MANLY-WARRINGAH RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED ANNUAL REPORT 2012 FOOTBALL CLUB CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Going back to back in the NRL competition has proven too big a task for the defending Premiers each year since 1992, but I can proudly say that in 2012, Geoff Toovey and the boys gave it a red hot go. Despite a host of difficulties, including pre-season disruptions, travelling to the UK for the World Club Challenge, injuries, suspensions and off field distractions, the team, led by Co-Captains Jamie Lyon and Jason King, rallied together magnificently to finish in the Top 4, falling only one game short of another Grand Final appearance after defeat by eventual 2012 Premiers, the Melbourne Storm. Whilst we may not have achieved our ultimate goal of successfully defending our 2011 title, we should not lose sight of just how difficult it is to remain near the top of the NRL competition each year. Accordingly, we should all be extremely proud of what was still a very successful 2012 season for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. In his first year as Head Coach, Geoff Toovey did a fantastic job despite a less than ideal preparation and I am sure he is itching to get into 2013, knowing the experience of his first year under his belt will stand him in good stead for the challenges that lie ahead. With the nucleus of the side being retained long term, particularly our young halves, Keiran Foran and Daly Cherry-Evans, we can all be justifiably confident that a 9th premiership is well within our reach in coming seasons. -

Ferguson Centre for Coastal Management, Southern Cross University, Lismore , New South Wales 2480, Australia ABSTRACT: The influence of marine plants representing different stages of eutrophication on carbon decomposition and production, benthic nutrient fluxes and denitrification was examined in 4 shallow warm-temperate Australian lagoons. Differences in carbon production and decomposition across the lagoons were the main regulators of the quantity and quality of benthic nutrient fluxes and the rela- tive proportion of nitrogen lost through denitrification. For example, the efficiency with which the lagoon sediments recycled nitrogen as N2, (i.e. denitrification efficiency: N2-N/(N2-N + DIN), decreased as carbon decomposition rates increased. C:N ratios of the remineralised organic matter in some of the plant-sediment systems were much higher than expected from the stoichiometry of the dominant carbon supply. Dark DON fluxes were also very high in all the plant-sediment systems (30 to 80% of the total nitrogen flux). We offer 2 alternative explanations for the observed sediment and benthic flux characteristics: (1) The low dark C:N ratios of the remineralised organic matter may have been due to dark uptake by benthic microalgae and possibly other plants. The large DON effluxes were either the hydrolysis product of freshly produced in situ organic material or/and associated with the grazing of benthic microalgae. -

Gray* School of Biological Sciences, University of Sydney, 2006, NSW. Australia ABSTRACT. The effects of species of seagrass (Zostera capricorni and Posidonia australis) on spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the demography of estuarine populations of the palaemonid prawn Macrobrachium intermedium across 65 km of the Sydney region, southeastern Australia, were examined. Three estuaries were sampled in 1983 and 1984 to assess the magnitude of intra- and inter- estuary variability in demographic characteristics among populations. Species of seagrass had no effect on the demographic patterns of populations: differences in the magnitude and directions of change in abundances, recruitment, reproductive characteristics, size structures and growth were as great among populations within each species of seagrass as those between the 2 seagrasses Abiotic factors, such as the location of a meadow in relation to depth of water and distance offshore, and the interactions of these factors with recruiting larvae are hypothesised to have greater influence than the species of seagrass in determining the distribution and abundance of these prawns. Spatial and temporal heterogeneity in demography was similar across all spatial scales sampled: among meadows (50 m to 3 km apart) in an estuary and among meadows in all 3 estuaries (10 to 65 km apart). Variability in demographic processes among populations in the Sydney region was most likely due to stochastic factors extrinsic to the seagrasses then~selves.I conclude that the demography of seagrass-dwelling estuarine populations of M. -
