In 1981, Chv&tal defined the class of perfectly orderable graphs. This class of perfect graphs contains the comparability graphs. In this paper, we introduce a new class of perfectly orderable graphs, the &comparability graphs. This class generalizes comparability graphs in a natural way. We also prove a decomposition theorem which leads to a structural characteriza- tion of &comparability graphs. Using this characterization, we develop a polynomial-time recognition algorithm and polynomial-time algorithms for the clique and colouring problems for &comparability graphs. 1. Introduction A natural way to color the vertices of a graph is to put them in some order v*cv~<” l < v, and then assign colors in the following manner: (1) Consider the vertxes sequentially (in the sequence given by the order) (2) Assign to each Vi the smallest color (positive integer) not used on any neighbor vi of Vi with j c i. We shall call this the greedy coloring algorithm. An order < of a graph G is perfect if for each subgraph H of G, the greedy algorithm applied to H, gives an optimal coloring of H. An obstruction in a ordered graph (G, <) is a set of four vertices {a, b, c, d} with edges ab, bc, cd (and no other edge) and a c b, d CC. Clearly, if < is a perfect order on G, then (G, C) contains no obstruction (because the chromatic number of an obstruction is twu, but the greedy coloring algorithm uses three colors). -

We prove that proper interval graphs with ~> 2 vertices have hamiltonian paths, those with ~>3 vertices have hamiltonian cycles, and those with />4 vertices are hamiltonian-connected if and only if they are, respectively, 1-, 2-, or 3-connected. We also study the guard problem in spiral polygons by connecting the class of nontrivial connected proper interval graphs with the class of stick-intersection graphs of spiral polygons. Keywords." Introduction The main purpose of this paper is to study the hamiltonicity of proper interval graphs with applications to the guard problem in spiral polygons. Our terminology and graph notation are standard, see [2], except as indicated. The intersection graph of a family ~ of nonempty sets is derived by representing each set in ~ with a vertex and connecting two vertices with an edge if and only if their corresponding sets intersect. An interval graph is the intersection graph G of a family J of intervals on a real line. J is usually called the interval model for G. A proper interval graph is an interval graph with an interval model ~¢ such that no interval in J properly contains another. -

On Computing Longest Paths in Small Graph Classes Ryuhei Uehara∗ Yushi Uno† July 28, 2005 Abstract The longest path problem is to find a longest path in a given graph. While the graph classes in which the Hamiltonian path problem can be solved efficiently are widely investigated, few graph classes are known to be solved efficiently for the longest path problem. For a tree, a simple linear time algorithm for the longest path problem is known. We first generalize the algorithm, and show that the longest path problem can be solved efficiently for weighted trees, block graphs, and cacti. We next show that the longest path problem can be solved efficiently on some graph classes that have natural interval representations. Keywords: efficient algorithms, graph classes, longest path problem. 1 Introduction The Hamiltonian path problem is one of the most well known NP-hard problem, and there are numerous applications of the problems [17]. For such an intractable problem, there are two major approaches; approximation algorithms [20, 2, 35] and algorithms with parameterized complexity analyses [15]. In both approaches, we have to change the decision problem to the optimization problem. Therefore the longest path problem is one of the basic problems from the viewpoint of combinatorial optimization. From the practical point of view, it is also very natural approach to try to find a longest path in a given graph, even if it does not have a Hamiltonian path. However, finding a longest path seems to be more difficult than determining whether the given graph has a Hamiltonian path or not. -

A graph G is said to have a p-regular k-clique cover if there is a p-regular family H of k-cliques of G such that each edge of G belongs to a clique in H. Such a p-regular k- clique cover is separable if the complete subgraphs of order p that arise as intersections of pairs of distinct cliques of H are mutually vertex-disjoint. For any given integers p, k, ; p<k, we present bounds on the smallest order of a graph that has a p-regular k-clique cover with exactly cliques, and we describe all graphs that have p-regular separable k-clique covers with cliques. 1 Introduction An orthogonal double cover of a complete graph Kn by a graph H is a collection H of spanning subgraphs of Kn, all isomorphic to H, such that each edge of Kn is contained in exactly two subgraphs in H and any two distinct subgraphs in H share exactly one edge. -
A Class of Hypergraphs That Generalizes Chordal Graphs
MATH. SCAND. 106 (2010), 50–66 A CLASS OF HYPERGRAPHS THAT GENERALIZES CHORDAL GRAPHS ERIC EMTANDER Abstract In this paper we introduce a class of hypergraphs that we call chordal. We also extend the definition of triangulated hypergraphs, given by H. T. Hà and A. Van Tuyl, so that a triangulated hypergraph, according to our definition, is a natural generalization of a chordal (rigid circuit) graph. R. Fröberg has showed that the chordal graphs corresponds to graph algebras, R/I(G), with linear resolu- tions. We extend Fröberg’s method and show that the hypergraph algebras of generalized chordal hypergraphs, a class of hypergraphs that includes the chordal hypergraphs, have linear resolutions. The definitions we give, yield a natural higher dimensional version of the well known flag property of simplicial complexes. We obtain what we call d-flag complexes. 1. The elements of X and E , respectively, are called the vertices and the edges, respectively, of the hypergraph. If we want to specify what hypergraph we consider, we may write X (H ) and E (H ) for the vertices and edges respectively. A hypergraph is called simple if: (1) |Ei |≥2 for all i = 1,...,s and (2) Ej ⊆ Ei only if i = j. If the cardinality of X is n we often just use the set [n] ={1, 2,...,n} instead of X . Improved Ramsey-type results in comparability graphs D´anielKor´andi ∗ Istv´anTomon ∗ Abstract Several discrete geometry problems are equivalent to estimating the size of the largest homogeneous sets in graphs that happen to be the union of few comparability graphs. An important observation for such results is that if G is an n-vertex graph that is the union of r comparability (or more generally, perfect) graphs, then either G or its complement contains a clique of size n1=(r+1). This bound is known to be tight for r = 1. The question whether it is optimal for r ≥ 2 was studied by Dumitrescu and T´oth.We prove that it is essentially best possible for r = 2, as well: we introduce a probabilistic construction of two comparability graphs on n vertices, whose union contains no clique or independent set of size n1=3+o(1). Using similar ideas, we can also construct a graph G that is the union of r comparability graphs, and neither G, nor its complement contains a complete bipartite graph with parts of size cn (log n)r . With this, we improve a result of Fox and Pach. 1 Introduction An old problem of Larman, Matouˇsek,Pach and T¨or}ocsik[11, 14] asks for the largest m = m(n) such that among any n convex sets in the plane, there are m that are pairwise disjoint or m that pairwise intersect. Considering the disjointness graph G, whose vertices correspond to the convex sets and edges correspond to disjoint pairs, this problem asks the Ramsey-type question of estimating the largest clique or independent set in G. -

E-mail: [email protected]. Abstract. In this paper, we study the sub-coloring and hypo-coloring problems on interval graphs. These problems have applications in job scheduling and distributed computing and can be used as “subroutines” for other combinatorial optimization problems. In the sub-coloring problem, given a graph G, we want to partition the vertices of G into minimum number of sub-color classes, where each sub-color class induces a union of disjoint cliques in G. In the hypo-coloring problem, given a graph G, and integral weights on vertices, we want to find a partition of the vertices of G into sub-color classes such that the sum of the weights of the heaviest cliques in each sub-color class is minimized. We present a “forbidden subgraph” characterization of graphs with sub-chromatic number k and use this to derive a a 3-approximation algorithm for sub-coloring interval graphs. For the hypo-coloring problem on interval graphs, we first show that it is NP-complete and then via reduction to the max-coloring problem, show how to obtain an O(log n)-approximation algorithm for it. 1 Introduction Given a graph G = (V, E), a k-sub-coloring of G is a partition of V into sub-color classes V1,V2,...,Vk; a subset Vi ⊆ V is called a sub-color class if it induces a union of disjoint cliques in G.
