Introduction: the international legislative framework Marine biodiversity management includes both species conservation and marine habitats, by means of an increasing international legislative framework. The international treaties include: the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in Washington on 03/03/1973 (CITES; www.cites.org); the Convention on Migratory Species, signed in Bonn on 23/06/79 (CMS); the Ramsar Convention of Wetlands, signed in Ramsar on 02/02/1971 (Ramsar); the Convention on Biological Diversity (Biodiv), signed in Rio de Janeiro on 05/06/1992; and the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, signed in Washington on 02/12/1946 (IWCoffice). On the other hand, the Spanish Government signed the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, in Bern on 19/09/1979 (Bern Convention), a regional treaty for the European conservation of wildlife and the natural environment, by means of inter-state cooperation. The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic (OSPAR Convention) was signed also by Spain in Paris, on 22/09/1992. Finally, the Convention for the Afroeuroasiatic Migrating Aquatic Birds Conservation was signed in La Hague, on 15/08/96 (BOE nº 256, 11/12/01). -
Cameron Dueck Explored Beyond the Beaten Track
a tale of two cities CAMERON DUECK EXPLORED BEYOND THE BEATEN TRACK AROUND THE WATERS OF HIS HOMETOWN, HONG KONG Baona/Getty The old and the new: a traditional junk crosses the glassy waters of Hong Kong Harbour 52 53 ‘Hong Kong is so much more than just a glittering metropolis’ We had just dropped the anchor in a small bay, and I was standing on the deck of our Hallberg-Rassy, surveying the turquoise water and shore that rose steep and green around us. At one end of the bay stood a ramshackle cluster of old British military buildings and an abandoned pearl farm, now covered in vines that were reclaiming the land, while through the mouth of the bay I could see a few high- prowed fishing boats working the South China Sea. I felt drunk with the thrill of new discovery, even though we were in our home waters. I was surprised that I’d never seen this gem of a spot before, and it made me wonder what else I’d find. Hong Kong has been my home for nearly 15 years, during which I’ve hiked from its lush valleys to the tops of its mountain peaks and paddled miles of its rocky shoreline in a sea kayak. I pride myself in having seen Lui/EyeEm/Getty Siu Kwan many of the far-flung corners of this territory. The little-known beauty of Hong Kong’s Sai Kung district I’ve also been an active weekend sailor, crewing on racing yachts and sailing out of every local club. -

BASIC INFORMATION 1.1 Project Title 1.1.1 Port Shelter Sewerage, Stage 3 – Sewerage Works at Po Toi O (hereinafter referred to as the “Project”). 1.2 Purpose and Nature of the Project 1.2.1 In November 1989, Environmental Protection Department (EPD) commissioned a consultancy study entitled “Port Shelter Sewerage Master Plan Study” (SMP) to develop a Sewerage Master Plan for the provision of adequate sewerage and sewage treatment and disposal facilities in Sai Kung Port Shelter areas. The SMP was completed in March 1991. The SMP revealed that sewage generated from the unsewered areas was only partially treated mostly by septic tanks and soakaway systems, and discharged into streams and watercourses, resulting in water pollution to the surrounding waters. -
