Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate. -

No. 34 March 1972 An Interview With Damon Knight Conducted by Paul Walker* What has been the most interesting development in science fiction since 1960? What has been the most obnoxious, to you, personally? The most interesting development would have to be the movement of com mercial science fiction back toward the standards of literary science fiction from which it diverged about 70 years ago. This is what's putting some life back into the field for the first time since the early 50's. The least pleasant develop ment, I guess, would be Sol Cohen's reprint magazines. One way of measuring the health of the field is by counting the number of good new writers who appear in it each year. I wrote a piece about this for the Clarion anthology; the chart that goes with it shows a peak (24) in 1930, another (17) in 1941, another (28) in 1951, and then a long slow decline to 1965, the last year for which I had records — the figure there was 1. I have not been able to draw the rest of that line, but I think I know what it would look like. How has the role of editor fared in the same time? Generally speaking, if you're talking about the magazines and most of the paperbacks, I think science fiction editing has been a downhill thing since 1950 — more routine, less rewarding, less effective. Struggling to keep dead things afloat is no fun for anybody. As far as I'm concerned, my experience is not typical. -

SCIENCE FICTION AND ITS PAST RELATIONS WITH THE ACADEMY BY VICTOR GRECH, CLARE VASSALLO AND IVAN CALLUS © 2016, Victor Grech, Clare Vassallo and Ivan Callus Art by Jason Rennie Ebook Design by Jason Rennie Edited by Jason Rennie, Ben Zwycky www.sciphijournal.com [email protected] 1 SCIENCE FICTION AND ITS PAST RELATIONS WITH THE ACADEMY Victor Grech, Clare Vassallo and Ivan Callus ‘What was once … a secret movement has become part of the cultural wallpaper’ SF authors have traditionally spurned the disdain of critics who ‘sneer the ineradicable sneer’ at SF authors and assert that SF is too shallow for serious consideration, and such critics have been in turn accused of being ‘ignorant or afraid of science […] rejecting […] the universe in favor of a small human circle, limited in time and place to their own lifetimes’.1 In some ways, SF partakes of some of the properties of fantastic literature, as defined by Todorov,2 insofar as SF leads us to worlds that do not exist, and with readerly agreement, the narratee is ‘transported to a scenario more magical and uplifting than the real, coarse everyday world’.3 Tolkien calls this combination of fantastic, miraculous deliverance and poignant eucatastrophe, the sense of evangelium, a means with which authors impart good news and happy endings.4 This accords with Frederic Jameson’s contention that SF ‘give us ‘images’ of the future […] but rather defamiliarize [s] and restructure [s] our experience of our own present’.5 However, until recently, in the eyes of the academy, SF was treated with a degree of disdain by the assemblage of ‘serious’ mainstream and classical literature. -

"SF," has become the standard term used in both casual reference to the genre as well as in both popular and scholarly criticism. I use "SF" to denote the genre as a whole, but I employ "PSF," which stands for pulp-science fiction, specifically to denote that science fiction which was written in the pulp era, defined by Mike Ashley in his three volume history, The History of Science Fiction Magazines (2000), as occurring between the years 1926- 1954. -
