Type specimens from the collection of the polyneopteran insect orders (Dermaptera, Blattodea, Orthoptera, Phasmatodea) deposited in the Department of Entomology, National Museum, Prague are catalogued. We provide precise infor- mation about types of 100 taxa (5 species of Dermaptera, 3 species of Blattodea, 4 species of Phasmatodea, 55 species of Caelifera, and 33 species of Ensifera), including holotypes of 38 taxa. The year of publication of Calliptamus tenuicer- cis anatolicus MaĜan, 1952 and Calliptamus tenuicercis iracus MaĜan, 1952 are corrected. The authorship of the names traditionally ascribed to J. Obenberger is discussed in detail. Only the name Podisma alpinum carinthiacum Obenberger, 1926 is available since the publication by OBENBERGER (1926a). ‘Stenobothrus (Stauroderus) biguttulus ssp. bicolor Charp. 1825’ and ‘Stenobothrus (Stau- roderus) ssp. collinus Karny’ sensu OBENBERGER (1926a,b) refer to Gryllus bicolor Charpentier, 1825 and Stauroderus biguttulus var. collina Karny, 1907, respectively, which both have to be considered available already since their original descriptions by CHARPENTIER (1825) and KARNY (1907). The genus consists of two main elements, a northern temperate group of four species and a southern ternperate group of nine. The genus Metromerus Uvarov is synonymized with Calliptamus. A provisional key to genera in the sub-family Calliptaminae has been drawn up, together with keys to species and subspecies in the genus Cailiptamus. Observations are given on polymorphism in the genus, geographical vanation, and posible correlation of variation with climatic factors. -

Page 1/21 Abstract The red imported re ant (RIFA), Solenopsis invicta Buren is native to South America and is known as a global problematic invasive species. This study focused on the molecular response of RIFA by comparing gene expression proles after exposing ants to low (10℃) and high (40℃) temperature stress and comparing to untreated controls (30℃). A total of 99,085 unigenes were obtained, of which 19,154 were annotated with gene descriptions, gene ontology terms, and metabolic pathways. 86 gene ontology (GO) functional sub-groups and 23 EggNOG terms resulted. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) with log2FC ≥ 10 were screened and were compared at different temperatures. We found 203, 48, and 66 specic DEGs co-regulated at 10, 20, and 40℃. Comparing transcriptome proles for differential gene expression resulted in various DE proteins and genes, including cytochrome P450, NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1, cuticle protein and heat shock protein (HSP) which have previously been reported to be involved in cold and high temperature resistance. -

Klompen Advisor Graduate Program in Entomology Copyright by Hojun Song 2006 ABSTRACT The systematics of Cyrtacanthacridinae (Orthoptera: Acrididae) is investigated to study the evolution of locust phase polyphenism, biogeography, and the evolution of male genitalia. In Chapter Two, I present a comprehensive taxonomic synopsis of the genus Schistocerca Stål. I review the taxonomic history, include an identification key to species, revise the species concepts of six species and describe a new species. In Chapter Three, I present a morphological phylogeny of Schistocerca, focusing on the biogeography. The phylogeny places the desert locust S. gregaria deep within the New World clade, suggesting that the desert locust originated from the New World. In Chapter Four, I review the systematics of Cyrtacanthacridinae and present a phylogeny based on morphology. Evolution of taxonomically important characters is investigated using a character optimization analysis. The biogeography of the subfamily is also addressed. In Chapter Five, I present a comprehensive review the recent advances in the study of locust phase polyphenism from various disciplines. The review reveals that locust phase polyphenism is a complex phenomenon consisting of numerous density-dependent phenotypically plastic traits. -

The chotts in Algeria are temporary salt lakes recognized as important wintering sites of water birds but neglected in terms of the diversity of the insects living on their banks. Around a chott in the wetland complex in the high plains near Constan- tine (eastern Algeria), more than half of the species of plants are annuals that dry out in summer, a situation that prompted us to sample the vegetation in spring over a period of two years. Three zones were identifi ed based on an analysis of the vegetation and measurements of the salt content of the soils. Surveys carried out at monthly intervals over the course of a year revealed temporal and spatial variations in biodiversity and abundance of grasshoppers. The inner zone is colonized by halophilic plants and only one grasshopper species (Dericorys millierei) occurs there throughout the year. -
Transcriptome Assembly for a Colour-Polymorphic Grasshopper

Hoffman2 and Holger Schielzeth1 Abstract Background: The club-legged grasshopper Gomphocerus sibiricus is a Gomphocerinae grasshopper with a promising future as model species for studying the maintenance of colour-polymorphism, the genetics of sexual ornamentation and genome size evolution. However, limited molecular resources are available for this species. Here, we present a de novo transcriptome assembly as reference resource for gene expression studies. We used high- throughput Illumina sequencing to generate 5,070,036 paired-end reads after quality filtering. We then combined the best-assembled contigs from three different de novo transcriptome assemblers (Trinity, SOAPdenovo-trans and Oases/Velvet) into a single assembly. Results: This resulted in 82,251 contigs with a N50 of 1357 and a TransRate assembly score of 0.325, which compares favourably with other orthopteran transcriptome assemblies. Around 87% of the transcripts could be annotated using InterProScan 5, BLASTx and the dammit! annotation pipeline. We identified a number of genes involved in pigmentation and green pigment metabolism pathways. Furthermore, we identified 76,221 putative single nucleotide polymorphisms residing in 8400 contigs. We also assembled the mitochondrial genome and investigated levels of sequence divergence with other species from the genus Gomphocerus. Finally, we detected and assembled Wolbachia sequences, which revealed close sequence similarity to the strain pel wPip. Conclusions: Our study has generated a significant resource for uncovering genotype-phenotype associations in a species with an extraordinarily large genome, while also providing mitochondrial and Wolbachia sequences that will be useful for comparative studies.
