It finds itself at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia; it is bordered by the Black Sea, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia. The capital city of Georgia is Tbilisi. It has a population of around 3.72 million and covers a total area of 70,000 kilometres square approximately. The Georgian government is unitary and semi-presidential in nature and is elected by democratic means. History The classical era saw many independent kingdoms come together and form what we know today as Georgia. Colchis and Iberian kingdoms are recorded to have adopted the Christian faith during the 4th Century CE. Georgia reached the zenith of its eco-political strength under the rule of King David IV in the late 12th and early 13th century. The kingdom then saw steady decline and was dominated by several larger kingdoms like the Ottoman and the Mongols. The Russian empire annexed the entire Georgia by 1810. It experienced a short period of independence in 1918, with the fall of the Russian empire but was invaded again in 1921 by Soviet Russia and became the Georgia Soviet Socialist Republic. It regained its independence in 1991, after the fall of Soviet Russia, but had significant interior strife and economic problems throughout the decade. It is only after the Rose Revolution of 2003 that Georgia followed pro-Western interests and supported the NATO and European Integration. This change in policy led to another Russo-Georgian War in 2008. The country is a member of the UN, and the Council of Europe. 01 About The University The Tbilisi State University was established in the year 1918 by reputed historian of Georgia, Ivane Javakhishvili.
