NATIONAL SAMPLE FROM THE 1851 CENSUS OF GREAT BRITAIN LIST OF SAMPLE CLUSTERS The listing is arranged in four columns, and is listed in cluster code order, but other orderings are available. The first column gives the county code; this code corresponds with the county code used in the standardised version of the data. An index of the county codes forms Appendix 1 The second column gives the cluster type. These cluster types correspond with the stratification parameter used in sampling and have been listed in Background Paper II. Their definitions are as follows: 11 English category I 'Communities' under 2,000 population 12 Scottish category I 'Communities' under 2,000 population 21 Category IIA and VI 'Towns' and Municipal Boroughs 26 Category IIB Parliamentary Boroughs 31 Category III 'Large non-urban communities' 41 Category IV Residual 'non-urban' areas 51 Category VII Unallocable 'urban' areas 91 Category IX Institutions The third column gives the cluster code numbers. This corresponds to the computing data set name, except that in the computing data set names the code number is preceded by the letters PAR (e.g. PAR0601). The fourth column gives the name of the cluster community. It should be noted that, with the exception of clusters coded 11,12 and 91, the cluster unit is the enumeration district and not the whole community. Clusters coded 11 and 12, however, correspond to total 'communities' (see Background Paper II). Clusters coded 91 comprise twenty successive individuals in every thousand, from a list of all inmates of institutions concatenated into a continuous sampling frame; except that 'families' are not broken, and where the twenty individuals come from more than one institution, each institution forms a separate cluster. -

Annotation This thesis is devoted to the lexico-semantic features of Cockney dialect and slang in selected British films and TV series. The theoretical part focuses on the description of Cockney dialect and slang in general and it thoroughly describes three main lexico-semantic features of Cockney, namely general vocabulary of Cockney slang, rhyming slang and back slang. The analytical part studies the meanings, usage and connotations of the aforementioned features in regard to the situational context of the films and TV series. -

By staging playgoing in front of playgoers, playwrights sought to teach their audiences how to attend a play and how to react to a performance. This type of instruction was possible, and perhaps necessary, because in early modern London attending a professionally produced play with thousands of other playgoers was a genuinely new cultural activity, so no established tradition of playgoing existed. Thus, playwrights throughout the era from John Lyly to Richard Brome attempted to invent playgoing through their performances. The first chapter argues that this construction of playgoing was heavily influenced by the politics and economics of the London playhouses. Throughout the early modern era, London magistrates and puritan antitheatrical writers viewed performances as producing the immoral, unruly and often riotous actions of the audiences. And they used these reactions to performances as an excuse to close the playhouses and punish the playwrights. -

So summer is fast slipping away and the dark mornings & nights are already back with us. The garden is starting to look tired, with some old favourites finished for another year although the tomatoes & Apples are plentiful (that’s of course if like me you have an Apple tree!). It won’t be long now before were scraping the cars again! As usual I would like to thank all of you who have sent me messages of support for the newsletter – thank you, it is much appreciated although undoubtedly thanks to all you who have contributed – that said, please do keep your memories and stories coming folks as this is what helps me produce such bumper editions. I know I have probably used too many articles in one go, and the puritans amongst us will advise to hold some back, and I have, so if you have sent me material and you don’t see it in here, it will be in the next edition. I have a promise of many more articles to come from various sources although inevitably, the newsletter will start to get smaller in time, so keep it coming folks. Some of you have sent me some photographs. These really are wonderful as they help boost the archive, so many many thanks. -

So, as we struggle through the constraints of Covid19, the Club This year marks the 75th anniversary of WW2 and the 80th remains active and vibrant! anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Unsure what awaits them in London, they are about to get a very nasty shock. he children knew exactly where they wanted to be in London. Victoria Station. Quite near Buckingham Palace. T On the way home from Wolverhampton in Yusra’s dad’s car, they’d read stories on the Museum’s website and found out some amazing facts about Sunday 15th September 1940. It was the day that Hitler launched a huge aerial attack on Britain. Hitler’s plan to invade was called Operation Sea Lion and, as well as having hundreds of bombers coming over to flatten London in his biggest aerial attack yet, he had tens of thousands of men ready to come across the English Channel in barges to land and take control. If the Luftwaffe could beat the RAF and take control of the skies, the invasion could go ahead. But, reading on, the children found out that instead, the RAF inflicted heavy losses on the German air force and Hitler decided to postpone Operation Sea Lion, never to be seen through. In Britain we now call September 15th Battle of Britain Day. They also read on the RAF Museum website about a famous pilot: On Sunday 15th September 1940, Sergeant Ray Holmes was taking a bath when a RADAR station on the south coast picked up a sudden activity.
