  • Contribution to the Estimation of Seismic Hazard
ACTIVE FAULT SYSTEMS IN THE SHABLA REGION (BULGARIA) AS INTERPRETED ON GEOPHYSICAL AND SEISMICITY DATA* IRINA STANCIU1,3, DUMITRU IOANE2,3 1 National Institute for Research and Development on Marine Geology and Geo-ecology – GeoEcoMar, Bucharest, [email protected] 2 Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, University of Bucharest, [email protected] 3 Romanian Society of Applied Geophysics Shabla region is located in NE Bulgaria and belongs from the tectonic point of view to the south-eastern part of the Moesian Platform. The study area covers parts of the eastern slope of the North Bulgarian arch, having the Bulgarian–Romanian border to the north, Cape Kaliakra to the south, Dobrich city to the west, and the Black Sea shelf to the east. Block faulting, horsts and grabens of different rank are the typical structural features. The crustal-scale Intramoesian Fault, considered to separate the Moesian Platform in two main compartments, reaches the Black Sea continental shelf in Shabla region, its path being ambiguously located on maps, as it does not outcrop. Analysis of regional seismicity data available from ROMPLUS Earthquake Catalogue and EMSC Earthquake Catalogue, integrated with available tectonic and geophysical data, as well as with geological, geomorphological and neotectonic field observations, offered the possibility to interpret W–E, NE–SW and NW–SE active fault systems within the study area and build the grounds for a much more comprehensive understanding of this region’s tectonics. Key words: geophysical data interpretation, regional seismicity, active faults, regional tectonics, Moesian Platform. 1. INTRODUCTION 2. GEOTECTONIC AND GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK This study started during the bilateral scientific 2.1.

  • Patterns of Late Quaternary Megafaunal Extinctions in Europe and Northern Asia
Cour. Forsch.-Inst. Senckenberg | 259 | 287 – 297 | 2 Figs | Frankfurt a. M., 13. 12. 2007 Patterns of Late Quaternary megafaunal extinctions in Europe and northern Asia With 2 figs Anthony J. STUART & Adrian M. LISTER A b s t r a c t This paper summarizes the results so far of our ‘Late Quaternary Megafaunal Extinctions’ project, focussing on an assessment of latest available dates for selected target species from Europe and northern Asia. Our approach is to directly radiocarbon-date material of extinct megafauna to construct their spatio-temporal histories, and to seek correlations with the environmental and archaeological records with the aim of estab- lishing the cause or causes of extinction. So far we have focussed on Mammuthus primigenius, Coelodonta antiquitatis, and Megaloceros giganteus, and are accumulating data on Panthera leo/spelaea, Crocuta crocuta and Ursus spelaeus. Attempts to date Palaeoloxodon antiquus and Stephanorhinus hemitoechus (from southern Europe) were largely unsuccessful. The pattern of inferred terminal dates is staggered, with extinctions occurring over ca. 30 millennia, with some species previously thought extinct in the Late Pleistocene – M. primigenius and M. giganteus – surviving well into the Holocene. All species show dramatic range shifts in response to climatic/vegeta- tional changes, especially the beginning of the Last Glacial Maximum, Late Glacial Interstadial, Allerød, Younger Dryas and Holocene, and there was a general trend of progressive range reduction and fragmenta- tion prior to final extinction. With the possible exceptions of P. antiquus, S. hemitoechus and Homo nean- derthalensis, extinctions do not correlate with the appearance of modern humans. However, although most of the observed patterns can be attributed to environmental changes, some features – especially failures to recolonize – suggest human involvement.

  • Day of the Bulgarian National Revival Leaders
Day of the Bulgarian National Revival Leaders On October 29th," Aleko Konstantinov" Primary school marked the Day of the Leaders of the Bulgarian National Revival. Students from 6th grade acquainted their classmates with the history of this holiday and its celebration. Once again, people from Plovdiv have a reason to be proud, because this day was celebrated for the first time here - in Plovdiv, in 1909. Our city has given a lot of famous Bulgarian leaders contributing to the revival movement - Najden Guerov , Hristo Danov Yoakim Dr. Chimayo, Avksentij Veleshki and others. Days dedicated to the celebration include a variety of events. Sixth graders had a meeting with Mr. Luke Stanchev, who presented the film "Bulgarian sanctuaries in Albania." Students from 5th and 6th grade organized an exhibition dedicated to the Bulgarian leaders . Elena Penisheva - the school librarian - presented books on the life and work of the Bulgarian National Revival Leaders. Daniela Gencheva - history teacher Contest " We are tolerant " Dear classmates, teachers and parents, On the occasion of November 16th - The International Day of Tolerance , we decided to organize a series of initiatives to show everyone that we accept and understand differences among people. We know how to respect, we are well-intentioned, we strive to help those in need. We believe that if you look for the good in everyone, you will find it in yourself. We decided to start our campaign with a contest for an essay or a drawing on the topic " We are tolerant ." Express your ideas in words or colours. The best works will be presented in the exhibition and on the pages of the school newspaper.
