G rowth and ontogeny The inland water fishes of Africa G rowth is one of the most complex processes for an organism . The relative fecundity ranged between 441 and 3,597 eggs with a mean of 1,702±0.16 eggs while absolute fecundity ranged from 5,838 to 39,208 eggs with a mean of 14,326±0.52 eggs. -

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the feeding habits and the relationship between growth parameters of two characid species during the dry season in River Benue at Makurdi in Nigeria. Methodology and results: Sampling was conducted between November 2005 and April 2006. Total length (TL) and Standard length (SL) were measured to the nearest 0.1 cm and weight to the nearest 0.1g. Analysis of the stomach contents was done by the frequency of occurrence and point methods. The length-weight relationship equations are: Log W=0.3393 + 1.11958Log L (r2 = 0.6182) and Log W= -0.0919 + 1.5362LogL (r2 = 0.7134) for H. forskalii and A. nurse, respectively. Fish materials and whole fish dominated the diet of H. forskalii while fish materials alone formed a significant portion of the diet of A. nurse. Conclusion and application of findings: The growth pattern of the two fish species was determined to be negative allometry. This study has identified the diet of the two characid species in the dry season, which is of importance to fish biologists, aquarists and conservationists as it makes it possible to keep the fish under captivity. Moreover, recent genetic analyses suggest that validity and systematic position of certain species are uncertain and confused, and further revision of entire genus is required. Therefore, we considered to publish our finding from Cuanza River catchment in Angola. In 2007, we captured four adult females of Brycinus sp. in Cuquema River, one of the main tributaries of Cuanza River. These fishes were morphologically and genetically analysed and B. imberi (Peters) and B. lateralis (Boulenger) were identified as the most similar species. Both mentioned species can be easily distinguished from found Brycinus sp. by certain morphological characteristics and by genetic sequences. Since adult males absent in our data set, we recommend future collecting trip focused especially on mentioned males to confirm validity of suggested potentially new species. Alestes baremoze est une espèce soudanienne très abondante dans 1~s trois g7w1ds bassins de Cote d’ivoire que sont le Bandama, le Sassandra et la Comoé. Les A. baremoze de Côte d’ivoire possèdent en règle générale des caractères méristiques différents des populations peuplant les bassins soudano-sahéliens (Niger, Tchad et Nil), puisque dans tous les Ca*sle nombre de rayons branchu.~ de la nageoire anale, le nombre d’écailles en ligne latérale et le nombre de vertèbres sont nettement inférieurs en Côte d’ivoire. Il existe donc certainement un groupe occidental côtier particulier. On ne trouve pas de différence significative entre les sexes lorsque l’on considère les moyennes du nombre de rayons branchus, du nombre d’écailles en ligne latérale et du nombre de vertèbres. La taille moyenne de première maturité sexuelle est de 165 mm pour les mâles et 175 mm pour les femelles, et ce n’est qu’à partir de 220 mm que tous les individus se reproduisent. Les nombres de mâles et de femelles ne dif- fèrent pas significativement, mais les bancs sont généralement constitruk d’individus d’un seul sexe. Dans tous les bassins, les pontes ont lieu durant la crue. La maturation des ovaires dure quutre ci cinq mois, celle des testicules paraît plus longue. La fécondité moyenne des femelles d’A.
