Composer and lyricist Sandy Wilson, born in Cheshire, England, 1924, studied at Harrow and Oxford, then at the Old Vie, served in the British Army, 1943-46, began his stage career by contributing material to London revues, "Oranges and Lemons," and "Slings and Arrow," in 1948. He then wrote the book, music, and lyrics for "See You Later," 1951, "See You Again," 1952. In 1953, he wrote lyrics and music for a 1920's pastiche musical, thus creating "The Boy Friend." It ran in England for more than 5 years, opened on Broadway in 1954, played 15 months there and introduced Julie Andrews, as Polly, to the Broadway stage, in 1955 it went on a U.S. tour, then in 1958 a new production started that lasted 2 more years, then in 1970 a revival marked the Broadway debut of Judy Carne(Polly) with Sandy Duncan as Maisie, and then in 1971 Ken Russell produced an adaptation for the screen and brought Twiggy, the super-model, out of retirement at the age of 21 for the roll of Polly. Mr. Wilson wrote and composed "The Buccaneer" in 1955, "Valmouth" in 1958, and "Pieces of Eight," a revue, in 1959. He wrote the music for "Call It Love," 1960; was author and composer of "Divorce Me, Darling," 1965; created the music for ''As Dorothy Parker Once Said," 1968, and "His Monkey Wife," 1971. In that same year, he wrote and appeared in "Sandy Wilson Thanks the Ladies," 1971. Now an American citizen, he continues to write for theater and television. There you have a bit of history about Sandy Wilson and the meteoric history of his whimsical musical spoof"The Boy Friend." The show is packed with marvelous, catchy songs and high-energy dance numbers. Young ladies and their "jeunes hommes," mistaken identities, love lost-and found-are among the ingredients served up in this frothy concoction. It has been a joy to work with this wonderful cast, production staff, and crew and I hope that you sit back and enjoy this glimpse of yesteryear-the Twenties have never looked or sounded so swell! -Stephen D.
