These issues include: families in cults; parental (especially mothers’) roles in cults; the impact that cult leaders have on families; the destruction of family intimacy; child abuse; issues encountered by noncustodial parents; the impact on cognitive, psychological, and moral development; and health issues. The authors borrow from numerous the- oretical perspectives to illustrate their points, including self psychology, developmental theory, and the sociology of religion. They conclude with a discussion of the therapeutic challenges that therapists face when working with cult-involved clients and make preliminary recommendations for treatment. By the late 1970s, the group had engendered a great deal of academic and popular debate due to, among other things, its controversial sexual practices. In this article, I examine one such practice, namely, Flirty Fishing, in which many women in the group used their sexuality in combination with scriptural discussions as a method of proselytization. Utilizing social theories of the body, I explore the ways that many of the women may have adopted strategies that helped them to perceive their bodies and their behaviours in ways that did not threaten their senses of self. I consider both how women were able to endure the physical and emotional aspects of Flirty Fishing, and how they contextualized their behaviour in terms of the group’s general dynamics and belief system. Thus, I explore not only the organizational imposition of certain modes of behaviour on the body, but also individual perceptions of, responses to, and negotiations of them. Importantly, this article applies a theoretical approach to the study of new religious movements that few scholars thus far have explored. To accumulate data, I conducted interviews and participated in various rituals at the Church of Scientology in St. Paul, Minnesota. I outline and examine the data in four sections: the initiation process of the latent member, their consumption patterns in the Church, social interactions between members, and how these interactions bridge the Church into the public arena.     Cults and Cosmic Consciousness: Religious Vision in the American 1960s CAMILLE PAGLIA 1. eclipse by politics Commentary on the 1960s has been mas- sive. Law and politics in that turbulent decade are well doc- umented but remain controversial, and the same thing can be said of contemporary innovations in mass media and the arts. One major area remains ambiguous or poorly assimi- lated, however—the new religious vision, which for a tanta- lizing moment in the American sixties brought East and West together in a progressive cultural synthesis. Its promise was never completely fulfilled, for reasons I will try to sketch here. But the depth and authenticity of that spiritual shift need to be more widely acknowledged. A political model currently governs interpretations of the sixties because of the enduring reform movements born in that period, including environmentalism, feminism, and gay liberation. Their mobilizing energy, as well as the organiza- tional style that would also be adopted by antiwar protests, initially came from the civil rights movement sparked by the us Supreme Court’s 1954 decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional. In that crusade, it must be remembered, ordained Protestant ministers such as Martin Luther King, Jr., played a leading role, as they also had in nineteenth-century abolitionism. The civil rights movement, with its hymns and anthems, appealed not just to secular standards of social justice but to a higher moral code.     The Not-So-New Religious Movements: Changes in ‘the Cult Scene’ over the Past Forty Years EILEEN BARKER London School of Economics Abstract New religious movements (NRMs) tend to exhibit certain characteris- tics that change with the arrival of second and subsequent generations. The paper explores some of the internally motivated revisions that may be due to demographic changes or disappointed expectations, and some of the changes brought about through the economic, politi- cal, technological, legal and cultural influences from the wider society. Although there are always exceptions, unqualified boundaries tend to become more porous and negotiable as the movements accommodate to the outside world and ‘denominationalise’. The paper ends with a brief description of some of the more general changes in ‘the cult scene’ over the past 40 years.     chapter 18 From the Children of God to the Family International A Story of Radical Christianity and De-radicalising Transformation Eileen Barker Introduction The Family International (tfi), as it has called itself since 2004, has operated under a number of different names throughout its 50-year history. It first became widely known as the Children of God (CoG) after being founded in 1968 as part of the Jesus Movement in California by David Berg (1919–1994), known to his followers as Moses David, Mo, or ‘Dad’. Embracing a literalist brand of revolutionary Christianity, CoG/tfi shares many of its beliefs and practices with other fundamentalist Christian groups. It has, however, differed quite radically from mainstream Christianity in Berg’s interpretation of ‘the Law of Love’, which has encouraged an uncommonly open attitude towards sexual relationships. From its early beginnings, the movement received notoriety as one of the ‘cults’ or ‘sects’ that were becoming increasingly visible in the West at that time, and, like the other ‘world-rejecting movements’ (Wallis 1984) that were giving rise to public concern, it has been treated with suspicion and distrust throughout most of its existence. Some of these new religions, such as the Unification Church (the Moonies) and The Way International, drew much of their theology from the Christian tradition; others, such as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (iskcon), The Divine Light Mission, Soka Gakkai, and the neo-sannyasins of Bhagwan Rajneesh (later known as Osho), owed their origins to non-Christian beliefs.
