Page 8 CRAIN’S DETROIT BUSINESS July 2, 2007 OPINION Straighten up and fly right, Northwest

etro Detroit has a paradox. Its airport is world-class, M but its dominant airline, Northwest Airlines is post- ing a service record that has to be one of the country’s worst. One of Detroit’s competitive advantages is Detroit Metro- politan Airport. With all airlines combined, Detroit offers non- stop service to 160 destinations. But it’s no advantage at all if business can’t depend on reliable, on-time service. The hundreds of recent flight cancellations and the callous handling of customer complaints by airline employees is an on-the-ground airline disaster. Northwest’s executives need to create an emergency plan to improve labor relations, on-time service and customer satis- faction. If it cannot satisfy customers, the Wayne County Air- port Authority Board which operates Detroit Metropolitan Airport must strategically use the construction of new facili- ties to replace the Smith Terminal as an opportunity to in- crease airline service competitive with Northwest’s. Northwest emerged from bankruptcy on June 1 with a new stock offering and plans to reinvest in new aircraft, including LLETTERSETTERS 18 new aircraft for nonstop service to China. But pricey rewards for Northwest execs, including nearly $27 million for CEO Doug Steenland, rankled employees who Levin support helped riverfront took pay cuts as part of the airline’s bankruptcy restructuring.
