The artwork was brilliant, Batman Eye of the Beholder the story was definitely a filler while they were waiting for Bruce Wayne to take over the book series again. Apr 17, Sud rated it liked it Shelves: comics. A fairly decent Batman comic, considering it comes from the time when Batman Inc was a thing. Batman, though Dick Grayson not Bruce, faces off against a master assassin who seeks a mask of great power. The art is actually pretty good throughout, the story is decent enough as well. The drawbacks are the utterly ridiculous female knock-off characters. Even Damien ironically says "What's with all these female costumed characters in Gotham? A hack is one who takes established characters and then, without much creativity, changes their sexual orientation, gender, race, etc to create a new, shitty and completely unecessay derivative character. Yeah I mean Enigma Riddlers daughter. I just don't have much use for SJW hackery. There is another smaller story, after the Sensei story ends. This has to do with Two-Face and Batman Eye of the Beholder hunt for Batman Eye of the Beholder missing coin. It also involves his supposedly dead wife. Not too bad a story. So the overall quality deserves a 3 star-it was a good comic, though hardly anything to rave about. Less of the hack-job characters and this would have been a pretty good Batman tale. Oct 26, JB rated it really liked it Shelves: my-dc-collection. This was a really enjoyable story! Even more so, if you have read stories like the Resurrection of Ra's al Ghul. A villain Sensei who has at least for me his first introduction in that story makes a return here in the Eye of the Beholder, as does an ally I-Ching. Bruce is working on Batman Incorporated behind the curtains, while Dick and Damian are keeping the streets of Gotham Batman Eye of the Beholder This was a really enjoyable story! Bruce is working on Batman Incorporated behind the curtains, while Dick and Damian are keeping the streets of Gotham safe as Batman and Robin. This story was heavy on the use of sidekicks. Not a tough one to crack is it. I loved the art! Tony S. Daniel is one of my favorite Batman artists! As I said before, it's great to see some familiar characters make their return. It's fun to see some characters and storylines being revisited and fleshed out, but you can rest assure that you can enjoy this book even if you haven't read these other Bat-stories. Still for me it was a definite plus, I always like it when writers use Batman's elaborate history in new stories. A lot of action, great Batman Eye of the Beholder, great characters, interesting stories, just everything you would want out of a Bat-story. Dec 19, Sam Quixote rated it liked it. Overall, a fun Batman book but not essential reading. Nov 23, Aaron rated it it was ok. What starts with a great setup quickly devolves into a standard too-many-characters parade. I think Tony Daniel's problem may be that he loves Batman too much, odd as that seems. So far all of his stories have been absolutely crammed full of secondary Batman characters in a completely useless and haphazard way, nothing like Hush or one of the stories that does the rogues gallery thing right. It's just an excuse to have a lot of mysticism and kung fu, and ultimately doesn't pay off. The story centers around Sensei literally this guy's name trying to find an ancient mask of power hidden somewhere in Gotham. Dozens of plot threads are set up, and none of them pay off. It's compelling until it falls apart, and has the added bonus of Daniel's solid art. Batman Eye of the Beholder second half is devoted to Two-Face in a story that is only a callback to The Long Halloween and, I guess, some other stuff that happened in the Batman universe that I wasn't aware of. I found myself completely lost beginning to end. No character motivation or plot twist made any sense to me. This is one of the biggest things wrong with comics today: writers assuming everyone has read everything they have. I missed a couple Batman stories actually very few, I've read pretty much everything since Hush somewhere and so I'm lost, since Daniel didn't bother to explain himself. A massive waste of time brought even further down by lackluster art. Jul 14, Blindzider rated it it was ok Shelves: comics. I had a harder time with this one than the last one. Just could not keep interested and had to force myself to finish it. It isn't terrible but the dialogue is cliched, the plot devices are cliched, even in the dialogue one of the characters mentions everything being cliched. The change to Catwoman in the last volume is repeated here with another villain and that's pretty much when I decided enough was enough. The art is still pretty good. Seems there are a variety of inkers this time on Daniels' I had a harder time with this one than the last one. This text can also be interpreted as the commencement of, and subsequent intense interest in the way superhero characters often portray a ‘camp’ sensibility (Medhurst, 1991) representative of a queer performative identity (Butler, 1993).

Chapter 5 History Left Unsaid: Implied Continuity in Batman’s Contemporary Comic-Book Narratives Anthony N. Smith In 2011, DC comics significantly revamped its large line of comic books, resetting the issue numbering of long-enduring superhero titles and streamlining the narrative continuity – the inter-connected backstory – that the characters had accumulated and shared over decades.1 The new line – dubbed ‘The New 52’ – was intended in part to attract new readers to the DC universe.2 As the company’s Co-Publisher (and fan- favourite artist) Jim Lee explained, the line’s high issue numbers (Detective Comics had reached #881 prior to the reset) and complicated character biographies ‘made the world of comic books a little more daunting to jump into’. The changes, the company hoped, would enable ‘new readers’ to ‘jump in and understand what’s going on from the very first issue’.3 The Batman backstory, however, was exempted from the simplification process that DC’s wider narrative universe underwent.4 As Batman writer Scott Snyder stressed shortly after the comic-book line reboot, in contrast to the likes of Superman, many of the significant events that the Caped Crusader had experienced within the prior universe would remain part of DC’s newly-created continuity.

  • Graphic Novels Using Dublin Core
Mini-Metadata Project: Graphic Novels Using Dublin Core Stephanie Felice San Jose State University July 13, 2017 Introduction During this project, I generate records for a selection of graphic novels and comic books using the Dublin Core schema. Due to their dual focus on textual and visual elements, graphic novels pose unique cataloging challenges. Although Dublin Core can be used to describe both text-based and visual objects, it is generally not regarded as the optimal choice for graphic novels. In an attempt to better describe graphic novels, both user-created and institution-created schemas have been developed in the past fifteen years. I will examine how Dublin Core captures and does not capture the peculiarities present in graphic novels and comic books. The intended environment for this project is a library with a standalone graphic novel collection or a graphic novel collection in a special collections setting. The targeted user groups are graphic novel readers and graphic novel scholars. In real-world settings, this specialized user group and environment has a higher metadata need than the general public. In this paper I will describe graphic novel metadata, explain my schema choice, provide a link to my metadata generator, include ten generated item records and discuss my experiences using DC for graphic novels. Graphic novel metadata Graphic novels can be described as ‘juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or produce an aesthetic response in the reader,’ or more succinctly as ‘sequential art’ (McCloud, 1993, pp. 27). These definitions reflect competing emphases on text and art, depending on the narrative’s requirements.

  • Superheroes and Shamanism: Magic and Participation in the Comics of Grant Morrison
SUPERHEROES AND SHAMANISM: MAGIC AND PARTICIPATION IN THE COMICS OF GRANT MORRISON Timothy Bavlnka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2011 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Dr. Esther Clinton © 2011 Timothy Bavlnka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Comic creator Grant Morrison is an adamant practitioner of magic, and in particular, the creation of sigils. A sigil is the infusion of abstract symbols with the goal to make manifest the creator’s particular desire. This thesis will discuss how Grant Morrison infuses his writing with his particular beliefs in an attempt to bridge the gap between fictional stories and reality. Morrison openly discusses the shamanic events in his life and writes about superheroes undertaking similar metaphysical journeys. As Morrison’s magic and the medium of comics allow the reader to become more easily “lost” within a fictional world, the relationship of fiction and the reader becomes increasingly malleable. This relationship of fiction and reality may seem abstract, but the comics support the connection by including the concept of textualization – where the reader associates himself or herself with the protagonist, becoming part of the narrative. The post-structural nature of Morrison’s work allows for a unique relationship between the author, diegetic worlds and readers. The stories become participatory events, engaging the reader and the comic community. Readers participate with his texts on extremely personal and intricate levels, and through their group analysis, they discover new interpretations and secrets within the comic panels.
