Smith Re: Research at Blackstocks Battlefield Dear George: This letter report is to bring you up to date on the field work we conducted at Blackstocks Plantation Battlefield as part of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation’s contribution to my Revolutionary War Research fund (Snow’s Island Fund) within the University of South Carolina Research Foundation. First, let me again thank you, and the Palmetto Conservation Foundation for your contribution. Through such funds, I have the rare flexibility to conduct “pure” research, directing my efforts wherever they can make the greatest long term impact and investment. After discussing your research interests in the Blackstocks Battlefield and how they might overlap with my research at Snow’s Island, you will remember that we decided that the primary emphasis of the current effort should be focused toward establishing a better understanding of the Blackstocks battlefield and toward obtaining an archaeological sample of material culture from the battle. -

To this end it brings together materials collected from all accessible sources; it shows the kinds of armor which each nation has been using in the Great War, what practical tests they will resist, of what materials they are made, and what they have done in saving life and limb. As an introduction to these headings there has now been added a section which deals with ancient armor; this enables us to contrast the old with the new and to indicate, in clearer perspective, what degree of success the latest armor may achieve in its special field. -

THE TALE of GENJI a Japanese Classic Illuminated the TALE of GENJI a Japanese Classic Illuminated
THE TALE OF GENJI a japanese classic illuminated THE TALE OF GENJI a japanese classic illuminated With its vivid descriptions of courtly society, gar- dens, and architecture in early eleventh-century Japan, The Tale of Genji—recognized as the world’s first novel—has captivated audiences around the globe and inspired artistic traditions for one thou- sand years. Its female author, Murasaki Shikibu, was a diarist, a renowned poet, and, as a tutor to the young empress, the ultimate palace insider; her monumental work of fiction offers entry into an elaborate, mysterious world of court romance, political intrigue, elite customs, and religious life. This handsomely designed and illustrated book explores the outstanding art associated with Genji through in-depth essays and discussions of more than one hundred works. The Tale of Genji has influenced all forms of Japanese artistic expression, from intimately scaled albums to boldly designed hanging scrolls and screen paintings, lacquer boxes, incense burners, games, palanquins for transporting young brides to their new homes, and even contemporary manga. The authors, both art historians and Genji scholars, discuss the tale’s transmission and reception over the centuries; illuminate its place within the history of Japanese literature and calligraphy; highlight its key episodes and characters; and explore its wide-ranging influence on Japanese culture, design, and aesthetics into the modern era. 368 pages; 304 color illustrations; bibliography; index THE TALE OF GENJI THE TALE OF GENJI a japanese classic illuminated John T. Louis the Xivth to Napoleon Department
MUSÉE DE L’ARMÉE General presentation of department Department from Louis the XIVth to Napoleon III « From Louis XIV to Napoleon I » (part I) The modern department of the Army Museum illustrates the History of France’s armies from Louis 14th reign (1643-1715) up until the surrender of Napoleon III. The entrance is located in the main court of the Invalides National Hostel. The exhibition rooms, located in the east wing, take up the great dining halls on the ground floor as well as the second floor. This document presents only the rooms from Louis the XIVth to Napoleon Ist (1643-1815). The monument itself belongs to the theme and the chronology of the department in two counts : the Hostel was built at the request of Louis 14th to accommodate his invalid soldiers ; the main court displays 60 pieces of artillery, among which the most ancient, the Combattant (fighter), was melted in 1674, and the most recent, the Alma, in 1855 ; last but not least, Napoleon’s tomb is located under the golden dome of the Saint-Louis des Invalides church. The ground floor rooms The ground floor consists of two large rooms (former dining halls), ‘Turenne’ and ‘Vauban’, with murals painted by Friquet de Vauroze in 1677-1678. They trace the main episodes of the Wars of Devolution (1667-1668). Turenne refectory is closed to public. The Vauban room (at left as you enter), presents (outside temporary exhibits), in a large central window (33 m.), 13 life-size equestrian models which joined the museum collections between 1897 and 1901.
