AASSA currently has a total of 34 member academies and societies representing 30 countries. It is one of the four Regional Networks of IAP, the Global Network of Science Academies. The Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) is Turkish National Academy founded in 1993 with scientific, administrative and financial autonomy and headquarters in Ankara, Turkey. At the moment, TÜBA has 200 members, out of this 36 Honorary, 105 Principal and 59 Associate members. Considering the large number of people suffering from hunger and expected population increase next in two decades, food production system should be re-evaluated in order to overcome food shortage. The world population is expected to increase by additional two billions by 2050, emphasising that the current food production should be increased accordingly. The aims of the present Workshop are to deliberate on behavioral, biophysical, economic, institutional, political, social and technological drivers of the current and the future global food security. The conference will address the food system activities of processing, distributing and consuming food, as well as food production from crop, livestock, tree, freshwater and marine sources; the availability, access, utilization and stability dimensions of food security; and the synergies and trade-offs between economic, environmental, health and social objectives and outcomes. The strong expected impact of climate change ill also be deliberated upon. The conference will thereby range across disciplines and spatiotemporal scales of analysis to span the drivers, activities and outcomes of food systems to encompass both contextualized and holistic treatments of the broad challenge of food security in Asian countries. In order to investigate potential solutions to this issue, and as a joint effort for the advancement of science in Asian countries, AASSA and the Turkish Academy of Sciences will hold a regional workshop on “Sustainable Management of Food Security”. The themes of the workshop are, • Global and local analyses of food security • Enabling policies for local and global food security • Sustainable intensification of food production systems • Urbanization, food value chains and food security • Technological breakthroughs to help feed 9 billion world people • Impact of climatic changes and possible strategies to deal with the same • Competing demands and tradeoffs for land and water resource • The agriculture-nutrition-health nexus • Reducing loss and waste • Business-science cooperation to advance food security Call for abstracts: Applicants are invited to submit a one-page abstract in English with a brief C.V.
