Pre-race days — Thirty area businessmen and farmers put down $100 apiece and articles of corporation for the track are drawn up. The group makes the investment after traveling to Columbus to take a look at the agricultural grounds in that city. By 1956, about 250 families have a financial interest in the grounds with over
$350,000 invested. Area cattle feeder Ray T. Baxter is the president of the association that also includes a 30- man board of directors.
April 1953 — A corporation known as the Hall County Livestock Improvement Association purchases 80 acres of land approximately one mile east of Stolley Park's road junction with Highway 281. An aerial photo titled
"Little Ak-Sar-Ben" shows 10 barns that are capable of holding more than 400 horses and a recently completed
Livestock Exhibition building. A paddock that will house veterinary officials and serve as a jockey quarters is planned. The grandstand will seat approximately 2,000 fans. North and south starting areas will be included on a 5/8-mile track. A 20-acre parking lot will also be part of the project.
September 1953 — The track announces it will break its maiden by hosting the Old Reliable Hereford Show and Sale in the livestock exhibition building. A 15-day horse racing season is scheduled to start on April 29 of the next year.
April 29, 1954 — Fonner Park holds its first day of racing. An estimated 3,000 fans show up on a cold, wet and windy day.
May 9, 1954 — Jockey Joe Rettele and his three sons ride in the same race.

1955 — Crowds average about 5,000 people each day for 18 days of live racing. Over 1,000 applications were received for stall space.
Jan. 5, 1956 — A new grandstand that can accommodate up to 3,000 fans is enclosed on the back and north sides. Twelve barns with a capacity of 40 horses or 80 cattle each are ready to be filled.
Nov. 1, 1957 — An $87,137 contract for glassing of the grandstand was awarded to Diamond Engineering
Company of Grand Island. The contract includes a new row of box seats. A second contract calls for a canopy that will adjoin the back of the plant to the grandstand to be built. The project is expected to cost $71,622.
"When these improvements are completed Grand Island will have the finest and most modern racing plant between Omaha and California and will be the only glass-enclosed plant in the central United States," then- general manager Al Swihart said.
4 Dec. 17, 1959 — August L. "Gus" Fonner, for whom Fonner Park is named, dies at age 86. Mr. Fonner donated the original land so the racetrack could be launched.
Nov. 4, 1961 — A mezzanine floor is scheduled to be added to the grandstand at the track in the spring. The addition includes 53 mutuel windows that should ease overcrowding on the ground floor. The cost for the project is $70,000.
June 23, 1962 — The track announces plans to build two new barns and enlarge old barns. The $70,000 project will give the track 120 new stalls and increase horse capacity to 764.
Aug. 8, 1963 — A new barn that will be a duplicate of two horse structures that were built last year is planned.
The $33,500 project will enable the track to stall 800 horses. Plans are also under way to redecorate the 4-H building, paint barns and "beautify the park in general."
Jan. 11, 1966 — Construction is progressing on a $287,000 addition to the south end of the track grandstand.
The 151-foot addition will seat 1,400 and raise capacity to 3,900. Office space, a paddock area and a jockey's quarters are added as part of the project.
Jan. 15, 1970 — A multi-purpose building that that can accommodate 280 horses is nearing completion. The
$500,000 complex includes a quarter-mile indoor training track that is 26 feet wide. "No other indoor thoroughbred training facility of this size can be found in this part of the nation," then-general manager Al
Swihart said.
Nov. 12, 1971 — The longest thoroughbred racing season in history, 132 days, is tentatively announced by the
Nebraska State Racing Commission. After setting live-meet records for attendance (165,411) and mutuel handle ($8,232,905) in 1971, Fonner Park is scheduled to open on March 3. Racing is slated to continue through April 29.
Sept. 19, 1972 — A major grandstand expansion that is expected to cost $400,000 is announced by the track.
When finished, a clubhouse section that can accommodate 640 fans will be the latest addition. A story about the project notes that "it is anticipated that the entire clubhouse section will be completely carpeted." The
5 track's mezzanine and lower-floor concourse will also be extended to the north. There is also talk of offering valet car parking service.
Nov. 4, 1972 — Work gets under way on a new $400,000 clubhouse at the track. The addition is the fourth major building project at the track and was added at the same time as a computerized bet totaler that recorded wagering.
March 1, 1973 — A 100-foot extension of the grandstand's north end gives the track a clubhouse that will accommodate 600 fans. Forty new parimutuel windows are included in the expansion that enables the track to handle 10,000 fans.
April 13, 1976 — The track makes its largest contribution to civic and charitable causes by donating $273,980.
The track also announces that it paid almost $730,000 in taxes during the preceding year. A newspaper photo shows actor Robert Taylor checking out a TV screen that displays race odds. Taylor is a Nebraska native who starred in movies like "Tip On a Dead Jockey" (1957) and "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows” (1968).
Aug. 26, 1976 — Construction is under way on the third level of the track's grandstand. The level will contain bleacher seating.
Oct. 2, 1976 — The track announces the hiring of Bruce Swihart as administrative assistant.
March 10, 1977 — Black Ticket pays an astounding $520.40 to win. That payoff for a $2 ticket is the 24th highest win price ever paid. Black Ticket paid $218 to place and $31.20 to show.
March 2, 1978 — Fonner Park begins its 25th season of racing. General Manager Al Swihart says: "More people will be at Fonner Park in a week than attended the entire first meeting. The principle’s stayed the same — make everybody happy." It is also announced that more than $1 million in purse money will be awarded for the first time in 1978.
July 12, 1978 — The track announces that over $61,000 in donations were made to various projects through the fiscal year.
6 Jan. 11, 1979 — A petition supporting Sunday racing is circulated in Grand Island. The drive was organized by
Tom Dexter, a Grand Island resident who did not want his freedom to go the track on Sunday taken away "by a small few that feel we should sit at home on Sunday.”
January 1979 — Construction continues a multi-purpose arena on the east side of the track grounds is under way thanks to a $100,000 donation by longtime Grand Island residents Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Thompson. The remaining cost of the building — $250,000 — will be paid by the track. Thompson was the founder of the
Thompson Candy Co. and was also a horse enthusiast. The building will be known as the Thompson Arena.
Feb. 27, 1979 — Track officials expect the addition of eight Sunday race cards to be a big boost to Fonner Park.
The biggest improvement made at the track is new stadium seating in the reserved section. The 1,543 box and grandstand seats replace the old chair arrangement.
March 12, 1979 — An on-track crowd of 7,460 attends the first Sunday card offered at the track. The Grand
Island Ministerial Association plans to fight Sunday racing in 1980.
April 2, 1980 — For the second day, jockeys refused to ride because of track conditions they deemed unsafe.
June 3, 1980 – The “Night of the Twisters” spares Fonner Park with only minor damage as seven tornados ravage Grand Island and the surrounding area. Tornado number 5, ranked an F4 on the Fujita scale
(“devastating damage”), touched down at 10:16 P.M. and traveled in a crescent moon path around the Fonner
Park campus to the north, west, and south. That tornado tragically killed three of the five people who died in
Grand Island that night. While tornado number 5 was on the ground, tornado number 6 touched down within one-and-a-half miles of it to the southeast of Fonner Park’s campus at 10:25 P.M. Both tornadoes had dissipated by 10:35 P.M.
Dec. 4, 1980 — The Hall County Livestock Improvement Association has no immediate plans to appeal a court ruling that upheld Grand Island's vote to discontinue Sunday horse racing. Lancaster County district judge
William Blue had ruled in favor of a state law allowing cities to prohibit Sunday racing by election. Grand
Island voters in the May primary decided to prohibit Sunday racing at the track.

Jan. 14, 1981 — Legislation to remove the right of local voters to approve or reject Sunday racing was introduced by Sen. Howard Peterson of Grand Island. The bill draws immediate opposition from the Rev.
Robert Wade of the Grand Island Ministerial Association. Two weeks later, then-general manager Al Swihart warns that Fonner Park will soon close its doors if Sunday racing is not allowed. A study says the track will lose
$38,000 in 1981 by not having Sunday racing. That figure was expected to grow to $217,000 by 1984. Senator
Peterson’s bill failed, but eventually voters reversed course and approved Sunday racing.
8 Feb. 20, 1983 — Longtime Fonner Park general manager Al Swihart dies. He served as the track's top executive for over a quarter of a century and oversaw the track's many improvements and significant growth. Hugh
Miner Jr. is named as Miner's replacement in March.
April 16, 1983 — A record on-track mutuel handle of $1,204,660 is recorded. An on-track crowd of 9,635 — the fourth-highest turnout in track history — created a record-setting day at the mutuel window. At the time, the on-track attendance record of 10,387 was set on April 2, 1977 and lasted until April 7, 2019.
March 16, 1985 — The track refund record was set when a gate malfunction prompted $84,184 in refunds.
Feb. 18, 1988 — The track is ready to simulcast its races to Omaha and Lincoln if the truck arrived in time. The first truck carrying the simulcast equipment was totaled after it rolled en route to Grand Island. A second truck was deemed unusable after it slid into a ditch near Cincinnati.
April 17, 1988 — Eight weeks of live racing while simulcasting for the first time had positive and negative results. The overall daily attendance for racing in Nebraska increased 59.1 percent compared to the year before while the mutuel handle is up 56.7 percent. On track, the mutuel handle is down 25.8 percent while attendance is down 15.5 percent. Simulcasting draws mixed reaction from Jack Jensen, a Roseland native who has watched horse racing in the state decline. "It's been hard for someone like me who loves racing to see it go down the tubes the last few years,” Jensen said. "The jury's still out on this one.”
May 19, 1988 — Track officials plan to spend $160,000 this summer on safety improvements that include banked turns, a new guard rail and a resurfaced track. A drainage lake will also be built on the infield.
March 13, 1990 — A $26,474.40 trifecta is paid to fans holding a 2-6-5 ticket. That payout is a track record.
April 28, 1990 — Patrons wager a record $1,285,011 on Fonner Park’s races.
March 16, 1991 — Three stablemates — Crafty Ridan, Kobrakaun and Full of Dooba — accomplish a first at the track by sweeping the top three spots in the Eagles Handicap. The feat is later equaled by trainers Johnny
Rohrbough and Brian Roberts.
9 December 1992 — Fonner Park is designated to host the Hall County Keno lottery. Initially two satellite operations are licensed as well.
Feb. 26, 1994 — Nine trainers lose 36 horses in a fire at Barn R. An emersion heater is blamed for the blaze that created the biggest fire in the history of the track.
April 29, 1995 — I'ma Game Master and Glaring combine to create one of the most exciting races in track history by finishing in a dead heat in the Bosselman/Gus Fonner Handicap. Ten excruciating minutes pass after the horses cross the finish line before the race is declared a tie.
April 2, 2000 — Jockey Ken Shino ties a national record and sets a track mark by winning eight races in one day. Shino also set a track record by winning seven straight races.
Feb. 17, 2001 — Leaping Plum wins the Grasmick Handicap for the seventh straight time. That streak is believed to be a national record for consecutive wins in the same stakes race.
December 10, 2004 — Construction begins on the 6,000-seat Heartland Events Center attached to the historic grandstand. The Heartland Event Center would host its first concerts at the 2006 Hall County Fair.
July 2009 — Ground is broken for construction of over one-half million square feet of buildings in preparation for the relocation of the Nebraska State Fair from Lincoln. Fonner Park donates the land for the buildings. The
State Fair opens in Grand Island in August 2010.
Spring 2016 — An equine herpes outbreak, a potentially fatal virus in horses, forces Fonner Park into quarantine for the end of its live race meet. Horses are not allowed to ship in for the signature race, the
Bosselman / Pump & Pantry Gus Fonner Handicap.
2017 — Combative negotiations with the Nebraska HBPA lead to a two-week shutdown of simulcast operations and a delay in allowing horses to arrive at the Fonner Park facility for the subsequent 2018 live meet.
April 19, 2018 — Todd Otto, the CFO of Fonner Park, unexpectedly passes away. Purple tulips would be added to the Fonner Park infield in homage to him. Until 1995, the #7 horse had purple saddlecloths and
10 corresponding jockey silks. Todd’s mother, Beverly Otto (wife of two-term Fonner Park president W. K. Otto), always bet the #7 horse with the purple saddlecloths in the seventh race; Todd respected that tradition long after her passing and it is now memorialized by the tulips. The largest handicapping contest held at Fonner
Park, which Todd was instrumental in founding, is renamed in his honor as well.
April 7, 2019 — A record crowd of over 11,000 people come to Fonner Park to see ostrich and camel races held in between the thoroughbred races.
July 31, 2019 — Bruce Swihart retires as CEO of Fonner Park and the Heartland Events Centers after working at Fonner Park for 43 years. He is replaced by Chris Kotulak, the former track announcer of Fonner Park and a national industry broadcaster and analyst.
March 16, 2020 — Due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele requests that
Fonner Park not allow spectators into the facility to watch live racing. Fonner Park obliges and closes its doors to fans but continues racing to support the horsemen. Live race days are moved to Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Wednesdays to attract internet handle from across the country, but not from Nebraska where internet wagering remains illegal.
April 21, 2020 — Fonner Park extends its race meet for an additional twelve days as other Nebraska tracks are not able to race during the pandemic. Racetracks around the country and the world continue to shut down during the pandemic leaving Fonner Park as one of the few remaining open racetracks. Fonner Park is the subject of a feature article in The New York Times and is pictured in National Geographic.
May 29, 2020 — Fonner Park ends the 2020 race meet after 40 days of live racing. Total handle for the race meet is over $107 million due almost entirely to online handle from around the world.
November 3, 2020 — Nebraskans overwhelmingly approve casino gaming by voting for three separate ballot initiatives to allow games of chance in the state. As part of the ballot initiatives, games of chance are limited by the state constitution to occur only at licensed racetrack enclosures.

Tuesday, January 21 The first positive test in the United States is reported in Washington state.
Friday, February 21 – Sunday, February 23 Fonner Park opens its 66th season of racing with a full grandstand on Saturday.
Friday, March 6 The first confirmed positive test is reported in Nebraska.
Wednesday, March 11 The World Health Organization declares COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic.
Monday, March 16 Governor Pete Ricketts limits public events to fifty people.
Tuesday, March 17 Grand Island Mayor Roger Steele requests that Fonner Park suspend racing operations with spectators. CEO Chris Kotulak asks if Fonner Park may run without spectators and social distancing rules in place. Mayor Steele approves. The Finish Line Restaurant, which serves as Fonner Park’s restaurant and simulcast facility, is limited to fifty patrons.
The 146th Kentucky Derby is postponed from May 2, 2020 to September 5, 2020.
Wednesday, March 18 Governor Ricketts limits public events in Douglas County to ten people or less.
Thursday, March 19 With local approval to continue racing without spectators, the Nebraska HBPA and Fonner Park finalize terms to continue racing at Fonner Park for a two-week trial period.
The Nebraska State Racing Commission calls an emergency meeting late in the evening via teleconference and approves no-spectator racing for the two-week trial period. The Commission
55 mandates that the facility adopt the stricter standards of Douglas County and is limited to ten patrons at a time, including the Finish Line Restaurant.
Friday, March 20 through Sunday, March 22 Racing is cancelled as track management finalizes plans and procedures for no-spectator racing during the two-week trial period.
Monday, March 23 Fonner Park begins racing with no spectators, with post time at either 3:30 P.M. or 4:00 P.M. central time as daylight allows. Handle increases from $204,590 on the prior Sunday to $1,340,265 as online betters across the nation have few racetracks to wager on Mondays.
Wednesday, March 25 All in-person and patio dining in Hall County is banned by the Hall County Board of Supervisors.
Thursday, March 26 The increased national handle places heavy demands on Fonner Park’s cash flows. Home Federal Savings and Loan extends a significant receivables line of credit to Fonner Park to enable the settlement of pari-mutuel wagers made across the country on Fonner Park’s races.
Monday, March 30 Major population centers in the United States, as well as around the world, are under shelter-at-home orders. Racetracks in those areas continue closing, and only Fonner Park and Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Oklahoma race on Mondays and Tuesdays. Tampa Bay Downs joins those two racetracks on Wednesdays. As one of the few tracks in the world able to run during the pandemic, Fonner Park gains international attention with its races broadcast across the world including to Australia, the United Kingdom, France, and South America.
Wednesday, April 1 The two-week trial ends with Fonner Park averaging over $2 million in handle per day. The HBPA and Fonner Park agree to continue racing under the current agreement until the end of the regularly scheduled meet which would have been Saturday, May 2 but is moved forward to Wednesday, April 29.
56 Friday, April 3 The Racing Commission holds another emergency meeting via teleconference to approve racing without spectators until April 29. The Commission also mandates that horses are staggered into the paddock to ensure that appropriate social distancing is enforced.
Governor Ricketts limits all gatherings in the state to ten people or less.
Tuesday, April 7 The Tom Dinsdale Automotive Jackpot Pick 5 carryover grows to $497,811 and a mandatory payout on the pool is issued on April 7. The wager draws nearly $3.7 million in new wagers and the total handle for the day exceeds $7.2 million, a record that still stands as the all-time highest handle on a Nebraska race card.
Friday, April 10 Hall County receives national attention as a hotspot for COVID-19 outbreaks, particularly at the JBS packing plant. Fonner Park is praised by state and local officials for having implemented stricter social distancing policies weeks before other local businesses.
Monday, April 20 The two divisions of the Fonner Park Special Stakes are consolidated into one division with a purse of $30,000 making it the second-most lucrative race of the season. The race is won by Ye Be Judged, trained by Marissa Black and owned by the Landis Stables, by eight-and-a-half lengths.
Tuesday, April 21 Horsemen’s Park in Omaha, which is scheduled to begin racing in early May immediately after Fonner Park’s meet, announces it will remain shuttered during the pandemic. Fonner Park and the Nebraska HBPA agree to terms to extend racing at Fonner Park in a “Second Season” for twelve race days through May 27, 2020.
Wednesday, April 22 The Racing Commission officially cancels Horsemen’s Park’s race dates and approves Fonner Park’s Second Season.
Wednesday, April 29 Fonner’s first season concludes with the running of the Bosselman Pump & Pantry / Gus Fonner Handicap, reduced to a purse of $50,000. The race is won by Sleepy Eyes Todd, a horse that shipped in for the race and was trained by Miguel Silva. Sleepy Eyes Todd would go on to be one of the most
57 successful Bosselman Pump & Pantry / Gus Fonner winners ever, winning the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic and the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Gulfstream later in 2020.
Final pool tabulations show that during the month of April, Fonner Park averaged over $4.2 million in daily handle.
Monday, May 4 Fonner’s Second Season commences continuing racing on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. Trainer records and equine statistics are carried forward from the first season.
Tuesday, May 12 The New York Times publishes a full-length feature on Fonner Park’s success during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wednesday, May 13 through Friday, May 15 Multiple racetracks across the country announce reopening dates in late May and June. Anticipating no-spectator racing for several more months, six of those tracks change to Monday through Thursday racing trying to replicate Fonner Park’s success.
Thursday, May 14 Charles Town and Golden Gate Fields resume no-spectator racing, the first racetracks to reopen since the mass closures in March. Those two tracks are joined by Santa Anita Park and Churchill Downs later that weekend.
Wednesday, May 20 National Geographic magazine publishes a feature story on Grand Island and the COVID-19 virus. The article includes a photo of spectators watching a race at Fonner Park from their cars outside the homestretch fence.
Fonner Park cancels Wednesday racing as field sizes had been shrinking due to the intensive race schedule since February. The Second Season is reduced from twelve to eleven total race days.
Friday, May 22 Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, becomes the first racetrack in the country to reopen with spectators, though it limits attendance to twenty-five percent of the facility’s capacity.
58 Monday, May 25 On Memorial Day, stiff competition from other national tracks that are resuming races causes Fonner Park’s handle to drop from $3.1 million on the previous Wednesday to $783,000 on this date.
Wednesday, May 27 Racing concludes for the second season. Total handle on Fonner Park’s 2020 live racing is $107,545,257 according to Equibase records.
June Tracks re-open across the country to no spectators, and many tracks copy Fonner Park’s model of moving racing to Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. In 2019, about five tracks ran each Monday in June, but following Fonner Park’s success, in 2020 approximately thirteen tracks run each Monday. On June 1, the city of Grand Island begins incrementally re-opening businesses for in- house dining and small gatherings.
July Lone Star, the first track in May to re-open to spectators, cancels two weeks of racing due to a resurgence of Covid-19 in Texas. A new outbreak of the virus in the California jockey colony forces shutdowns in that state. The Hall County Fair is held at Fonner Park with no spectators and only offers agricultural shows which are broadcast live on the fair’s Facebook page.
Remainder of 2020 Tracks continue to re-open across the country and parimutuel handle surges in the summer and fall as racing fans eagerly return to racing. Most tracks race without spectators through the end of 2020. Locally, the Nebraska State Fair holds a limited fair with minimal exhibitions and events, and the Heartland Events Center does not hold any concerts for the remainder of the year.
First quarter of 2021 Widespread distribution of Covid-19 vaccinations begins nationwide in January but is not in time for the beginning of Fonner Park’s 2021 live race meet. The city of Grand Island is under a face mask mandate that expires after Fonner Park’s opening weekend, but in an abundance of caution CEO Chris Kotulak extends the mask mandate on the Fonner Park campus to remain in effect. Fonner Park’s occupancy is limited to 75 percent capacity for the opening weeks.
