The English-born director of the "Batman" movies had longed for years to tackle the story of how a kind of victory was pulled from Britain's worst defeat of World War II. And given its string of five-star reviews it was worth the wait, with the Hollywood Reporter calling it "an impres- sionist masterpiece", The Guardian deeming it "his best film" while Variety-blown-away by its "vertebrae-rattling" pace-simply declared, "What an achievement it is!" Yet the film's setting could not be more som- bre. With the cream of the British army trapped by a lightning German advance into northern France in May 1940, the country's new leader Winston Churchill was told they would be lucky to get 30,000 men out alive. But in nine days more than 10 times that number of British, French and Canadian troops were evacuated in what became known as the "Miracle of Dunkirk". Many were plucked from the beaches by a flotilla of "little ships" crewed by civilians who answered the call to cross the Channel. Their courage came home to Nolan and his wife, producer Emma Thomas, when they crossed the same stretch of water in a small boat in what he described as "one of the most difficult and People watch the seventh season premiere of US TV show "Game of Thrones" at the Mayakovskaya metro station in Moscow early yesterday. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

On Stern: m.r.s. top. Beauty in the eye of the beholder? No, today, beauty is in the eye of the Internet. This, 2015, was the year that beauty went fully social, when A-listers valued their looks according to their “likes” and one Instagram post could connect with millions of followers. Case in point: the Ali MacGraw-esque look created for Kendall Jenner (THR beauty moment No. 9) by hairstylist Jen Atkin. Jenner, 20, landed an Estee Lauder con- tract based partly on her social-media popularity (40.9 million followers on Instagram, 13.3 million on Twitter) as brands slavishly chase the Snapchat generation. Other social-media slam- dunks? Lupita Nyong’o’s fluffy donut bun at the Cannes Film Festival by hairstylist Vernon Francois (No. 2) garnered its own hashtag (“They're calling it a #fronut,” the actress said on Instagram. “I like that”); THR cover star Taraji P. Henson’s diva dyna- mism on Fox’s Empire (No. 1) spawns thousands of YouTube tutorials on how to look like Cookie Lyon; and Cara Delevingne’s 22.2 million Instagram followers just might have something do with high-end brow products flying off the shelves.

  • Answer Key the Business of Film
THE BUSINESS OF FILM Answer key WORD BANK indies trade newspapers three Hollywood studio system job production companies Pixar film festivals 1) There are THREE basic ways to get a film made and into theaters. 2) TOY STORY 2 is an example of the first (and least-used) way to do this. From start to finish, it was created by PIXAR employees. The Disney Company distributed the film to movie theaters. 3) At the Pixar website, you can learn more about their company’s history, film development, employees, and current JOB openings. 4) During the Golden Age of Hollywood, the HOLLYWOOD STUDIO SYSTEM used to run something like this, with actors, writers, directors and others under contract with a particular studio and only working for that studio. 5) Today, movies like THE PRINCESS BRIDE are created in another way: The individual PRODUCTION COMPANIES hire a different crew for each project and bring their projects to a studio for distribution. 6) Movies like MAD HOT BALLROOM are called “INDIES,” a short term for “independent films.” 7) Indies use a third approach…Individuals create the film and enter the completed films into FILM FESTIVALS, where they hope distribution companies will see them, buy the films and get them into movie theaters. The film festivals held at Sundance, Toronto, Austin, and Cannes have their own websites where you can learn how to enter and how to attend. 8) Those in the film business rely on the two main TRADE NEWSPAPERS Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, which have online websites, where you can find the latest news, promotions, and box office statistics for the entertainment industry.
