QUARTERBACK KYLE ORTON

On playing a team for the second time in the season “It’s kind of a chess match throughout the week — what are they going to do to adjust? Are we going to do all of the same things that were successful against them? What are we going to take out of our initial game plan from a couple of weeks ago? I think it’s a little chess game throughout the week, but you get into the first couple of series and understand how they’re going to attack you and you go from there.”

On whether outside distractions affect the team’s focus “No, not really. I think everybody in this building is focused on winning games. Plus, I think everybody understands when you’re 3-8 everybody feels the heat — players included and coaches. That’s just how it is. You’re here to win football games and we haven’t done a great job of that, so everybody’s focus is just to get back on the field and play as hard as we can and win a game.”

On whether outside distractions add pressure to the team “No, I think that just the type of players that we have — we’re showing up every day to work hard and nothing is going to make this right until we win and win consistently on the field.”

On what motivates the team to play hard for the rest of the season “Your organization — you play for the respect of your owner, you play for your teammates and you play for your fans, and that’s it.”

On the individual success he’s had this season “I’d like to win the last five games of the season. I think we’ve talked all year about playing our best football throughout the second half of the season. We’re in that, so let’s just go out and win this game. We have three divisional games — so they’re all big games for us — and just go out and play good football to close it out.”

On his chemistry with WR “I have a lot of confidence in (Lloyd) and he proves me right…he makes great plays, makes spectacular catches. I’m certainly not trying to turn the football over, by any means, but any time we feel like we have a good chance of completing the pass and the risk of a turnover is low, then yeah — we’re going to throw it up to him.”

On giving WR Brandon Lloyd a chance to make plays “I think each situation in the game is different — where you’re at on the field, where you’re at on the scoreboard — just where you’re at in the game. You try to take the shots when it’s the right point in the game and you try not to take those when ball security is a little bit more of a factor.”

On the team’s difficulty with converting on third down in the past two games “Third-and-10 is the common thread and you just look at percentages throughout the league — the best offenses in the league, they don’t convert those at a high clip and we’re not going to either. That’s just a reality of football. So, like I’ve been saying, the better we can do on first and second down, the better we’ll do on third down.”

On whether he prefers running or passing on first and second down “I think it’s just a nice mix — I think (RB) Knowshon (Moreno) is playing his best football of the year right now and running really hard and getting us good yardage — as much as we can get him the football, the better.”

On Chiefs QB “He’s having a great season. He’s executing and they’re playing awesomely and (he’s) playing really well.”

On WR Eric Decker “He’s played a lot on special teams and I know he’s done a good job there. He had a nice catch or two for us in the game last week and he’s certainly been practicing well, which is tough for a guy — you saw the success he had in college — and to come here and play a special-teams role, but still improve your game on the practice field is a testament to his work ethic and he’s just making himself a better football player.”

On the Broncos success starting fast the last three games “In a tough place, especially, if we can settle down that crowd and get the lead, it’d be great. When you’re playing a football team that likes to run the ball as much as (Kansas City) does — if you can get out to a couple-score lead and maybe take them out of their game plan, that’d be great. Just to keep it going for us as an offense — we’re going out there with a ton of confidence to start the game out playing with a really high efficiency, really high rhythm and we’d love just to keep that going.”

On whether he felt like the Broncos got away from the run last week “That’s hard to say. I’ve been saying that because we have a lot of plays where they are run-pass calls. We might be trying to run the football, but if the look isn’t there, we aren’t going to run it into a bad look. I think it can be a little bit misleading in certain points of the game saying we got away from something, when maybe the look wasn’t the right look to run the football.”
