ultimate result for our team, Hayden finished just outside the podium places after a strong drive. Thierry and Nicolas continue to lead the Drivers’ championship with an advantage of 21 points, while the Hyundai Shell Mobis World Rally Team heads the Manufacturers’ championship by 26 points so there’s plenty of reason to be positive. I must also congratulate our HMDP crew of Jari and Antti for recording their first WRC2 podium of the year with second in that class. Rallye Deutschland is the first tarmac event on the calendar since Tour de Corse in April. Since then we’ve worked on improving the suspension, especially the dampers, and centre differential mapping with two aims in mind: to achieve more grip for the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC and find a better balance. This follows feedback from our drivers during Corsica where they reported being hampered by understeer. Our three drivers for Germany – Thierry, Dani and Andreas – have all sampled the changes during development testing and they also got the opportunity to finalise their set-ups during the recent pre-event test, which took place over five days so we could experience the vineyard roads and those within the Baumholder military range, which are very specific to this rally.

It is 15 years since a drivers’ title fight of similar magnitude and a compelling season-long battle involving three drivers was finally resolved on the last morning of the season in Australia. It was a similar story in the manufacturers’ championship. All four teams won rallies and three made the long journey Down Under still with an opportunity to claim the crown. Following a similarly enthralling and unpredictable 2017 cam- paign, when new-era World Rally Cars headlined a raft of major changes to the championship, it is clear our sport is in the midst of an unforgettable period in its history. Away from the close competition, the WRC has grown in stature. The year opened with a major launch at Birmingham’s Autosport International show and finished with a glamorous end of season gala in Sydney and with the cars showcased once more in front of Milan’s iconic cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Our pioneering WRC+ All Live channel revolutionised the way in which fans could enjoy the sport as it happened. Every special stage from each round was streamed live, featuring stunning onboard and helicopter footage. It was supplemented by expert analysis and reactions from across the service park – adding up to more than 325 hours of live coverage. Our traditional TV coverage thrived too. The WRC’s global audi- ence and the number of broadcast hours continue their positive trend of the last years.

While Turkey is no stranger to the WRC, the event’s new home in Marmaris means an untried route for all manufacturer drivers and teams. And with the battle for both titles at a crucial stage with four rallies remaining, we can expect a very open and action-packed event in what is an important market for Hyundai: car production – including the road-going i20 – at its Izmit plant is 205,000 units per year. I was pleased that we were able to secure a podium result at our home rally in Germany last month. It means Thierry and Nicolas were able to increase their lead of the Drivers’ championship to 23 points, while Hyundai’s advantage over Toyota in the Manufacturers’ championship is 13 points. It was an eventful final morning in Germany, which unfortunately included a retirement for Dani and Carlos, ending their own podium charge. It was a pity for them after a strong weekend. They had the confidence and the speed, and we know they’ll take the positives ahead of their home rally in Spain next month. Thierry and Nicolas were there to pick up the position following Dani’s retirement with Andreas and Anders also moving up to sixth place. For Turkey, we welcome Hayden and Seb back to the team and we look forward to counting on their past performances and experience on gravel to boost our championship hopes on this event.

This came courtesy of a very welcome win for Thierry and Nicolas on Tour de Corse, which was our first of the season. We did of course inherit the victory as a result of Elfyn Evans picking up a puncture on the final Power Stage, but taking first place is naturally a positive thing for the team. Were it not for that misfortune, Thierry and Nicolas would have claimed second in Corsica, which would’ve been an encouraging result and is thanks to their fantastic efforts in the Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC. But for a true win you have to be fastest and, on this occasion, we didn’t quite manage that. As a team, however, we have been pushing hard and this result will definitely act as a morale boost, even if we have to be clear with ourselves where we are performance-wise and where we need to be. We were helped in Corsica by Dani and Carlos’ strong showing to score important points in fourth place, and even though Sébastien and Daniel encountered problems on day one that left them on the back foot they were still able to use the rally to learn more about the Hyundai i20 Coupe and how to get the best from it.
