The present study represents the most comprehensive taxonomic sampling of any freshwater crab family globally, and explores the impact of paleodrainage interconnectivity on cladogenesis among freshwater crabs. Phylogenetic analyses of the total evidence data using maximum-likelihood (ML), maximum parsimony (MP), and Bayesian inference (BI) produced a robust statistically well-supported tree topology that reaffirmed the monophyly of the Afrotropical freshwater crab fauna. -

ABSTRACT Investigation into some aspects of the biology and ecology of the freshwater crab, Sudanonautes floweri (De Man, 1901) in River Ogbomwen, Edo State, southern, Nigeria was carried out between February and July 2006. The study revealed that the crab species were widespread and abundant in the river. Abundance in terms of number and biomass was more during the wet season with at a peak in the months of June and July. The crab grew allometrically attaining a maximum total length and weight of 11.5 cm and 65 g respectively. The condition factor ranged from 8.60-9.45. These values did not vary with size and sex of the crab but showed seasonal variations. Females of Sudanonautes floweri were more abundant although not significantly different from the expected 1:1 ratio. There were some sexually matured females with stages III gonad development. Fecundity estimate ranged from 400 to 650 eggs. The gonadosomatic index varied between 14.97 and 24.11%. Feeding habits varied slightly with size with larger sized crabs feeding on more and varied food particles. -

ABSTRACT Freshwater crabs are one of the macro-invertebrate groups that are particularly ecologically important in the inland waters on a global scale. In addition to the ecological significance of freshwater crabs they are also medically important as medical and pharmaceutical materials (i.e. row material in chitin and chitosan production). However, uncooked freshwater crabs are also medically important as a treat for human health in Asia, Africa, and the Neotropics. Furthermore, they are consumed as food and are used as food additive and fertilizer; especially crab processing residues are used as feed additive. Except Eriocheir sinensis, other freshwater crab species are provided only by fishing from natural resources (i.e. river, lake and pond). In recent years, various production methods are employed for the grow-out of E. sinensis. For example, net- pens installed in shallow lakes, earthen ponds, paddy fields, and small lakes and reservoirs are the most common systems employed for grow-out. On the other hand, earthen ponds and paddy fields are commonly used for seed rearing of the crab. In conclusion, this review shows that freshwater crabs have potentials as an edible and culture candidate species. Cumberlidge* Abstract The entire collection of African and Madagascan freshwater crabs in the Museum of Natural History. Vienna has been re-evaluated. A great deal of incorrectly determined and unidentified material has now been identified, and the nomenclature of correctly identified specimens has been updated to conform to modern usage. The collection has been shown to include 16 species of Potamonauies, 6 species of Sudanonauies, 2 species each of Platythelphusa, Hydrothelphusa, and Deckema, and 1 species each of Potamonemus, Louisea, Liheronauies, Gecarcinaules and Potamon. Notable additions brought to light include the little known species Louisea edeaensis, Potamonemus sachsi, Platythelphusa conculaia. Potamonauies pilosus. P. neumanni, P. triangulus and P. walderi. Zusammenfassung Der Bestand der SuBwasserkrabben aus Afrika und Madagaskar in der Sammlung des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien wurde untersucht. Unbestimmtes Material wurde determiniert; die meisten Bestimmun- gen waren zu korrigieren bzw. die Namen dem jetzigen Stand der Taxonomie dieser Gruppe anzupassen. In der Sammlung befinden sich 16 Arten der Gattung Potamonauies, 6 Arten der Gattung Sudanonauies, je zwei Arten der Gattungen Platythelphusa, Deckenla und Hydrothelphusa, sowie je eine Art der Gattungen Potamonemus, Louisea. Liheronautes, Gecarcinaules. und Potamon. Bemerkenswert ist das Vorhandensein einiger nur von wenigen Exemplaren bekannte Arten, wie Louisea edeaensis, Potamonemus sachsi, Platythelphusa conculaia, Potamonauies pilosus. P. neumanni, P. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The rare and endangered Cameroonian potamonautid freshwater crab Louisea edeaensis (Bott, 1969) was recently redis- covered during a biological inventory of the freshwater decapods of southern Cameroon. The previous record dated back more than 100 years. The new specimens allow an updated diagnosis of the species based on comparisons of important taxonomic characters. Photographs of the carapace, gonopods, third maxillipeds, and chelipeds of the largest adult male specimen from Lake Ossa, Cameroon are provided, as are the first photographs of living specimens. -

The crabs were collected from burrows in the banks of small streams as well as from the nearby Gambia River in Niokolo Koba National Park. This new species is distinguished from Senegalese congeners by a combination of characters of the carapace, chelipeds, thoracic sternum, and gonopods. The new species is compared to other freshwater crabs from the family Potamonautidae found in West Africa. RÉSUMÉ Une nouvelle espèce de crabe d’eau douce ouest africain du genre Potamonautes est décrite à partir de spécimens récoltés au Sénégal. Ces crabes furent récoltés dans des terriers dans des bancs de petits ruisseaux aussi bien que dans la proche Gambia River dans le Parc National du Niokolo Koba. La nouvelle espèce se distingue de ses congénères sénégalais par un ensemble de caractères de la carapace, les pinces, le sternum thoracique et les gonopodes. La nouvelle espèce est comparée à d’autres crabes d’eau douce de la famille des Potamonautidae trouvés en Afrique de l’Ouest. INTRODUCTION The African potamonautid freshwater crab genus Potamonautes MacLeay, 1838, includes over 70 species (Ng et al., 2008) and is widely distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile Basin as far north as Cairo.
