It’s certainly been a busy start to the year…………………………………….. Freshwater Community Bank® Branch awards the 2019 Ken Ward Memorial Scholarship

Congratulations to Joshua Smith from Secondary College – Balgowlah Boys Campus on receiving the prestigious Freshwater Student of the Year / Ken Ward Memorial Scholarship.

Named in honour of the late Branch Manager, the tertiary scholarship is awarded to northern beaches students from nine local high schools within the Manly and Warringah local government area. Joshua, who is the seventh student to receive the scholarship, will receive $5,000 towards his first year of university and then a further $10,000 towards his second and third years of undergraduate study.

Ken Ward’s daughter Samantha Harding presented Joshua with his certificate at the presentation on 11 Feb 2019 at South Curl Curl SLSC.

Students are nominated by their school principal and need to meet the following three requirements as part of the scholarship criteria: reside and attend a school within the designated area, likely to achieve academic results greater than 90% in five 2-Unit HSC Board Courses and be actively involved in their community, either within their school, locally, state wide or internationally.

The 2019 students certainly did well with one other student also listed on the NSW Board of Studies All Rounders: Joaquin Aitken from St Augustine’s, he will receive a scholarship to the value of $5,000 for his first year of university tertiary study. All seven other nominees will receive $1,000 towards their first year of university tertiary study.

3 | Page Freshwater News Sport and Community ______Manly Warringah AFL

Stevie Johnson makes guest appearance with “The Wolf Pack”, all those attending were anticipating a great contest between the Manly Warringah Wolves and UTS AFC Bats on Sat 25 May at Weldon Oval.

His credentials: - 293 AFL Games for Geelong and The Giants 516 Goals 3 x Premiership Player 1 x Norm Smith Medalist 3 x All Australian

There were far more people than normal positioning themselves behind the boundary line and taking in the action. Having a drawcard of Johnson’s calibre pulled the punters in to Weldon Oval. They watched two sides full of desperation searching for the spark that would restore their form in a tightly contested opening quarter. It was a dour opening, with two goals apiece in the first quarter. As the teams went into their quarter time huddles, the Bats were clinging to a narrow two-point lead.

In the end, the margin was 59 points. Steven Johnson’s guest appearance was a triumph as he finished with five goals. Reuben Laws kept the dream alive with four goals, and along with Lachlan Behagg and Aidan Butler was among the Wolves’ best. While Stevie J signed the autographs and posed for selfies after the match, his cameo in maroon and white delivered plenty of canteen takings, and delivered a confidence and momentum boost for the Wolves. There’s a long way to go to get back within striking distance of the top five, but just maybe the Wolves have taken the first step.

Match Outcome: Manly Warringah – 15.16 (106) UTS AFC – 6.11 (47) Manly Warringah Goals – S Johnson 5, R Laws 4, C D’Souza 2, J Field 2, C Wilson, L Behagg UTS AFC Goals – J Harrison 3, J Watson, T McKenzie, T Garvey
