worked hard to change lives. “Change” is the key word at EAF this year, as longtime EAF President R. Scot Evans will step Fdown and pass the reins to Stephanie Riggio Bulger. Sidelines had a chance to catch up with the new EAF president and speak to her about the position and her aspirations for the catastrophic illnesses or injuries.

How did you become involved with EAF?

My involvement with the EAF began thanks to my friendship with former president Scot Evans. In the 15 years I’ve known Scot he has inspired me to give back to the equestrian community that has 1given me so much. He instilled in me the importance of supporting our own, looking after our fellow horsemen and women during their time of need and rallying together as a community behind our friends when times get tough. Scot doesn’t just talk, he lives this philosophy and I am inspired by his example.

In the next year I’d like to hire a development director to work with me in putting my many ideas into action. We’re in the process of designing a new logo and promoting our newly revamped mission 9statement, so I hope in the coming months to create a lot of buzz about the “new” EAF.

How do you envision the future of the organization?

I hope to see us grow on both a large and small scale. In the 7next few years I’d like to see us become known throughout the horse world. There are 22 disciplines recognized by the USEF, and we’re only familiar to three of them. This needs to change. I’d like to see us expand nationwide. Since we began in 1996 we’ve given assistance to recipients from nearly all the 50 states, yet we primarily fundraise on the East Coast and in Florida. I also wish to come up with a signature event — similar to an Alex’s Lemonade Stand — that people can take with them to shows and produce inexpensively and with little effort that can raise both funds and awareness for our cause.

What do you consider the biggest strength of EAF?

The EAF is incredibly expedient in how quickly we respond to 8requests for help. Janise Gray, our Director of Grant Recipient process applications and get help to people as quickly as possible.

Elvis and Priscilla’s interest in horses was deepened when they saw a Tennessee Walking Horse World named The horse inspired Elvis to buy a black Tennessee Walking Horse for himself that he named Bear. Priscilla fondly remembers that Elvis would dress for whichever horse he was riding, wearing dressing in a suit to ride the Walking Horse, Bear. Priscilla recalls that their Walking Horses were shod naturally, without pads on their front feet like a show horse. Elvis would ride down to the fence line of Graceland that borders the road, and people would stop their cars to watch. “He would show the fans the beautiful gait that he loved; it was so smooth and pleasant,” she said. “Elvis was an entertainer and he loved to show his horses to his fans.”

Priscilla explained that although they both fell in love with the Tennessee Walking Horse breed, they didn’t know much about them in the show world. “We knew a little bit of the lingo, but we didn’t know what went on behind the scenes,” she said. “We were very naive in thinking that’s just the way these horses were. We were novice horse owners.” Tennessee Walking Horse named Ebony’s Double. It’s really special when you see a horse and rider combination come together like that. They connect and that momentum carries them forward to the next stage in their growth. Peyton made her international debut at Spruce Meadows in 2011. It’s been so inspiring to watch her go from whizzing around the Children’s Jumpers to killing it at the 1.40m. I got a chance to catch up with Petyon, who is 16 and based out of Rancho Murieta in California, after her recent trip to the North American Junior and the Individual competition.

How did you begin your riding career?

My kindergarten teacher scheduled a conference with my parents because I wouldn’t stop behaving like a horse. So she recommended that I start to take lessons.

Who do you train with?

I train with Rudy Leone and Jill Humphrey in Sacramento at Leone Equestrian. I’ve been with them since I started about 12 years ago.
