Panelo • 147 The Model Minority Student: Asian American Students and the Relationships Between Acculturation to Western Values, Family Pressures, and Mental Health Concerns Nathan Divino Panelo As the Asian American student population grows in United States (U.S.) higher education, so does the demand for resources on campus. One major concern facing Asian Americans today is the cultural pres- sure from home which often leads to mental health concerns. Many Asian American students acculturate to Western values in United States colleges, and in doing so, sacrifice part of their traditional iden- tities. As Asian American students acculturate to Western values, it becomes difficult for them to relate to their immigrant parents or first- generation Asian American parents. -

Regional Conference on Diversity Theme: Diversity, Democracy and Federalism: issues, options and opportunities June 7-9, 2011 at Kathmandu, Nepal Key Note Speech and Canadian Model: Mr. Rupak Chattopadhyay, President and CEO Forum of Federations Good morning every one, and thank you Zafar and Katherine for a vey lucid words of welcome, I regret very much that this seminar is not in Islamabad, primarily because Nepal is a very active program country for the Forum of Federations, so I will be constantly pulled out of the seminar over the course of the next three days. I would have liked to stay through the entire program. Nevertheless, I am glad that we could put this together. As you all know that the Forum of Federations through its activities in Pakistan has been active on issues of diversity. Indeed the Forum itself was founded in Canada in 1999 in the context of a challenge to Canadian unity posed by its diversity in 1996. The separtist referendum in Quebec almost split the country. It was in that context that the government of Canada set up the Forum of Federations to bring together like minded countries grappling with the issues of unity and diversity. Countries who could sit around the table and share experiences on how they deal with the issue of diversity in their own context and share practices both best practices but also worst practices because we can learn as much from bad practices as we can from best practices. My remarks this morning will be in two parts. First, I will make some general observations about how federal structures respond to challenges posed by diversity in a comparative context and then, I will draw from the Canadian example to high light how we are coping with matters of diversity. -

Though once commonplace, this claim has become increasingly controversial, challenged by the revisionists of late modernity as well as those who suffer from historical amnesia. As the prodigious Jewish scholar Jacob Neusner has said, “Religion has written much of the history of the West.”3 Or as British sociologist and historian of culture Christopher Dawson once put it, “Western culture has been the atmosphere we breathe and the life we live: it is our own way of life and the way of life of our ancestors; and therefore we know it not merely by documents and monuments, but from our personal experience.”4 Even the notorious atheist Christopher Hitchens agrees that Western culture makes little sense without attending to the contribution of biblical religion: “You are not educated,” he maintains,” if you don’t know the Bible. -

Between May and December 2010, I engaged in semi-structured interviews with twenty-three people who, while living in Ontario, experienced name challenges ranging from persistent, repetitive misspellings and mispronunciations of their original names to cases of significant name alterations on residency documents, and even to situations of exclusion and discrimination. Drawing on critical perspectives from literature on identity and performativity, science and technology studies, race and immigration, affect, and onomastics (the study of names), I establish that name challenges are a form of “identity labour” required of many people who immigrate to Ontario. I also describe how individuals’ identity labour changes over time. In response to name challenges, and the need to balance between their sometimes-simultaneous audiences, participants design their names for life in Ontario—by deciding which audiences to privilege, they choose where they want to belong, and how their names should be. ii Acknowledgments Thank you very, very much to this study’s participants. This study also intended to discover the predictive relationship between the period of time that Arab/Moslem women stay in the USA, contact with American culture and people, contact with Arab culture and people, educational level, and acculturation. One hundred and two Arab/Moslem women were recruited through the Islamic organization in Columbus, Ohio. Non-probability data collection method (convenience sampling) was utilized. The participants responded to a questionnaire developed by the researcher. Descriptive statistics were used to answer the first research question (To what extent do Arab/Moslem women who live in Columbus, Ohio acculturate). Multiple regression analysis was conducted to answer the second research question (Can a model consisting of a linear combination of the period of time that Arab/Moslem women stay in the USA, contact with American culture and people, contact with Arab culture and people, and educational level predict the level of acculturation of the Arab/Moslem women living in Columbus, Ohio?). -

In this short essay, only a very concise and (personally) selective presentation of the current debate and the rich literature on this subject is possible. In fact, multicultural discussions refer to a wide variety of situations – integration policies and welfare-state regimes, the legal and political accommodation of cultural diversity, the management of immigration and national borders, the recognition and respect of cultural/religious difference, living with ‘difference’ in daily contexts, the ideological representation of identities, cultures and ‘the good society’, to name only a few. -

The Relevance for Science of Western and Eastern Cultures Daniel Memmi UQAM Montreal, QC, Canada [email protected] Abstract: The rise of modern science took place in Western Europe, and one may ask why this was the case. We analyze the roots of modern science by replacing scientific ideas within the framework of Western culture, notably the twin heritage of biblical thought and Greek philosophy. We also investigate Eastern (mostly Chinese) traditions so as to highlight Western beliefs by comparison, and to argue for their relevance to contemporary science. Classical Western conceptions that fostered the rise of science are now largely obsolete, and Eastern thought might be a source of new insights. Keywords: Science, Culture, Modern science, Western culture, Eastern culture, West, East 1 Introduction Science was not born in a vacuum, but in a specific society and culture at a particular time of history. Modern science arose in Western Europe during the Renaissance and developed mostly in Europe before becoming a worldwide pursuit in the 20th century. Why did modern science originate in Western Europe and not elsewhere? Other civilizations had reached a high level of theoretical knowledge (notably in astronomy and mathematics) and could boast of impressive technical achievements. Chinese, Indian and Islamic cultures come to mind for recent times, and Greek civilization in Antiquity had elaborated important scientific 1 concepts and theories. But all these early efforts stopped short of the systematic development of modern science, which happened only in Europe. We will contend that European culture, derived mainly from the Bible and Greek philosophy, presented the perfect mix of beliefs to make modern science possible. -

1 Introduction First Caribbean Days in Canada I play cricket for de telephone company in Barbados. It was June of 1975. I went to dis one game up in St. Andrews village and everyt’ing set for me to leave for Canada de following day. And I remember, like it yesterday, as I walkin’ off de fiel’ one of de guys on my team come runnin’ and literally dive at my feet. I had a pair of Gary Sobers boots dat my father brought me from Englan’, see? Dey had de autograph on de side, you know? Dey were pretty new and it hadn’t really occurred to me what I would do wit’ dem when I was leaving, but dis fella, boy, he knew! He dive at me and tek me off me feet. He strip dose boots off me quick fas’ and say “You’re not going to need these where you’re going!” and run away. Well, dat’s what I thought too. I thought, well you know, it’s not likely I play cricket in Canada and I’m not going for life, anyway. I plan to come here for five years and further my education, make some money and den head back. I thought, I’ll get dose boots back soon enough. So I walk de rest of de way home in my bare feet. Den, t’ree weeks later I in my sister’s front room. De doorbell ring an’ I look out de window an’ see dis man dress all in white. I thought, wow, in Canada de bakers deliver de bread! Den I see he don’t have no bread. -
Popular Culture, Media, and Globalization
CHAPTER 11 Popular Culture, Media, and Globalization distribute Globalization, propelled by advances in communication and transportation technology, the integration of global markets, and the privatization and deregulation of media outlets in much of the world, has intensified the role of media and popularor culture in shaping our communication with and understanding of cultures different from our own. While TV programs, celebrities, and music videos are often perceived as simply innocent and fun entertainment, these and other forms of popular culture are powerful transmitters of cultural norms, values, and expectations. While the United States continues to dominate production and dissemination of popular culture globally, numerous media circuits today originate from India, Latin America, Nigeria, and China; thus, a central dynamic of inter- cultural communication is how global mediapost, and distribution of popular culture alternately promote strong desires for inclusion in global culture and also mobilize intense resistance to cultural imperialism. Media and popular culture serve as primary channels through which we learn about groups who are different from ourselves and make sense of who we are. As the authors in this chapter assert, the stories we are exposed to shape who we are, how we live in the world, and what we dream is possible. Just as limited and negative representations pro- duced through media and pop culture promote and reinforce stereotypes impacting per- ceptions of otherscopy, and ourselves, diasporic and migrant communities reconnect and remember home through popular culture as they resist full assimilation and otherness. In Sheena Malhotra’s longitudinal study of the impact of media and neoliberalism on youth in India, she asks how global and intercultural fluency gained through exposure to Westernnot media impacts youth’s worldviews.
