LUNAR OBSERVANCE DAYS These days are devoted to quiet reflection at the monastery. Visitors may come and take the Precepts for the day and join in all or part of the extended evening meditation. The dates for the lunar calendar are determined by traditional methods of calculation, and are not always the same as the precise astronomical occurrences. THE FULL-MOON DAYS OF 2009 2552/53 Magha Puja March 00 ('Sangha Day') Commemorates the spontaneous gathering of 1250 arahants, to whom the Buddha gave the exhortation on the basis of the discipline (Ovada Patimokkha) Vesakha Puja (Wesak) May 00 ('Buddha Day') Commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing away of the Buddha. Asalha Puja July 00 ('Dhamma Day') Commemorates the Buddha's first discourse, given to the five samanas in the Deer Park at Sarnath, near Varanasi. The traditional Rainy-Season Retreat (Vassa) begins on the next day. Pavarana Day October 00 This marks the end of the three-month Vassa-retreat. In the following month, lay people may offer the Kathina-robe as part of a general alms-giving ceremony. It is the quali- ties that we remember of each other as we think about our friends. It’s the qualities that are important, and those are the things that are actually carried on—various qualities. So, for ourselves as well, trying to recollect what kind of qualities to bring into our own lives. How do we want to associate with others? And how are we able to relate to each other in ways of friendship? In particular, in Buddhist teachings, the Buddha places a great importance on spiritual friendship or admirable friendship, Kaly€namitta. When we have noble friends or have Nathan, Steven, Sunny, Faith and Brandon, and Bennett good friends, those are the things that help support us in our own life and in our own aspiration for living skillfully. We are not stuff that abides, but patterns that perpetuate themselves. Norbert Wiener (1950, 96) There have been many famous, and sometimes fruitful, comparisons between quantum physics and Eastern thought, but only recently has a fruitful dialogue emerged between biology and Buddhist thought. This paper engages this dialogue by examining and comparing core principles from evolutionary biology and early Buddhist thought, which taken together elucidate a more fully embodied view of our minds and selves as inseparable from the natural world. We shall first present the basic Buddhist notion of dependent arising (pratitya-samutpada) - that all conditioned phenomenon arise in dependence upon other phenomena - and examine its implications for understanding the development of species and the functioning of organisms. We shall then explore and elaborate some basic congruities between dependent arising and evolutionary biology for an ontogeny of mind. Rather than diminishing our significance as creative, spiritual beings, the radical interdependence articulated by both Buddhism and biology may actually serve to ameliorate our alienation from the natural world, and ultimately from ourselves. To the extent that they forge a view of embodied interdependence and deep belonging in the universe, they may suggest a path beyond the stale dichotomy of spirit and matter that underlies so much of this alienation. This dialogue is possible only because there has been a fortuitous convergence in the latter half of the twentieth century between early Buddhist concepts and more recent developments in Western thought. -

Buddhism and Science Donald S. Lopez, Jr. It is a great honor to be invited to speak at Brookhaven. As will soon become painfully clear, I am a scholar of the humanities, one of “the two cultures” of the academy, according to the famous term coined by C. P. Snow fifty years ago, and a culture different from the natural sciences. Whether or not Snow was right in his characterization, there are differences between the humanities and the natural sciences. You may have heard of the argument between a philosopher and a theoretical physicist about who had the lower equipment costs. The philosopher said, “All I need is a pad of paper and a pencil.” The physicist said, “You win. I need a pad of paper, a pencil, and a wastepaper basket.” There are other differences between the two cultures. Scholars of the humanities, at least those as old as I am, don’t use powerpoint that much. Another difference is rather odd. In the natural sciences, it is often considered rude to read a paper to the audience; the audience should be talked to and not read to. In the humanities, it is considered rude not to read a paper. To read a paper indicates that one cared enough about the audience and the occasion to craft something in advance, paying attention to the conventions of composition. So, I’m afraid I will be reading. But I promise to look up from time to time. And I promise to mention the word “physics.” In fact, I would like to begin with a quotation from Einstein: The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. -
