  • The Transition of Samsung Electronics Through Its M&A with Harman
Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity Article The Transition of Samsung Electronics through Its M&A with Harman International Jung hyun Kim 1, Monica Young-Shin Chun 2, Duong Thi Hong Nhung 1 and Jeonghwan Lee 1,* 1 Department of International Business and Trade, Myongji University, Seoul 03674, Korea 2 Department of International Business, Seoul National University, Seoul 08826, Korea * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +82-2-300-0792 Received: 24 June 2019; Accepted: 30 July 2019; Published: 5 August 2019 Abstract: The automobile industry is experiencing unprecedented change. Despite its century-old history based mostly in the art of mechanics, increased development of technology and heightened awareness of environmental issues has pushed traditional automobile manufacturers to completely re-examine their strategies. It has also newly invited nontraditional players such as electronic and IT tycoons namely, Samsung, Google, and Apple into the game. The advent of electric cars with cutting edge technology requires active participation and collaboration from diverse industries requiring cross-over joint ventures and M&As. In this light, the recent acquisition of Harman Incorporated for eight billion dollars by Samsung Electronics in 2016 is a significant event that signals great change. As the electronics tycoon expands its boundaries preparing to become an important player in the automobile industry, this study examines how Samsung increases and integrates its knowledge base and innovation capability through the M&A deal with Harman in attempts to enhance its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving automotive market. Keywords: open innovation; M&A; automobile industry; autonomous driving; electric cars; post-merger integration 1.

  • Consumer Iot: Understanding the Contemporary Use of Vulnerability Disclosure - 2020 Progress Report INTRODUCTION
Consumer IoT: Understanding the Contemporary Use of Vulnerability Disclosure - 2020 Progress Report INTRODUCTION Providing security researchers of Internet of Things (IoT) devices with a straightforward and consistent method for reporting vulnerabilities to manufacturers is a key element in raising the bar on security. At the same time, it’s important for companies to make it clear how they will respond once vulnerabilities have been identified and to set expectations on the timescale for software patches, hardware fixes or other forms of remediation. This essential information forms the basis of a vulnerability disclosure policy and its implementation has the potential to deliver major security benefits, particularly in a general increase in ‘cyber hygiene’ within the IoT ecosystem. A number of industry bodies and governments across the world agree on the importance of the practice and recommend implementing vulnerability disclosure policies1. This practice also positively impacts the related themes of safety and privacy. In 2018, the IoT Security Foundation (IoTSF) commissioned Copper Horse to conduct primary research to give a snapshot of vulnerability disclosure practice in consumer companies providing connected products. The results of the study made for dramatic reading as data showed less than 10% of consumer IoT companies follow vulnerability disclosure guidelines2. While not exhaustive, the list of over 300 companies analysed, offering IoT products ranging from security robots to bed bug monitors, can be considered a practical gauge of use within the global industry. To determine how the reporting landscape has developed “one year on”, the same product websites have been revisited in new research. This study also examines how widely adopted ‘security.txt’ is amongst IoT companies.

  • Samsung and TBS: a Smarter Way of Working
TBS CASE STUDY Samsung and TBS: a smarter way of working TBS are specialists in mobilising legacy IT systems; creating solutions that empower employees to work more effectively in the field. They’ve been deploying scalable, secure mobile workforce management solutions for more than 22 years. But in 2014, TBS reached a crossroad. A number of other companies were bringing similar solutions to the market, so TBS decided that to stand out from the crowd and continue to offer businesses smarter ways of working, they needed to develop new products that worked seamlessly with innovative technology to unlock business potential. A breath of fresh air TBS wanted to innovate and create new and better mobile solutions for businesses, so they engaged with Samsung to see what could be achieved. Wearable technology was seen as something that could transform the way field workers operate day to day. The Gear watch was an interesting proposition for TBS. It provided a hands-free solution which, unlike other devices, could work independently without the need to pair it with a separate smartphone. Plus, the Tizen operating system worked smoothly and the watch wasn’t as clunky as others available at the time. After good early success with businesses using the Gear watch, TBS became a Samsung partner and we started looking into smartphone and tablet solutions too. Working across a wide range of industries from utilities and energy to retail and transport, TBS have come up with multiple workforce solutions that perform best on Samsung devices. In the logistics sector, TBS have been able to help businesses save money and work faster with an easy-to-use barcode scanning solution.
