Richard Abrams, M.D. Dr. Abrams has practiced internal medicine for over 40 years at Rose Medical Center, where he founded Colorado Preventive Medicine in 2006. Dr. Abrams and colleagues showed that with contemporary diabetes care, pregnancy was safe for both mother and child. Rick edited the first editions of the American Diabetes Association books-- Diabetes During Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes. He has also written and edited 5 medical books and numerous articles. His book, Will It Hurt the Baby, was featured on NBC’s Today Show, ABC’s Good Morning America, and CBS’s This Morning. A highlight of Rick’s professional life is serving on the Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CDF) Board of Directors and Scientific Advisory Board for over 30 years. The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) is one of the nation’s premier clinical care facilities and research centers. His participation in the success of the CDF and BDC continues to be an honor. Rick’s life is enriched by the love and support of his wife Carol, his son Brian, his daughter Katie, daughter-in-law Nora, son-in-law Tzur, and his 3 grandsons Xander, Knox, and Liam. June 1, 2015, Issue 450 Addressing SaladGate Six pages of in-depth reporting on Women In Country and a post-CRS panel write-up in which Keith Hill urged slashing female- voiced songs made nary a ripple outside the business a few months back. But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. • Jamey Johnson
ACM Week With... Jameyas Vegas. April, 2009. Jamey Johnson ascends to the ACM stage to Johnson accept Song of the Year for “In Color.” He is planning a little-known Lemotional tribute for his upcoming performance on the show. And the next day, he’ll pay tribute to a man who, in many respects, made it all possible. Two years earlier at the same event, George Strait’s “Give It Away” won Song of the Year, and co-writer Johnson took heart. “That’s the song that in many ways revived my will to keep doing this,” he says. “Not that I decided I was going to quit, but him cutting that straight, traditional-type song showed me there’s an audience out there. It instilled hope in me that people were looking for that kind of music.” And for Johnson, unquestionably, the music is everything. Strait’s cut starts a chain of events that eventually results in Mercury picking up Johnson’s self- released That Lonesome Song, now a gold record and one of the most widely praised country albums in years. And an amazing weekend in Las Vegas helps show Johnson just how far that music has taken him. “It’s like being welcomed into a family,” Johnson says of his full-circle journey. “It’s just a huge honor.” Music First: Performing for two national television broadcasts, one live and one taped, is the entirety of Johnson’s focus leading up to the shows. “I brought my band and I’m playing live,” he tells Country Aircheck two days before the awards.

Talented artists representing a vast array of religious groups in America express their religion through popular music styles. Christian Rock, Jewish Reggae and Muslim Hip-Hop are not anomalies; rather they are indicative of a larger subculture of radio-ready religious music. This pop music has a purpose but it is not a singular purpose. This music might enhance the worship experience, provide a wholesome alternative to the unsavory choices provided by secular artists, infiltrate the mainstream culture with a positive message, raise the level of musicianship in the religious subculture or appeal to a religious audience despite origins in the secular world.
