Kick Sports Camp - May Half Term Over three days of the May Half term we are hoping to run a Kick London Sports camp for Year 1 and 2 age children (not solely DVIS). Some of you will know that Kick London come to school each week to lead Dance and PE for part of the Year 1 and 2 curriculum. Currently we are working out the details but hope this offer will be something we can send to you soon.

DVIS Gardens At DVIS we are very fortunate to have such beautiful grounds. We have gardeners that support the upkeep and development of the flowerbeds and plants in school and who take great pride in their work. We ask that you ensure your children are not climbing over flowerbeds and living plants as they wait to start school or leave to go home. Similarly, we will be speaking to the children in school when they play at lunch and break time. Thank you.

DVIS and Diversity This year the team at DVIS have been focussing on diversity within school and the classroom, especially with regards to race and heritage. A great deal of work has taken place on many levels. Personal levels: challenging our unconscious bias and checking ourselves and our practices. School level: training and support for the school team, updating resources to reflect our diverse community and development of the curriculum, series of lessons and role models in plans for teaching and learning throughout the year. Community level: The establishing of the DVIS Diversity Group which has been looking at the link between the work in school and the parent community.

As a result of the work we have undertaken, we have a few opportunities for parents in the coming month or two.

Stay and Plays The aims of the Stay and Plays are to encourage and enable our community of parents to mix and get to know one another. At times parents have reported feeling excluded or ignored and this is something we would like to change. We know that in society people are treated differently because of the colour of their skin, their disability, gender or economic status. I am certain many of us would challenge that and say that is not right or fair. At DVIS we encourage the children to play and learn together every day. It does not always work, we have good days and bad days. We do always talk to them about being inclusive, kind and fair. I am sure you will agree, as parents we would expect our children to play and learn with others no matter what. Therefore, our hopes for the Stay and Plays is to encourage this attitude of inclusivity beyond the children and throughout our community and that we would enjoy getting to know one another, support each other and have some fun! These one-off sessions will be held after school and will be a chance for parents and children to mix in the playground. We hope you can enjoy the space, bring your own refreshments and stay after school until 4:15pm that day. Bring on the sunshine!

Speaker and Panel Event - “How do we continue the conversations about diversity at home?” During the final week of this half term we hope to host an event with a visiting speaker. The title of the session will be “How do we continue the conversations about diversity at home?” We will be running this session on zoom and will be thinking about how we can challenge and change the unconscious bias we have. More information to follow! Another session we will host either that week or in the coming months is "How do we talk to our children about diversity?" A chance to explore how to answer some of those difficult questions and talk to our children positively about difference.

New collection of Home Reading Books Following a generous donation from the PTFA we are excited to have new reading books for the children to take home. Over the last year our book collection has diminished and has started to look rather tatty! So, in addition to the books, we have also invested in plastic book covers to extend the life and protect our wonderful collection. We would appreciate your support in caring for our books and keeping them away from water bottles whenever possible. We know the children will enjoy reading the new exciting titles that are in line with their phonics development.

Family Cycling group on Facebook The Streetspace changes in Dulwich have led to many more families choosing to cycle to school. If you’d like to get involved, but aren’t sure exactly how to make it work for your family then 'Dulwich Family Cycling' facebook group has been set up by some local parents to share information and experience to help more people get on their bikes.

Perhaps you need advice on child seats or trailers, or you’ve seen a follow-me tandem and wonder if it could work for you? Maybe you want ideas on where you could cycle to from Dulwich on a family ride. If this sounds helpful please join the group https://www.facebook.com/groups/791966234680419/

PTFA News Call for Volunteers In anticipation of the easing of Covid restrictions as the summer goes on, the PTFA is looking for volunteers to help with tasks and events after Easter. Our very small team who has kept things ticking over during the last year while Covid has restricted our usual programme, needs more help in order to deliver fun for our children and their families as well as raise much needed funds during the summer term. Whatever your talents, if you have a few hours you can spare, please email us at [email protected]
