Large Scale Deployment of SMPTE 2110: the IP Live Production Facility
SMPTE Meeting Presentation Large Scale Deployment of SMPTE 2110: The IP Live Production Facility Steve Sneddon NBCUniversal, [email protected] Chris Swisher NBCUniversal, [email protected] Jeff Mayzurk NBCUniversal, [email protected] Written for presentation at the SMPTE 2019 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition Abstract. In 2016, NBCUniversal began the project to design and build the new global headquarters for Telemundo Enterprises in Miami Florida. The facility that became known as Telemundo Center would feature 13 production studios and seven control rooms supporting scripted episodic content, daily live news and sports programming, beginning with FIFA World Cup 2018. To support the scale and flexibility required for a facility of this magnitude, the key technical design consideration was the use of a software-defined video network infrastructure. At the time of launch in spring of 2018, Telemundo Center was home to the largest SMPTE ST 2110 environment in the world, consisting of over 12,000 unique HD sources and 150,000 multicast streams across audio and video. This paper will explore the major considerations and challenges in building such a large scale, all-IP broadcast production facility. We will demonstrate design factors around switching of video flows, redundancy, control and orchestration, PTP master clock systems and handoffs to multi-manufacturer SMPTE ST 2110 devices as well as non-IP enabled devices. This paper will also discuss our experience and lessons learned with utilizing a Software -

PRACTICAL METHODS to VALIDATE ULTRA HD 4K CONTENT Sean Mccarthy, Ph.D
PRACTICAL METHODS TO VALIDATE ULTRA HD 4K CONTENT Sean McCarthy, Ph.D. ARRIS Abstract Yet now, before we hardly got used to HD, we are talking about Ultra HD (UHD) with at Ultra High Definition television is many least four times as many pixels as HD. In things: more pixels, more color, more addition to and along with UHD, we are contrast, and higher frame rates. Of these getting a brand new wave of television parameters, “more pixels” is much more viewing options. The Internet has become a mature commercially and Ultra HD 4k TVs rival of legacy managed television distribution are taking their place in peoples’ homes. Yet, pipes. Over-the-top (OTT) bandwidth is now Ultra HD content and service offerings are often large enough to support 4k UHD playing catch-up. We don’t yet have enough exploration. New compression technologies experience to know what good Ultra HD 4k such as HEVC are now available to make content is nor do we know how much better use of video distribution channels. And bandwidth to allocate to deliver great Ultra the television itself is no longer confined to HD experiences to consumers. In this paper, the home. Every tablet, notebook, PC, and we describe techniques and tools that could smartphone now has a part time job as a TV be used to validate the quality of screen; and more and more of those evolved- uncompressed and compressed Ultra HD 4k from-computer TVs have pixel density and content so that we can plan bandwidth resolution to rival dedicated TV displays. -

The optimal viewing experience consists of award-winning content, delivered in stunning visual quality. To deliver on that standard, Globo 4K was one of the fi rst mainstream broadcasters outside of the US to off er content in 4K, adopting it as a new standard across its platforms and devices. It has already produced more than two hundred hours of 4K content (including HDR) with over a thousand hours of encoding output with its soap operas and original series. -
