Nouse Web Archives You gotta fight (for your right to make music) Page 1 of 4 News Comment MUSE. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › News Features Reviews Playlists You gotta fight (for your right to make music) By Robin Seaton Thursday 4 May 2006 Robin Seaton met Fightstar in Leeds on their third UK headline tour. They talked about the metal/punk scene and their attempts to forge a post-Busted fanbase You have to admire Charlie Simpson’s optimism, and his bravery. There’s something almost American about his desire for reinvention, something suicidal about his courage in forming a metal/punk band after having left Busted, a group who were one of the most successful manifestations of the legalised child exploitation racket that is pop music. There was almost something postmodern in their management’s attempts to create a patina of ‘rock respectability’ to cover the fundamentally teenager-targeted music. Their (unplugged) guitars, their ‘personalised’ clothes, that bloody endless ‘punk’ gurning. They weren’t fooling anyone, and they knew it. So how did the pretty-boy singer imagine that he could get away with forming a band playing music to punks and metalheads, two groups of music fans notorious for their abilities to sniff out anything fake, popular or safe, then gob on its face and kick its head in? Surely one man and his monobrow could not stand alone against such a tide of beered-up hatred? I went to Leeds to find out. Fightstar’s an appropriate name for a band who’ve had to fight against one kind of fame in order to achieve another.

36 TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2014 LIFESTYLE Gossip Jay Z addresses Drake’s art reference criticisms ay Z has hit out at Drake in a new track. The Roc Nation boss addressed the ‘Hypher’ hitmaker during his verse Jon Jay Electronica’s new song, ‘We Made It’, after the rapper called him “corny” for using art references in his music. Jay Z raps: “Sorry Mrs Drizzy for so much art talk/ Silly me, rappin’ ‘bout that I really bought/ While these rappers rap about guns that they ain’t shot/ And a bunch of other silly thing that they ain’t got.” The reference comes after Drake’s controversial interview with Rolling Stone magazine in February, during which he criticized Jay Z and slated Kanye West’s “questionable” rap lyrics on his ‘Yeezus’ album. He said: “It’s like Hov can’t drop bars these days without at least four art references. I would love to collect [art] at some point, but I think the whole Rap/art world thing is getting kind of corny.” Speaking about ‘Yeezus’, Drake added: “There were some real ques- tionable bars on there.” Itr isn’t the first time Drake has criticized the two rappers, as he admitted he wasn’t on good terms with the stars when he slated Jay Z and Kanye West’s collaborative album ‘Watch The Throne’ on his 2011 track ‘I’m One One’. He admitted: “It was a lack of communication paired with natural competitiveness. But those two are Gods to me.” Liam Gallagher’s ex to write new book iam Gallagher is “very nervous” about former lover Lisa LMoorish’s autobiography.

Exploring the Egg Lake /?Eghés tu Landscape and the Lake One Trail A Collaboration with Knowledge Holders in Wood Buffalo National Park By Laura Peterson A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Faculty of Native Studies University of Alberta © Laura Peterson, 2018 ii Abstract Wood Buffalo National Park (WBNP) was established in the 1920s as a bison sanctuary, and since then it has received major recognition for its wildlife resources, including designations as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar site. But, there has been no formal recognition of its significant cultural heritage. Yet the lands of the park are criss-crossed by multiple overland Aboriginal trails that link together the settlements and areas of land use in the region, and the region itself to other parts of northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories (NWT). The goal of my research was to show how the park’s cultural heritage and values are just as important as its natural values. I do this by using a collaborative approach with local Cree and Chipewyan residents and a Parks Canada archaeologist to document one of the traditional trails in the park and the cultural meanings and stories associated with it. My thesis will discuss this project, consider what this trail research can reveal about the Aboriginal cultural landscape of a northern national park, and more broadly, propose a framework for a revised UNESCO commemorative statement that includes culture. iii Preface This thesis is an original work by Laura Peterson. As a collaborative project working with knowledge holders, the author’s main objective was to listen and learn from the elder’s, record their stories and experiences, and to share this information in the most appropriate and respectful way.
