So far, its cytotoxicity, its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities have been studied. Particularly interesting is its notable anti-trypanosomal activity. Introduction Lignans are important components of foods and medicines biosynthetically deriving from the radical coupling of two molecules of coniferyl alcohol at C-8/C-8′ positions (Figure 1). They are classified in different groups—dibenzylfuran, dihydroxybenzylbutane, dibenzylbutyrolactol, dibenzylbutyrolactone, aryltetraline lactone and arylnaphtalene derivatives—on the basis of the skeleton oxidation [1] and of the way in which oxygen is incorporated into the skeleton [2] (Figure 1). Podophyllotoxin and deoxypodophyllotoxin are, perhaps, the most important biologically active lignans, and their properties have been broadly reviewed [3,4]. In these last years, the biological activities of several lignans have been studied in depth [5–7] and among them hinokinin (1) is emerging as a new interesting compound.

The chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods, including HR-EIMS, 1D NMR (1H, 13C, DEPT), 2D NMR (gCOSY, gHSQC, gHMBC, NOESY), and IR spectroscopy. All isolated compounds were tested for the ability to inhibit LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW264.7 macrophages. This review discusses the distribution of lignans in nature according to their structural classification, and it provides a comprehensive summary of their antiviral activities. Among them, two types of antiviral lignans—podophyllotoxin and bicyclol, which are used to treat venereal warts and chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in clinical, serve as examples of using lignans for antivirals—are discussed in some detail. Currently, there is great interest in lignan due to the wide range of biological activities this class of compounds has demonstrated. This review describes the biological activities of cubebin and semi-synthetic derivatives, focusing primarily on Piper cubeba and Zantoxyllum naranjillo. The main biological activities reported were: Anti-inflammatory, antitumor, action in erectile dysfunction, trypanocidal, anti-Leishmania and antimicrobial. In this way, it is possible to conclude that cubebin and its derivatives have shown high capacity to become new bioactive molecules obtained by semi-sinthesys, useful to develop medicines for several pathologies, presenting efficacy, toxicology and quality for human use.
