Preface These notes (which are work in progress and will remain so for the foreseeable fu- ture) are meant as an introduction to combinatorics – the mathematical discipline that studies finite sets (roughly speaking). When finished, they will cover topics such as binomial coefficients, the principles of enumeration, permutations, parti- tions and graphs. The emphasis falls on enumerative combinatorics, meaning the art of computing sizes of finite sets (“counting”), and graph theory. I have tried to keep the presentation as self-contained and elementary as possible. The reader is assumed to be familiar with some basics such as induction proofs, equivalence relations and summation signs, as well as have some experience with mathematical proofs. One of the best places to catch up on these basics and to gain said experience is the MIT lecture notes [LeLeMe16] (particularly their first five chapters). Two other resources to familiarize oneself with proofs are [Hammac15] and [Day16]. Generally, most good books about “reading and writing mathemat- ics” or “introductions to abstract mathematics” should convey these skills, although the extent to which they actually do so may differ. These notes are accompanying two classes on combinatorics (Math 4707 and 4990) I am giving at the University of Minneapolis in Fall 2017. On Treewidth and Graph Minors Daniel John Harvey Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2014 Department of Mathematics and Statistics The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ii Abstract Both treewidth and the Hadwiger number are key graph parameters in structural and al- gorithmic graph theory, especially in the theory of graph minors. For example, treewidth demarcates the two major cases of the Robertson and Seymour proof of Wagner's Con- jecture. Also, the Hadwiger number is the key measure of the structural complexity of a graph. In this thesis, we shall investigate these parameters on some interesting classes of graphs. The treewidth of a graph defines, in some sense, how \tree-like" the graph is. Treewidth is a key parameter in the algorithmic field of fixed-parameter tractability. In particular, on classes of bounded treewidth, certain NP-Hard problems can be solved in polynomial time. In structural graph theory, treewidth is of key interest due to its part in the stronger form of Robertson and Seymour's Graph Minor Structure Theorem. A key fact is that the treewidth of a graph is tied to the size of its largest grid minor. In fact, treewidth is tied to a large number of other graph structural parameters, which this thesis thoroughly investigates. In doing so, some of the tying functions between these results are improved. This thesis also determines exactly the treewidth of the line graph of a complete graph. This is a critical example in a recent paper of Marx, and improves on a recent result by Grohe and Marx. -

Irregular computations on unstructured data are an impor- tant class of problems for parallel programming. Graph coloring is often an important preprocessing step, e.g. as a way to perform dependency analysis for safe parallel execution. The total run time of a coloring algo- rithm adds to the overall parallel overhead of the application whereas the number of colors used determines the amount of exposed parallelism. A fast and scalable coloring algorithm using as few colors as possible is vi- tal for the overall parallel performance and scalability of many irregular applications that depend upon runtime dependency analysis. C¸ataly¨ureket al. have proposed a graph coloring algorithm which relies on speculative, local assignment of colors. In this paper we present an improved version which runs even more optimistically with less thread synchronization and reduced number of conflicts compared to C¸ataly¨urek et al.'s algorithm. We show that the new technique scales better on multi- core and many-core systems and performs up to 1.5x faster than its pre- decessor on graphs with high-degree vertices, while keeping the number of colors at the same near-optimal levels. In 1981, Chv&tal defined the class of perfectly orderable graphs. This class of perfect graphs contains the comparability graphs. In this paper, we introduce a new class of perfectly orderable graphs, the &comparability graphs. This class generalizes comparability graphs in a natural way. We also prove a decomposition theorem which leads to a structural characteriza- tion of &comparability graphs. Using this characterization, we develop a polynomial-time recognition algorithm and polynomial-time algorithms for the clique and colouring problems for &comparability graphs. 1. Introduction A natural way to color the vertices of a graph is to put them in some order v*cv~<” l < v, and then assign colors in the following manner: (1) Consider the vertxes sequentially (in the sequence given by the order) (2) Assign to each Vi the smallest color (positive integer) not used on any neighbor vi of Vi with j c i. We shall call this the greedy coloring algorithm. An order < of a graph G is perfect if for each subgraph H of G, the greedy algorithm applied to H, gives an optimal coloring of H. An obstruction in a ordered graph (G, <) is a set of four vertices {a, b, c, d} with edges ab, bc, cd (and no other edge) and a c b, d CC. Clearly, if < is a perfect order on G, then (G, C) contains no obstruction (because the chromatic number of an obstruction is twu, but the greedy coloring algorithm uses three colors). -

RANDOM COGRAPHS: BROWNIAN GRAPHON LIMIT AND ASYMPTOTIC DEGREE DISTRIBUTION FRÉDÉRIQUE BASSINO, MATHILDE BOUVEL, VALENTIN FÉRAY, LUCAS GERIN, MICKAËL MAAZOUN, AND ADELINE PIERROT ABSTRACT. We consider uniform random cographs (either labeled or unlabeled) of large size. Our first main result is the convergence towards a Brownian limiting object in the space of graphons. We then show that the degree of a uniform random vertex in a uniform cograph is of order n, and converges after normalization to the Lebesgue measure on [0; 1]. We finally an- alyze the vertex connectivity (i.e. the minimal number of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph) of random connected cographs, and show that this statistics converges in distribution without renormalization. Unlike for the graphon limit and for the degree of a random vertex, the limiting distribution of the vertex connectivity is different in the labeled and unlabeled settings. Our proofs rely on the classical encoding of cographs via cotrees. We then use mainly combi- natorial arguments, including the symbolic method and singularity analysis. 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. Motivation. Random graphs are arguably the most studied objects at the interface of com- binatorics and probability theory. One aspect of their study consists in analyzing a uniform random graph of large size n in a prescribed family, e.g. perfect graphs [MY19], planar graphs [Noy14], graphs embeddable in a surface of given genus [DKS17], graphs in subcritical classes [PSW16], hereditary classes [HJS18] or addable classes [MSW06, CP19]. A necessary condition for a graph class to have bounded treewidth is the absence of large cliques. We study graph classes closed under taking induced subgraphs in which this condition is also sufficient, which we call (tw,ω)-bounded. Such graph classes are known to have useful algorithmic applications related to variants of the clique and k-coloring problems. We consider six well-known graph containment relations: the minor, topological minor, subgraph, induced minor, in- duced topological minor, and induced subgraph relations. For each of them, we give a complete characterization of the graphs H for which the class of graphs excluding H is (tw,ω)-bounded. Our results yield an infinite family of χ-bounded induced-minor-closed graph classes and imply that the class of 1-perfectly orientable graphs is (tw,ω)-bounded, leading to linear-time algorithms for k-coloring 1-perfectly orientable graphs for every fixed k. This answers a question of Breˇsar, Hartinger, Kos, and Milaniˇc from 2018, and one of Beisegel, Chudnovsky, Gurvich, Milaniˇc, and Servatius from 2019, respectively. We also reveal some further algorithmic implications of (tw,ω)- boundedness related to list k-coloring and clique problems. In addition, we propose a question about the complexity of the Maximum Weight Independent Set prob- lem in (tw,ω)-bounded graph classes and prove that the problem is polynomial-time solvable in every class of graphs excluding a fixed star as an induced minor. -
A Class of Hypergraphs That Generalizes Chordal Graphs

We also extend the definition of triangulated hypergraphs, given by H. T. Hà and A. Van Tuyl, so that a triangulated hypergraph, according to our definition, is a natural generalization of a chordal (rigid circuit) graph. R. Fröberg has showed that the chordal graphs corresponds to graph algebras, R/I(G), with linear resolu- tions. We extend Fröberg’s method and show that the hypergraph algebras of generalized chordal hypergraphs, a class of hypergraphs that includes the chordal hypergraphs, have linear resolutions. The definitions we give, yield a natural higher dimensional version of the well known flag property of simplicial complexes. We obtain what we call d-flag complexes. 1. We initiate the study of structural parameterizations of the Clique Coloring problem which asks whether a given graph has a clique coloring with q colors. For fixed q ≥ 2, we give an O?(qtw)-time algorithm when the input graph is given together with one of its tree decompositions of width tw. We complement this result with a matching lower bound under the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis.
