We offer a continuum of care that is nationally accredited through the Council on Accreditation (COA) and achieve our mission by offering the following programs: Emergency Placement, Therapeutic Residential Foster Care, Pregnant and Parenting Teen Services, Healing for Survivors of Child Sex Trafficking, and Foster Care and Adoption Services and Community Outreach. THERAPEUTIC RESIDENTIAL FOSTER CARE PROGRAM This program houses 38 youth at any one time on a 10-acre ranch, and primarily focuses on teaching social skills, facilitating education and helping children deal with past issues and trauma through targeted therapeutic services as they live in homelike environments that model a functional family dynamic. Children who are admitted with psychiatric diagnoses and significant emotional and/or behavioral issues receive individual therapy more frequently than other youth in care to address their increased mental health needs. PREGNANT AND PARENTING TEENS PROGRAM AND EMERGENCY SHELTER SJRC Texas has responded to one of the greatest unmet needs for children—girls in the foster care system that are pregnant and/or parenting. This 24-bed program, added to our New Braunfels campus in 2009, gives these young mothers prenatal and birthing care to address health, wellness, structure and stability as they learn life skills, job skills and parenting skills. This location also serves as an Emergency Shelter – we meet the most basic and immediate needs of children in a crisis situation. They come with often just the clothes on their back, confused and scared not knowing what their future holds. We immediately ensure they are fed, clothed and receive any medical care they may be lacking. CHILD PLACING AGENCY The program, with offices located in San Antonio, consists of our Community Foster Care and Adoption Services. Our community of supporters is strong and vibrant, and together, we will continue our efforts to ensure that the children we care for truly feel healing and hope. We are looking forward to much more in Fiscal Year 2019!

Even Teenagers pray for a forever family to be there while they continue to SJRC Texas. Her father died when she was younger, and her mother suffered from severe depression to grow into adults! Most Foster families hope for a child to love and care for but it takes a special foster and a drug addiction. Casey spent most of her teenage years caring for her little brothers and sister. She parent, who wants to love and support a teen mother and her child in their home! knew that to keep her family together and keep CPS from getting involved she needed to make sure they were fed, clothed, and made it to school. When we asked Casey about this time in her life she told us that “her job was to be the mom because she knew that is what her siblings needed.”

As time passed, the children’s elementary school realized what the family dynamic actually looked like and called a report into the child abuse hotline. This was, as Casey put it, “the beginning of the end." Or so she thought. Because they were so much younger than Casey, her siblings were placed in a foster- to-adopt home and Casey went to an emergency shelter. As her siblings began to thrive, Casey began to deteriorate. Her whole world had crashed down and her role of being their caregiver was over. Casey was forced to leave three placements before she was finally sent to the psychiatric hospital after not wanting to leave her room for several days.

As their mother was unwilling to accept parental responsibility and later relinquished her rights to all four children, they were all legally available for adoption. This expedited the process for the three little siblings and they were officially adopted after being in the foster home for two years. Casey was once again alone. On a Tuesday night, SJRC staff welcomed Casey to her new home and introduced her to her roommate and the other kids and staff on campus. Casey was several years behind in school since her education was never a priority growing up. It was going to take a lot of work and patience from the staff and more importantly from Casey, but after only a few months, Casey is doing well in our charter school and finding her new normal at SJRC Texas. The turning point came when she was finally able to resume visits with her brothers and sister. Sadly, Casey knows that her life will never be the same, but she has said that if she can’t live with her siblings, then the next best thing is to be with us at SJRC Texas where the staff love her and treat her with respect. We will be there for Casey and cheer her on as she graduates high school next year and celebrate with her as she prepares to leave foster care. When asked about her future, Casey states “There is no way I would be graduating or preparing for adulthood without the help of the staff and SJRC Texas!”
