Inequality on Country Radio: 2019 in Review By Jada E. Watson in partnership with CMT’s Equal Play Campaign This research is supported by an Insight Development Grant from 17 February 2020 Twenty years ago, today, the Dixie Chicks celebrated their third consecutive week in the #1 position of the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks Chart with “Cowboy Take Me Away”. Joining the trio in the chart’s top positions were Faith Hill with “Breathe” at #5, Reba McEntire with “What Do You Say” at #6, Martina McBride with “Love’s the Only House” at #10, Jo Dee Messina with “Because You Love Me” at #11, SheDAISY with “This Woman Needs” at #12, LeeAnn Rimes with “Big Deal” at #15, and Chely Wright with “It Was” at #19. That’s 8 songs by women in the Top 20 positions of the radio chart – making up 40% of the week’s top songs. An additional 12 songs by female artists charted outside of the Top 20 on the 19 February 2000 chart, bringing the count to 20 songs (26.7%) on the chart.1 Last year in this same week, just 2 songs by women were in the Top 20 – Carrie Underwood’s “Love Wins” at #14 and Kelsea Ballerini’s “Miss Me More” at #18, making up 10% of the top songs. Eight other songs by women ranked in the bottom 40 positions of the chart – bringing the count to just 10 songs (16.7%) of the week’s chart.2 Over the course of this 20-year period, the culture of Billboard’s airplay chart changed so drastically that the percentage of songs by women in the Top 20 declined 75%.

  • Kevin Mcmanus Has Been Our Engineer Since Our First Session. He Is Known to the World of Recording As an Expert Engineer and Producer
WE”RE TURNING 35 It’s hard to believe, but in 2021, Royal Records celebrates 35 years!!! It’s been a wild ride. Our very first session was in 1986. We were both recording on separate labels – Jerry was on Rhythm and I was on Ranch House. We were both happy and very grateful to be on these labels, but as we became closer friends, we wanted to branch out on our own. Both Wade Driver (owner of Rhythm Records) and Darryl McMillan (owner of Ranch House Records) were both extremely gracious and helpful in getting us started. Elmer Sheffield (ESP Recordings) was also integral in our beginnings. In June of 1986 we went to Nashville with a pocketful of tunes and absolutely no idea of what we were doing. Kevin McManus had engineered several other square dance labels over the years, so he was able to work around the two novices he had in his studio. That session produced some of our biggest hits – Beautiful Brown Eyes, Morning Sky, and the patter record Josh/Ricky. Watching the musicians and Kevin do their magic in the studio was absolutely amazing. And now, 35 years later, it is still as amazing! Jerry and I have been very fortunate to have some of world’s best musicians recording music for Royal Records. These Nashville “pickers” are the cream of the crop!!! So, to acknowledge our anniversary, Jerry and I would like to introduce you to the amazing artists that we are honored to have making and producing our music. We have used various musicians over the years.

  • CMA Awards: a Study of Nominees and Winners, 2000-2019 JADA E
Gender Representation of CMA Awards: A Study of Nominees and Winners, 2000-2019 JADA E. WATSON, @data_jada VIDEO OF THE YEAR Between 2000 and 2019, 101 artists were nominated for the Music Video of the Year Award (6 videos were nominated in 2013). Male artists had 57 nominations, while women had 34 and male-female ensembles have had 10. The 101 nominations have been attributed to 42 individual solo artists and ensembles over the last 19 years – 21 of whom have had more than two nominations. The percentage of men, women and male-female ensembles changes only slightly when looking at the number of unique individuals, to 54.8% male artists, 35.7% women, and 9.5% male-female ensembles. None of the nominees in this 20-year period has been an artist of colour. While female artists are certainly under represented in the Music Video category, it is remarkable to note that there are four years in this 20-yr study period in which women had more nominations than male artists (2000, 2001, 2014 and 2015), and two in which they had the same number of nominations (2010 and 2013). Despite these strong years, female artists have no nominations in 2002 and 2008. The rise of male-female ensembles in 2008 often results in fewer videos nominated by solo female or all-female groups, but when those two categories are added together, they average about half of the nominations. Women have only won Music Video of the Year 5 out of the 19 years of the award, including the Dixie Chicks (“Goodbye Earl”) in 2000, Sara Evans (“Born to Fly”) in 2001, Taylor Swift (“Love Story”) in 2009, Miranda Lambert (“The House that Built Me”) in 2010, and Maddie & Tae (“Girl in a Country Song”) in 2015.
