(4) MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Club is now well into the current officiol yeor ond things seem io be moving well. We tronsferred the BCCA Registrotion Cerfificotes to the AKC right on schedule' Sept. l, olthough it took the concentroted effort of o number of hord worken to help check the currency ond occurocy of the files ond to moke the necessory chonges. About two hundred files hod to be brought up to dote. Our thonks fo those of you who promptly returned the certificotes we senf out for verificotion. You should oll now be proud Possessors of AKC Certificotes of Registrotion. Elsewhere in the Bulletin is o list of Beordie owners whose oddresses were evidently wrong since lhe notices were returned by rhe Post Office. lf you foiled to receive o Certificofe from the AKC' check the list ond contoct me. lwill get your Certificote to you. All of these efforfs were certoinly worth it, for I believe fhof we minimized the problerns for the AKC. lt is hoped thot oll of.our deolings with them will go os smoothly.

Our next mojor contoct wifh the AKC will be when the BCCA sponsors sonctioned "B" motches os port of the effort to quolify eventuolly for speciolty shows. Those locol clubs which ore chosen by the Boord of Directors to host these motches need to continue the efforts to moke our relotionship with the AKC os perfect os possible. [t is hoped thot the most experienced people will leod the octivities with plenty of help from others. The obiecfive must be fo hold flowless events. Numbers ore not porticulorly importont; every- thing working right is poromount. It is importonf not only thot the odministrofive detoils go smoothly, but olso thot those who exhibit ond their Beordies hove os much ring presence os possible. lf's up to oll of us. [n this regord, the BCCGNY ond NEBCC will co-host the first quolifying sonctioned "B" motch in the Hortford. Connecticut, oreo on Februory 19t with Tom Dovies ond me os co-choirmen. The Boord of Directors will nome the hosts for the other two motch shows ond fhe Wn }CCA Speciolty in due course. We will hove plenty of opportunity to shine os o Club.

The Boord of Directors is functioning smoothly, holding o meeting by moil every month. tt is no+ quite os sotisfying os being oble to hove lively discussions in on octuol meeting, but every member is hoving on opportunity to submit ond to vote on Club business. Soon oll locol clubs will be getting copies of the pending Club business ond results of Boord octions. ln this sense, the Club is truly becoming notionol in noture.

Contributing to this trend olso is fhe coll for correspondents for the Bulletin from eoch locol club. The Editor hos been osked to moke o point of noming those clubs who hove not designoted o correspondent ond of those correspondents who hove nof submitted their locol club news. We wont every club to let the other clubs know in every issue whot fhey ore doing. You con get o lot of good ideos this woy. lncidentolly, this brings up the point of *hot n"*r should be included in these columns. lt should be news of club octivities - ond only club octivities. The rest of us ore very interested in the motch shows you hold ond the resulfs, the progroms you hove hod ot your meefings, ond ony ofher creotive ideos you hove dreomed up for your club to sponsor. These columns should not be used fo report on personol occomplishments - show wins of members, qvoilobility of litters, etc. This type of news should certoinly be included in your locol newsletfer, ond, if it is newsworthy enough" writfen up ond submifted os o news orticle or included in your od in the Bulletin. The club news column is to serve the locol clubs for on inferchonge of ideos. Perhops, in oddition, we need someone to outhor o quorterly column on significont Beordie wins ond perhops onother on occomplishments or recognifion of Beordie per:onolities. We ore olwoys open to suggestions on woys to moke the Bulletin more effective ond inferesfing os o meons of communicotion omong Club members.

I om proud lo qnnounce thot the ,AKC hos ogreed to feoture on orticle on Beordies in on issue of the Gozetfe soonn hopefully the Februory 1977 issue since thot is the month we con stort showing in the Working Group. We hove so for foiled to sotisfy their requiremenls for o cover picture ond thot moy hove to come o few monlhs loter. But they hove promised us boih - on orticle in Februory if possible ond o front cover soon. lncidentolly, the AKC rrrecognized" Boord of Directors hos opproved the present Beordie Stondord for our new stotus. A copy of this oction will be sent out to oll memberc soon. ln closing, I hove been osked to repeot o thought I expressed in the messoges Tom Dovies ond I sent to you ot the storf of this officiol yeor. Right now Beordies ond their owners ore going through whot should be our most chollenging experience. Beordies hove iust been "recognized" ond ore in the limelight - ond we no longer need to pull fogether for recognition. The situotion is olmost ideol for on "every mon for himself" ottitude; the situotion is olmosf ideol for ruining our breed. Do we now os individuols exploit fhe situotion for personol goin ond ombition or do we commit ourselves to doing oll possible to improve the breed? I om tolking obouf QUALITY. The best bitches bred to the best compotible (hos your club hod o progrom on genetics?), the best Beordies competing properly in shows (would you loke odvontoge of the initiol inexperience of iudges with Beordies by showing o dog which you know hos serious foulfs or one clipped or excessively groomed?), odvice ond knowledge from the most experienced breeders (hove you become on insfont Beordie expert with your firsi Beordie or your first litter?), litters only when there is on opportunity for improving your siock (get homsters if your children need on obiect lesson in sex!). coreful plocement of puppies in homes where they ore most likely fo become o member of the fomily (hove you ever turned down o buyer?). You oll know whot Iom driving ot. Enioy every Beordie for his inherent oppeol. But if you ore going to show or breed'QUALITY! How much do you love Beordies?

WORKSHOP ON THE BfARDED STANDARD

The Committee on fhe Stondord is plonning to sponsor o workshop on fhe Beordie Sfondord for working group iudges in December. h will consist of discussions between o ponel of iudges ond one of Beordie breeders on points in the Stondord which moy seem ombiguous. Other invited iudges ond the oudience will be oble to porticipote in the discussions. The obiective is to help fhe iudges understond Beordies better ond to find out whot these people who will soon be iudging Beordies find voguen misleoding or obsenf from the Stondord. This informotion will be involuoble in the Commiffee's work of preporing o droft Stondord. We will report to the Boord of Directors ond the membership on fhe results of the workshop.

tsf,{RDED COIJ,IES by Carol Gold A Bearded Collie breeder in Australia, Keith Higgins, has unearthed evidence that sugqests the Seardie was t he foundatlon of the .,\ustralian Cat,tle Dog. He was anoroached b1r people who were writing a history of the cattle dog and had come upon references to a Highland Co11ie apparently arriving in Australia with the First Fleet in 1788. They wanted to know if he could ldentify the Highland Collie. As Beardie people icror+, that was an earlier name for our own breed. Keith is now pursuing his own research on the proJect. Bearrlies, of course, are natural rrheelerstr and hill-gathering dogs. It was their job to bring in the sheep and cattLe left to forage on the Soottish highlands and ihey worked independently because the shepherd often had no iCea whter the sheep or the dog were because of the rocky, hilly cor:ntry. T'hey also were especial-ly prized as droversl dogs, being sent on their own to drive herds of eattl-e to market, So itrs not surpris- 1ng that tseardies are doing eo well as the;r get into the first levels of stock dog conoetitions in the United States. Jo Parker, a Co}orado Beardie and Sheltle breeder, sent me a brief exnlanation of the levels of stock dog triala. Stock Dog _I baslcally recuires the dog to show the deslre to work while remaini-ng r:ndei Confrol-. He must be steady on the rtd614ntt both on and off the stock and stop worklng on consnand. Stock Dog II reculres a dog to show competency in hls natural way of working, elther as a qatherer or drover. He nust obey dlrectional eonurands, grolng right or l-eft as ordered, and show a ehange of paee. Stock Dog III reeuires the dog to work in the onposite way from his instinet. Stock FFTV t eqffies a perfornanee slmllar to that 1n trial-s. t,,hether Beardies, with theit independent intelligenee, will do well in the higher levels re,nnains to be seen. But tneir succees so far is encouraging to t"ose of us wl'to want to preserye the Beardie as a tnre worki::g breed. In line with this, ltts good to remember that a hardy worklng dog like the Beardie needs good strong bone constnrction. As our speelalty Judge, Suzanne Moorhouse, pointed there 16r* very fine-boned BeardLes about and this should not be encouraged, out, """ (Jo Parker has promised us an article on her work with her Beardies ln herding for the nexl lesue of the Bulletln. ) (18) -
