  • If There's a Pedigree for a Modern Country Music Star, Then Angaleena
If there’s a pedigree for a modern country music star, then Angaleena Presley fits all of the criteria: a coal miner’s daughter; native of Beauty, Kentucky; a direct descendent of the original feuding McCoys; a one-time single mother; a graduate of both the school of hard knocks and college; a former cashier at both Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie. Perhaps best of all the member of Platinum-selling Pistol Annies (with Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe) says she “doesn’t know how to not tell the truth.” That truth shines through on her much-anticipated debut album, American Middle Class, which she co-produced with Jordan Powell. Yet this is not only the kind of truth that country music has always been known for—American Middle Class takes it a step further by not only being a revealing memoir of Presley’s colorful experiences but also a powerful look at contemporary rural American life. “I have lived every minute on this record. My mama ain’t none too happy about me spreading my business around but I have to do it,” Presley says. “It’s the experience of my life from birth to now.” Yet the specificity of the album’s twelve gems only makes it more universal. While zooming in on the details of her own life, Presley exposes themes to which everyone can relate. The album explores everything from a terrible economy to unexpected pregnancies to drug abuse in tightly written songs that transcend the specific and become tales of our shared experiences. “I think a good song is one where people listen to a very personal story and think ‘That’s my story, too,’” Presley says.

  • LA Times James Reed Articles on Bobbie Gentry
L.A. Times Bobbie Gentry Gets her due Four decades since Bobbie Gentry shunned fame, a new box set restores her unrivaled legacy By James Reed This is not a story about what happened to Bobbie Gentry. Plenty have attempted to write that piece, and the mystery continues to be dissected every few years by journalists and admirers who can’t fathom (or accept) why an artist would walk away from her music career at the peak of her powers. No matter what you might have read or heard, the enigmatic woman who wrote, sang and took “Ode to Billie Joe” to the top of the charts in the summer of 1967 is not lost. Bobbie Gentry simply does not want to be found. Nearly 50 years after her final studio album was released, though, here we are still talking about one of pop music’s greatest vanishing acts, the star of her own ghost story. Gentry is alive and presumably well at age 76, living back in the South, where she grew up, but she pulled off the unthinkable in the early 1980s: She disappeared. Poof! After a stint in Las Vegas, Gentry turned her back on show business, never to return despite constant clamoring for her to do so. She left us with a trail of seven groundbreaking albums that became a road map of American roots music, bending country, soul, pop, folk, funk, jazz, show tunes and the blues to her own kaleidoscopic vision. Since then, Gentry’s mystique, and esteem for her work, has only ballooned.

  • Carly Pearce Brings New Music to Watershed
(8.1.19) - https://www.spokesman.com/stories/2019/aug/01/carly-pearce-brings-new-music-to- watershed/ CARLY PEARCE BRINGS NEW MUSIC TO WATERSHED Carly Pearce fans who happened to visit Dollywood, the theme park owned by country legend Dolly Parton in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, in 2007 and 2008 very well could have the ultimate “I saw her when” story. Before her upcoming sophomore album, tours with the likes of Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts and Luke Bryan, and breakthrough singles like “Every Little Thing” and “Hide the Wine,” Pearce was a Dollywood performer. Six times a day, five days a week, Pearce performed in a show that highlighted music from Pigeon Forge, classic country tunes and more modern hits. As the story goes, Pearce persuaded her parents to trade traditional high school for home schooling and move from her native Kentucky to Pigeon Forge to perform at Dollywood. Dollywood wasn’t always in the cards for Pearce, but she saw it as a big opportunity and a step in the right direction toward her ultimate goal. “The plan was how do I get to Nashville, ” Pearce said. “For me, that opportunity came up and allowed me to go and really hone in on my skills as a performer.” Performing at Dollywood, Pearce said, taught her how to make sure her voice was healthy and work with others. It also gave her a chance to see which songs her voice naturally gravitated toward when it came time to pursue a career of her own. Pearce moved to Nashville at 19 and, a few years later, signed publishing and development deals with Sony Records.

  • “Boys 'Round Here”: Masculine Life-Course Narratives in Contemporary Country Music
social sciences $€ £ ¥ Article “Boys ‘Round Here”: Masculine Life-Course Narratives in Contemporary Country Music Cenate Pruitt Department of Sociology & Human Services, University of North Georgia, Gainesville, GA 30566, USA; [email protected] Received: 6 May 2019; Accepted: 4 June 2019; Published: 7 June 2019 Abstract: Country music remains one of the most popular genres in U.S. American society but is historically under-researched compared to rock, rap and other styles. This article extends the social science literature on the genre by examining themes of masculine identity in popular country hits of the current century. A content analysis of 35 top country hits from the last 15 years of the Billboard charts reveals three key masculine archetypes: the lover, the family man and particularly the country boy, which is the dominant masculine image within the last few years of the genre. Together, the three create a life-course narrative where the rambunctious country boy will eventually settle into monogamous heterosexual romance, with marriage and fatherhood presented as the ultimate achievement of successful manhood. A fourth, lesser, archetype, the roughneck, presents an “arrested development” version of the country boy, fully-grown but rejecting the social and familial responsibilities of the other archetypes. These narratives simultaneously challenge some aspects of hegemonic masculinity (urbanity, white-collar labor) while reinforcing others (whiteness, heterosexuality). Keywords: country music; gender; masculinity; life course; fatherhood; identity 1. Introduction Country music, the fourth-most popular radio format in the U.S., comprises 10% of all music consumed in the U.S., whether digital streaming or physical purchases (The Nielsen Company 2017).
