The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished.

HELLISH 2050 RESOLVING THE CIVILISATIONAL CLASH [email protected] RATIONALITY VERSUS DOGMA Here is the preserved finger of Galileo. It is in the Galileo museum in Florence. I have seen it. While I was being formally interviewed by the deputy HR Director and the Head of the Physics Department at the University of Bath, regarding my views on Islam, I thought of Galileo and his battle against religious dogma. Some four centuries on, his finger admonishes the University of Bath, and its siding with Islam rather than with rationality and modern science. My experience is utterly surreal. “Eppur si muove” 1 Dedication: This book is dedicated to all of the children who find themselves growing up in an increasingly Islamised world. You did not deserve to be abandoned by your Governments. You should be enjoying the rights and freedoms that your parents enjoyed. Cover artwork: the three goddesses. The religious ideology of Islam is today strictly monotheistic. However, for a brief period it was polytheistic, with a male god, Allah, and his three female companion goddesses, whose names were Al-Lat, Al-Uzza and Manat — Moon, Venus and Fate. The Islamic prophet Mohammed initially praised these three goddesses, but later believed that the revelation of their existence had been sent from Satan rather than Allah. The verses in the Koran describing them, the “Satanic Verses”, were subsequently removed. This raises the question: how many other verses might also have been ‘inspired by Satan’, but not removed? From the descriptions given in Islamic scripture, it is clear that the area that Mohammed inhabited with olive trees and rivers could not have been Mecca.

Popular Religion in Russia This book dispels the widely held view that paganism survived in Russia along- side Orthodox Christianity, demonstrating that ‘double belief’, dvoeverie, is in fact an academic myth. Scholars, citing the medieval origins of the term, have often portrayed Russian Christianity as uniquely muddied by paganism, with ‘double-believing’ Christians consciously or unconsciously preserving pagan traditions even into the twentieth century. It shows how the concept of dvoeverie arose with nineteenth-century scholars obsessed with the Russian ‘folk’ and was perpetuated as a propaganda tool in the Soviet period, colouring our percep- tion of both popular faith in Russia and medieval Russian culture for over a century. It surveys the wide variety of uses of the term from the eleventh to the seventeenth century, and contrasts them to its use in modern historiography, concluding that our modern interpretation of dvoeverie would not have been recognized by medieval clerics, and that ‘double belief’ is a modern academic construct. Furthermore, it offers a brief foray into medieval Orthodoxy via the mind of the believer, through the language and literature of the period. If clerics didn’t use the word dvoeverie to identify acts as unorthodox, which words did they use, and what can these words tell us about popular faith? Was the populace of Rus really more resistant to Christianization than its European counterparts? What was it about popular culture that alarmed the clergy of medieval Rus, and were their concerns so very different from those of Western European clergymen, or the clergy of other neophyte peoples? Stella Rock is Senior Research Fellow in History at the University of Sussex.

It concentrates on social, religious, cultural and political topics and mostly ignores armed conflict and terrorism. 1.1 What the Liberal Left Thinks of Islam (Courtesy of The Guardian) The Guardian newspaper publishes an enormous number of articles by Muslims and their supporters complaining about the mistreatment of Muslims by the Media or the government, or supporting Muslims in the latest controversy concerning Islam. Here are the titles of some recent examples: "The fight against Islamophobia is going backward" "How the hijab – and H&M – are reshaping mainstream British culture" "The Guardian view on Muslims in the west: marginalised by mistrust" "It’s time the media treated Muslims fairly" "Ministers fuelling Muslim radicalisation" "Why Islam doesn’t need a reformation" "Diversity and immigration are not the problem. Political courage is" To see such articles in a newspaper known for extreme liberal and left-wing opinions is not a surprise.
