M. DeMATTEIS è legato indissolubilmente alle gestioni ragnesche degli anni ʿ90 grazie ai cicli di storie in coppia con Sal Buscema e Mark Bagley, cui si annoverano i capolavori "The Child Within ", "Best Of Enemies " e "The Gift ". Scrivendo di un Peter Parker più adulto e massiccio come mai sino ad allora, l'autore si era aggiudicato qualche anno prima il successo grazie alla tragica saga "Kraven's Last Hunt " mentre, poco dopo, sarà la volta della miniserie "The Lost Years ". Chapter 5 History Left Unsaid: Implied Continuity in Batman’s Contemporary Comic-Book Narratives Anthony N. Smith In 2011, DC comics significantly revamped its large line of comic books, resetting the issue numbering of long-enduring superhero titles and streamlining the narrative continuity – the inter-connected backstory – that the characters had accumulated and shared over decades.1 The new line – dubbed ‘The New 52’ – was intended in part to attract new readers to the DC universe.2 As the company’s Co-Publisher (and fan- favourite artist) Jim Lee explained, the line’s high issue numbers (Detective Comics had reached #881 prior to the reset) and complicated character biographies ‘made the world of comic books a little more daunting to jump into’. The changes, the company hoped, would enable ‘new readers’ to ‘jump in and understand what’s going on from the very first issue’.3 The Batman backstory, however, was exempted from the simplification process that DC’s wider narrative universe underwent.4 As Batman writer Scott Snyder stressed shortly after the comic-book line reboot, in contrast to the likes of Superman, many of the significant events that the Caped Crusader had experienced within the prior universe would remain part of DC’s newly-created continuity.

  • Graphic Novels Using Dublin Core
    Mini-Metadata Project: Graphic Novels Using Dublin Core Stephanie Felice San Jose State University July 13, 2017 Introduction During this project, I generate records for a selection of graphic novels and comic books using the Dublin Core schema. Due to their dual focus on textual and visual elements, graphic novels pose unique cataloging challenges. Although Dublin Core can be used to describe both text-based and visual objects, it is generally not regarded as the optimal choice for graphic novels. In an attempt to better describe graphic novels, both user-created and institution-created schemas have been developed in the past fifteen years. I will examine how Dublin Core captures and does not capture the peculiarities present in graphic novels and comic books. The intended environment for this project is a library with a standalone graphic novel collection or a graphic novel collection in a special collections setting. The targeted user groups are graphic novel readers and graphic novel scholars. In real-world settings, this specialized user group and environment has a higher metadata need than the general public. In this paper I will describe graphic novel metadata, explain my schema choice, provide a link to my metadata generator, include ten generated item records and discuss my experiences using DC for graphic novels. Graphic novel metadata Graphic novels can be described as ‘juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or produce an aesthetic response in the reader,’ or more succinctly as ‘sequential art’ (McCloud, 1993, pp. 27). These definitions reflect competing emphases on text and art, depending on the narrative’s requirements.
