Please, in strict confidence get in contact with Mr. K. [SIC] and with Mr. MEADE [sic] and find out everything that is necessary. If you think it would be inadvisable to use Mr. K with respect to what Mr. K told you, we can leave this matter without consequences. In my last letter I asked you to inquire more about K. in the National Press Club. We simply cannot use someone who does not have a good business reputation. Please be very careful in this matter. There is some criticism about the work which we are doing. -

University Archives Inventory Record Group Number: UR001.03 Title: Burney Lynch Parkinson Presidential Records Date: 1926-1969 Bulk Date: 1932-1952 Extent: 42 boxes Creator: Burney Lynch Parkinson Administrative/Biographical Notes: Burney Lynch Parkinson (1887-1972) was an educator from Lincoln, Tennessee. He received his B.S. from Erskine College in 1909, and rose up the administrative ranks from English teacher in Laurens, South Carolina public schools. He received his M.A. from Peabody College in 1920, and Ph.D. from Peabody in 1926, after which he became president of Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC in 1927. He was employed as Director of Teacher Training, Certification, and Elementary Education at the Alabama Dept. of Education just before coming to MSCW to become president in 1932. In December 1932, the university was re-accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, ending the crisis brought on the purge of faculty under Governor Theodore Bilbo, but appropriations to the university were cut by 54 percent, and faculty and staff were reduced by 33 percent, as enrollment had declined from 1410 in 1929 to 804 in 1932. Parkinson authorized a study of MSCW by Peabody college, ultimately pursuing its recommendations to focus on liberal arts at the cost of its traditional role in industrial, vocational, and technical education. Building projects were kept to a minimum during the Parkinson years. Old Main was restored and named for Mary Calloway in 1938. Franklin Hall was converted to a dorm, and the Whitfield Gymnasium into a student center with the Golden Goose Tearoom inside. Parkinson Hall was constructed in 1951 and named for Dr. -

MILITARY GOVERNMENT ZONAL LEGISLATION (1) Legal Status and Organization The legal basis for Military Government legislation in the four zones is the Four Power Statement of June 5, 1945,1 which placed each zone under the authority of its respective commander-in-chief. In the United States zone, this authority was first combined-after the dissolution of SHAEF in July, 1945-with the military command (USFET), Gen- eral Eisenhower being simultaneously Military Governor and Com manding General with headquarters in Frankfort. 2 By late 1945, how- ever, the task of government had begun to shift to Berlin where the Office of Military Government for Germany (US)-set up originally to staff the American representation on the Control Council-operated under General Lucius D. SURVEY OF ISSUES ECOVERY from the effects of World War II led the Western European countries on to a broad issue: Should they seek eco- nomic viability in a progressive integration of the non-Soviet world or in narrower frameworks implying some discrimination against United States commerce? Since their dollar needs showed a persistent tendency to exceed dollar availabilities during the recovery period and their dollar reserves proved either too small or too volatile, many coun- tries, in particular Britain, found it necessary to make preparations for the latter alternative. -

Beal_Text 12/12/05 5:50 PM Page 8 one The American Occupation and Agents of Reeducation 1945-1950 henry cowell and the office of war information Between the end of World War I and the advent of the Third Reich, many American composers—George Antheil, Marc Blitzstein, Ruth Crawford, Conlon Nancarrow, Roger Sessions, Adolph Weiss, and others (most notably, Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, and Roy Harris, who studied with Nadia Boulanger in France)—contributed to American music’s pres- ence on the European continent. As one of the most adventurous com- posers of his generation, Henry Cowell (1897–1965) toured Europe several times before 1933. Traveling to the continent in early June 1923, Cowell played some of his own works in a concert on the ship, and visiting Germany that fall he performed his new piano works in Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich. His compositions, which pioneered the use of chromatic forearm and fist clusters and inside-the-piano (“string piano”) techniques, were “extremely well received and reviewed in Berlin,” a city that, according to the com- poser, “had heard a little more modern music than Leipzig,” where a hos- tile audience started a fistfight on stage.1 A Leipzig critic gave his review a futuristic slant, comparing Cowell’s music to the noisy grind of modern cities; another simply called it noise. Reporting on Cowell’s Berlin concert, Hugo Leichtentritt considered him “the only American representative of musical modernism.” Many writers praised Cowell’s keyboard talents while questioning the music’s quality.2 Such reviews established the tone 8 Beal_Text 12/12/05 5:50 PM Page 9 for the German reception of unconventional American music—usually performed by the composers themselves—that challenged definitions of western art music as well as stylistic conventions and aesthetic boundaries of taste and technique. -

Contact: [email protected] 1 Prudence and Controversy: The New York Public Library Responds to Post-War Anticommunist Pressures Stephen Francoeur Baruch College [Post-print version accepted for publication in the September 2011 issue of Library & Information History. http://maney.co.uk/index.php/journals/lbh/] Abstract As the New York Public Library entered the post-war era in the late 1940s, its operations fell under the zealous scrutiny of self-styled ‗redhunters‘ intent upon rooting out library materials and staffers deemed un-American and politically subversive. The high point of attacks upon the New York Public Library came during the years 1947-1954, a period that witnessed the Soviet atomic bomb, the Berlin airlift, and the Korean War. This article charts the narrow and carefully wrought trail blazed by the library‘s leadership during that period. Through a reading of materials in the library archives, we see how political pressures were perceived and handled by library management and staff. We witness remarkable examples of brave defense of intellectual freedom alongside episodes of prudent equivocation. At the heart of the library‘s situation stood the contradictions between the principled commitments of individual library leaders and the practical political considerations underlying the library‘s viability.
