The Holy See ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI TO THE METROPOLITAN ARCHBISHOPS WHO RECEIVED THE PALLIUM ON THE SOLEMNITY OF STS PETER AND PAULThursday, 30 June 2005 Dear and Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate,After yesterday's liturgical celebration on the Solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, it gives me great joy to meet you again this morning, together with your relatives and the faithful from your dioceses who have accompanied you on your pilgrimage to the tomb of the Prince of the Apostles to receive the Pallium. This ancient tradition, which dates back to the 11th century, is a significant confirmation of the communion of the Metropolitan Bishops with the Pastor of the Church in Rome. Indeed, you come from different nations and continents and are called to serve the one Church of Christ: I offer each of you my fraternal and cordial greeting. In the first place, I address Cardinal Angelo Sodano, on whom the Pallium has been conferred because he is the Dean of the College of Cardinals, and as I thank him for the many years he has collaborated with the Successor of Peter, my thoughts go to all the members of the College of Cardinals, with gratitude for their support and the prayers with which they accompany my service as Pastor of the universal Church.I greet Archbishop Bruno Forte of Chieti-Vasto, Archbishop Salvatore Nunnari of Cosenza, Archbishop Paolo Mario Atzei of Sassari. I also greet Archbishop Rrok Mirdita of Tiranë, Albania, and Archbishop Ruggero Franceschini of Izmir, Turkey.Dear Brothers, always take good care of Christ's flock that is entrusted to you.

To my mother, Azelma Dolores Chism, who, by her example, taught me to not wait until “didn’t.” (Don’t worry, you’ll read about “didn’t”), and not to ever, ever give up until you’ve won, or died trying. To my big brother-brother, Marcus Burnell Chism, aka, Yeshiah Ben Shaleak, who, by concrete example, taught me that nobody defines me, and nobody corrals me, because I’m “a man on the planet, unbound.” To my wife of 31 years, Morna, whose external life, every single nano- second, reflects her inner spiritual belief in, reliance upon, and love of The Divine and gives me a daily example to continue trying to emulate. Without her, I could do nothing. To Carl Ferrel, who taught me how “to chess.” To Leroy Hardy, aka, Chaka Ra, who, for many of us young “Black-consciousness” men of Chicago, back in the late 1960s, greatly extended my big brother’s man- on-the-planet perspective of self, and who refused to serve as an ear for excuses. To the awesome, tough-love, no-excuses-accepted, progressive Black community of pre-1960s America, which produced, all over the United States, strong independent Black institutions and economies, regardless of segregation.

  • Stand Fast by the Faith the “HOUSE of MARY”
INFORMATIVE BULLETIN OF THE PAPHOS LATIN PARISH August 2017 Stand fast by the faith THE “HOUSE OF MARY” Since Christianity was acknowledged to be of equal status to the pre-existing religions in the Roman Empire in 313 A.D. there has been in Ephesus a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Only in the 12c. , however, the tradition behind this church became widely known: “The Virgin Mary was settled in Ephesus with Saint John the Evangelist, and it was there that she ended her earthly life, i. e. the Dormition and Assumption of the Mother of God took place at her house near Ephesus”. All the above would have strictly remained in the domain of tradition if, in the 19th c. ,a nun called A. K. Emmerich had not repeatedly had visions in which the Virgin Mary would describe in detail the passion of the Lord as well as the place where lies her house near Ephesus (nowadays S.W. Turkey). In 1881 the French priest J. Gouyet, following the relevant instructions, discovered the remnants of a little house dating from the Apostolic Times. Many Popes have visited the place and imparted their Apostolic Blessing to it as a place of pilgrimage, although the Church has yet to officially express herself regarding the authenticity of this tradition. A. K. Emmerich has been beatified in 1975 by Saint Pope John-Paul II. Mosaic from Santa Maria Maggiore and The “house of Mary” 9km from the ancient city of Ephesus Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Sigebert of Gembloux, A Letter of the people of Liège Against Pope Paschal II, translated by W.L. North from the edition of E. Sackur in MGH Libelli de Lite, II, (Hannover, 1892), pp.449-464. This work was composed early in 1103 in response to the attack of Count Robert of Flanders on the city of Cambrai. To all men of goodwill, the Church of Liège who firmly holds to the truth of the faith and the catholic unity. i. In amazement and sorrow I exclaim with Isaiah, who cried out in a moment of exaltation: "Just as the winds from Africa, so, too, comes the burden of the deserted sea from the desert, from the horrible land. A harsh vision has been announced to me. He who does not believe, acts without faith; and he who destroys, lays waste." [Is.21:1-2] Whoever did not previously understand through reading what the "deserted sea" was, now understands by seeing what is meant by the deserted sea - not only Babylonia but also the world and the Church. For although the world and the Church abound with peoples just as the sea abounds with waves, they are nevertheless rightly called the deserted sea because the world seems bereft of the governance of wise princes, while the Church laments that she has been forsaken by the sound counsel of its leaders. Was there greater confusion long ago in Babylon than there is today in the Church? In Babylon the tongues of the nations were cast into disorder; in the Church, the tongues and minds of the faithful are divided.
