DESCRIPTION OF EMPLOYER: The University Health Network (UHN) is comprised of 4 separate sites that together form an outstanding healthcare centre. All sites - , Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute contribute to the goal of providing the best patient care to a diverse and challenging patient population. This particular Physician Assistant position will be assigned to the Division of General Surgery at the Toronto Western Hospital Site. This site has four Faculty General Surgeons, Clinical Fellows and Surgical Residents.

The Division of General Surgery is committed to best practice in General Surgery, developing innovative guidelines and pathways to achieve an evidenced based approach to patient care. There is an active residency program affiliated with the and General Surgery trainees rotate through the Division to learn from the various surgical programs offered. The Toronto Western Hospital is the Central Site for the University of Toronto Collaborative Bariatric Surgical Program and the PA will be very involved in this initiative.

SUMMARY The Physician Assistant will be based at the Toronto Western Site in the Division of General Surgery. The General Surgeons at TWH specialize in Minimally Invasive Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Colorectal Surgery. The PA will function as a vital part of this collaborative team of Surgeons, Nurses, Residents and Fellows providing care to General Surgery patients in a surgeon- extender role. Their role will include, but will not be limited to, day-to-day inpatient care, ambulatory clinic visits and assisting in the Operating Room. The PA will have the opportunity to join a team that focuses on improvement and understands the importance of education and training in each member of the team. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in the Division of General Surgery. There is also potential for involvement in many of the research programs available.

Principal responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for General Surgery patients. This involves collecting and interpreting data about the health of the patient and determining a medical diagnosis. The PA will play a leadership role on the interprofessional team and will have quality improvement, research and administrative responsibilities. Responsibilities will also include coordinating and participating in policy and procedure development as well as education and professional development. They will act as a resource and consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community and other hospital/agencies. The PA will perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS: - Graduate of an Accredited Physician Assistant Education Program - Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC.
