This season runs across the first half of the year in Stratford-upon-Avon, with an incredible range of work by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. We kick off in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre with A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation. This ground-breaking production, directed by my Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman, sees our company of 18 professional actors work alongside amateur actors who play Shakespeare’s Mechanicals. Starting in Stratford, the show will tour the 12 regions and nations of the UK, working with local amateur companies in their home towns, before returning to Stratford for Midsummer, alongside a fantastic programme of summer events. Simon Godwin returns, following his infectiously enjoyable production of TO The Two Gentlemen of Verona with a vibrant, contemporary production of Hamlet. I’m delighted that Paapa Essiedu will take on the title role. Joining Hamlet in repertoire will be Cymbeline, as we continue our journey through all of Shakespeare’s plays. Melly Still returns to the company to direct Shakespeare’s rarely-performed romance. In the Swan Theatre, Maria Aberg brings her exhilarating style to Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus before we mark two other significant anniversaries. Cervantes died on the same date as Shakespeare, so it’s appropriate in 2016 that we stage a new version of his great genre-defining novel, Don Quixote. James Fenton’s new version will be directed by Angus Jackson following his acclaimed production of Oppenheimer earlier this year. Finally, we stage Jonson’s masterpiece, The Alchemist. 2016 is also the 400th anniversary of the publication of Jonson’s folio of his own collected works. Without this, it’s entirely possible that John Hemmings and Henry Condell would not have published a folio of their great friend Shakespeare’s works. Without that first folio, published in 1623, half of his plays would have been lost to us. Beyond our work on stage, we have a host of events and exhibitions, as well as programmes for students and teachers throughout the year. We will also complete two major capital projects, opening The Other Place and our new Swan Wing Exhibition. There will never be a better time to experience HE WAS NOT OF AN AGE, Shakespeare’s work in Stratford-upon-Avon. Later in the year, I will direct King Lear with Antony Sher in the title role. BUT FOR ALL TIME! That production will go on sale in the New Year together with another Shakespeare production that I’m not yet able to announce, but promises to be a truly fitting culmination of our celebrations.     IV: THE ALLAN WILKIE SHAKESPEAREAN COMPANY, 1920-1926 "Our True Intent is all for Your Delight." In September 1920, Allan Wilkie announced his plans to establish Australia's first permanent Shakespearean company, drawing a parallel to Frank Benson's Company in England. The inaugural production by the new Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Company was to be a "new arrangement" of Macbeth, and Wilkie gave it as his fixed intention to produce all thirty-seven of Shakespeare's plays, some of which had never previously been staged in Australia." Advance publicity emphasized the potentially historic nature of the occasion: When in future years this company will be counted one of the institutions of which Australia is proud, those who attend on the opening night will tell with satisfaction how they were present during the enthusiastic hours which saw the inception of the company [Argus, 9 September 1920]. Many cynics were quick to point out the unlikelihood of Wilkie's venture surviving for long, or even getting off the ground, in view of the history of Shakespeare production in Australia. His was by no means the first proposal to establish a permanent company, but lack of demand had ended all previous efforts. In order to arouse audience curiosity, Wilkie advertised, as mentioned above, a "new arrangement" of Macbeth. His presentation was to have two novel aspects, which were to form the basis of his production methods in the years to come. They were interdependent: first, a new method of scenic arrangement, and second, a new organisation of the play, made possible by simplified scenery.

    52 - SIR FRANK BENSON By Ann Pennington The proudest moment in the life of Frank Benson occurred when he was knighted by King George V during the tercentenary performance of Julius Caesar at Drury Lane in 1916, the first actor to be so honoured within the walls of a theatre. Previously he had been awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Stratford-upon-Avon for his services to Shakespearean theatre. Francis Robert Benson, known by his family as Frank and almost invariably by his fellow Thespians as F.R.B. was the fourth child and third son of William Benson, descended from Quaker stock, and Elizabeth Soulsby Benson (nee Smith), reputed to be one of the most beautiful women of her day. Their grave and memorial is in the New Alresford churchyard. Born in Tunbridge Wells on 4th November 1858, Frank Benson was quite a little boy when the family moved to Langtons, now Langton House, at the corner of East Street and Sun Lane in Alresford. Both house and grounds are much smaller now than when the Bensons, their six children and a battalion of servants lived there. The property included the farm with its paddocks, pastures, stables and grounds with long sloping lawns, flower walks and an enclosed kitchen garden. This was the home Frank Benson remembered in later life with almost passionate affection. Throughout his schooldays his main interests were physical fitness and the love of word and rhythm. In his two final years at Winchester he was Head of House (Wickham's) and had won the straight mile, appropriately on the Alresford road.

The festivities began with the traditional ASH Wednesday dinner sponsored by The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes at Annie Moore's, and continued with the Christopher Morley Walk led by Jim Cox and Dore Nash on Thursday morn- ing, followed by the usual lunch at McSorley's. The Baker Street Irregulars' Distinguished Speaker at the Midtown Executive Club on Thursday evening was Alan Bradley, co-author of MS. HOLMES OF BAKER STREET (2004), and author of the award-winning "Flavia de Luce" series; the title of his talk was "Ha! The Stars Are Out and the Wind Has Fallen" (his paper will be published in the next issue of The Baker Street Journal). The William Gillette Luncheon at Moran's Restaurant was well attended, as always, and the Friends of Bogie's at Baker Street (Paul Singleton and An- drew Joffe) entertained the audience with an updated version of "The Sher- lock Holmes Cable Network" (2000). The luncheon also was the occasion for Al Gregory's presentation of the annual Jan Whimsey Award (named in memory of his wife Jan Stauber), which honors the most whimsical piece in The Ser- pentine Muse last year: the winner (Jenn Eaker) received a certificate and a check for the Canonical sum of $221.17. And Otto Penzler's traditional open house at the Mysterious Bookshop provided the usual opportunities to browse and buy.
