Dr. Eugene Braunwald, World- Renowned Cardiologist, to Speak at Miller School on April 18

Eugene Braunwald, M.D., a world-renowned cardiologist who is the recipient of 22 honorary doctorates and whose h-index of 208 has caused him to be named the most frequently cited author in by the journal Science Watch, will speak at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine on Wednesday, April 18.

p.m. at the Michael S. Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education, located on the ground floor of the Don Soffer Clinical Research Center. His presentation is sponsored by the Cardiovascular Division of the Miller School’s Department of Medicine. The lecture is open to the entire UM community and to the public.

Braunwald trained at School of Medicine and served his medical residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served as chief of cardiology and as clinical director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and founding chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. From 1972 to 1996 he was chairman of the Department of Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. From 1980 to 1989 he also served as chairman of the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital and Blumgart Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He was a founding trustee and chief academic officer of Partners HealthCare System.

Braunwald’s first major paper was published inCirculation Research in July 1954, and he has been a major force in cardiology since then. He was an editor ofHarrison's Principles of Internal Medicine for 12 editions, and the founding editor of Heart Disease, now in its 11th Edition, the most influential textbooks in their fields.

In addition to his honorary degrees, Braunwald has received many honors and awards, including the Distinguished Scientist and Lifetime Achievement Awards of the American College of Cardiology, Research Achievement and Herrick Awards of the American Heart Association, and the Gold Medal of the European Society of Cardiology. the Association of the European Society of Cardiology have established annual lectures in his name. Harvard University established the Eugene Braunwald endowed Chair in Medicine. Braunwald was the first adult cardiologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S. The living Nobel Prize winners in medicine voted him “the person who has contributed the most to cardiology in recent years.”
