From the Black Lives Matter movement, to the ongoing debate on societal issues like gun control and immigration, to the “reality television” dynamics of the 2016 Presidential race, the manner in which news is gathered and reported continues to change before our very eyes. Satisfying the insatiable appetite and never ending curiosity of today’s consumers while tackling tough issues with journalistic integrity is a constant challenge faced by the media.

2:30PM-3:30PM Sponsored by Business Solutions BINGE ON! STREAMING’S IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF TV Julliard Complex, 5th Floor With the dawn of on-demand portals like Xfinity TV, Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now, streaming has ushered in an era that has broken down the traditional barriers for television. Positive change has occurred as it has brought a more multi- cultural and diverse landscape for viewers. Despite more people turning to streaming services with the emergence of OTT devices, mobile apps and Smart TVs; studies have shown people are watching more television than they ever have. Which has led to a steady mixing of conventional and non-conventional viewing; in addition to reaching under- served audiences that are seeking a larger variety of content. How will traditional cable providers continue to coexist with streaming services? How does this affect advertising buying shifts?

Content & Imagery THE CASE OF THE SAN ANTONIO FOUR - HOW STORYTELLING SAVES LGBTQ LIVES Lyceum Complex, 6th Floor

Do we as an industry effectively create and share LGBTQ stories and content with our viewers? How do we, as an industry, promote LGBTQ equality? Through the lens of the critically acclaimed film, SOUTHWEST OF SALEM: THE STORY OF THE SAN ANTONIO FOUR, this panel will discuss how the industry can work harder and smarter to amplify LGBTQ voices in storytelling. Lauded at Tribeca, Hot Docs, and AFI Film Festivals, SOUTHWEST OF SALEM tells the story of four Latina lesbians who were wrongfully convicted of aggravated sexual assault and indecency against two young girls in San Antonio, TX more than 20 years ago. In 2012 and 2013, after one of the accusers recanted and the forensic evidence used in the trial was debunked, Elizabeth Ramirez, Anna Vasquez, Kristie Mayhugh and Cassandra Rivera were released from prison … but they are still without freedom. Waging an ongoing fight for their exoneration, SOUTHWEST OF SALEM follows documentarian Deborah S. Esquenazi as she captures the nightmarish persecution and devastating impact on the “San Antonio Four” and their families. Investigation Discovery will air the world television premiere of SOUTHWEST OF SALEM exclusively under its independent documentary strand films banner, ID FILMS, on Saturday, October 15 from 8-10 PM ET.

Leading & Learning NEGOTIATING THE CAREER HIGH BEAM IN TIMES OF CHANGE Majestic Complex, 6h floor The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “You never step into the same river twice.” The same wisdom may well be applied to the media and entertainment industry: “You never step into the same industry twice!” New technolo- gies, new cultural voices, new arrangement of the players on the competitive chessboard: Change is THE con- stant! The question many of us confront (and with an increasing frequency) is: How do I stay focused, productive, and strategic while dealing with the unpredictability of Change?

Majestic Complex, 6th floor It should come as no surprise that given the richly diverse and increasingly global nature of the media and enter- tainment industry workforce and customer base, companies lacking strong Diversity and Inclusion infrastructure and the competencies that must accompany it are at risk:

The 2015 joint Workforce Diversity research revealed that companies continue to experience measurable dis- parities in the career paths of people of color and women as compared to their white male counterparts. Much has been attempted to address the gaps; much has not succeeded. Here, perhaps, is the catch: According to noted author, researcher and academic Dan Heath, while “63% of people will remember a story from a talk or presentation, only 5% will remember statistics.” This workshop will explore the unique power of Storytelling as an authentic, compelling tool to examine untapped resource in the recruitment, development, and retention of culturally diverse talent.
