SEPTEMBER 13, 2020 a From the Desk of Msgr. Cincinnati I am pleased to announce that a few key donors from our parish family have absorbed the total cost for the livestreaming equipment and installation that we have been enjoying in the main Church since late May of this year. On behalf of the entire parish family, I have already expressed our gratitude and deep appreciation for their sense of stewardship. Their generosity saved us a major expense in these COVID days of limited resources! I am convinced our technology capabilities will only increase as we move forward into the future, even after the current pandemic threat is a thing of the past. To that end, I would now like to propose a need for a Parish Tech Support fund. Donations collected would be used specifically for our livestreaming endeavors. As many of us know, computer technology is always being updated with better programs, maintenance, and new equipment on an as needed basis. The creation of a Parish Tech Support program would permit all parishioners an opportunity to be part of our efforts in reaching the homes and hearts of members and friends here in Morgantown, around the State and across our Country. So many parishioners have asked me how they might express their thanks for the Masses they are enjoying from the safety of their homes each week. I envision a Parish Tech Support fund being a meaningful way to promote the work of our parish family in the area of evangelization/ catechesis. Therefore, for the next two weekends (1920 and 2627 September 2020), a second collection basket will be placed near all the regular collection baskets for your gifts that will be used as seed money for the Parish Tech Support fund. Please consider a donation this year to secure our efforts and to enhance our technology as needed.To donate online, visit: giving.parishsoft.com/stfrancis and select fund “Parish Tech Support” from the dropdown menu.     Dear Saint Francis de Sales Family, I am aware that many of you were contacted recently by a group soliciting your participation in sending letters of support for Fr. David Ryan to Cardinal Cupich and Bishop Grob. While I understand the sentiment expressed in that communication, I did not authorize, nor was the pastoral staff consulted with, or communicated to, about this letter. As the letter from Cardinal Cupich stated, the Archdiocese is following procedures used when an allegation is made against a member of the clergy, or a lay employee or volunteer. These include asking the accused to step aside while investigations are conducted. As the Cardinal’s letter also stated, this action is not meant to imply guilt or innocence. These procedures are aligned with national norms for handling allegations of sexual abuse of a minor as expressed in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. We encourage anyone who believes they have been abused by Archdiocese employees to come forward and receive the help they deserve. Only by treating those bringing allegations and the accused in the same respectful Christian manner can we hope to restore trust and achieve healing. Pocetto, OSFS (Paper Presented at the International Patristics, Medieval and Renaissance Conference, Villanova University, 1999) The perennial debate between science and religion appears to be heating up again, especially in the area of evolution where the conflict between the two has been the most pronounced and protracted. Richard Dawkins takes the position that science does not need religion or God to understand the origin and evolution of the universe, while Michael Behe sees the importance of an 'Intelligent Designer' as necessary for filling in a big gap in Darwinism.1 In a recent attempted rapprochement in this area, Pope John Paul II stated that he sees no inherent contradiction between the theory of evolution and Catholic teaching.2 It is not the intent of this study to argue for the complete autonomy of science in the sense of being totally unrelated to religion but rather to appreciate that they both can and should live in harmony. Religion, as one author has clearly, concisely, and persuasively demonstrated, can and should play a confirming role in its relationship to science.3 It is this confirming aspect of religion that will be emphasized. As an outstanding Christian humanist, Francis de Sales steeped himself in the knowledge of Sacred Scripture, the Fathers of the Church and the writers of classical antiquity and exhibited an openness to all genuine human values and achievements.4 The further one delves into the works of this saint, the more one becomes convinced, as Karl Rahner says, that "Christianity is the most radical anthropology."5 For de Sales, the Incarnation is absolutely indispensable to the meaning and understanding of human nature and its relation to the whole of creation since he views the universe as "a book which contains the word of God, but a language which each person does not understand."6 The more we grasp the implications of the Incarnation, the deeper will be our understanding of humanity, our world and the role of the physical sciences.

    Biography of Saint Francis de Sales Feast Day – January 24 (August 21, 1567 – December 28, 1622) Francis was destined by his father to be a lawyer so that the young man could eventually take his elder’s place as a senator from the province of Savoy in France. For this reason Francis was sent to Padua to study law. After receiving his doctorate, he returned home and, in due time, told his parents he wished to enter the priesthood. His father strongly opposed Francis in this, and only after much patient persuasiveness on the part of the gentle Francis did his father finally consent. Francis was ordained and elected provost of the Diocese of Geneva, then a center for the Calvinists. Francis set out to convert them, especially in the district of Chablais. By preaching and distributing the little pamphlets he wrote to explain true Catholic doctrine, he had remarkable success. At 35, he became bishop of Geneva. While administering his diocese he continued to preach, hear confessions, and catechize the children. His gentle character was a great asset in winning souls. He practiced his own axiom, “A spoonful of honey attracts more flies than a barrelful of vinegar.” Besides his two well-known books, the Introduction to the Devout Life and A Treatise on the Love of God , he wrote many pamphlets and carried on a vast correspondence. For his writings, he has been named patron of the Catholic Press. His writings, filled with his characteristic gentle spirit, are addressed to lay people. He wants to make them understand that they too are called to be saints.

Senior Salesian Scholar From Despair to Hope: One College Student’s Struggle with Truth (Francis de Sales, 1567-1622) Lehigh University Newman Center Lecture Wednesday, April 2, 2003 When I was Academic Dean at De Sales University, I once asked one of our students what she thought about the new art instructor we had hired. She replied, "He's a little unusual. He makes us draw the shadows instead of the objects themselves." I remarked, "Well, that seems to me to be a good way of appreciating the light because there are no shadows without light." This novel approach evidently worked well for the instructor, and also for his students. However, in our personal lives there is a danger of focusing on the shadows because we can easily become mesmerized by them and fail to see the light, especially with the current war in Iraq and the threat of terrorism. As one writer observed, "The agony of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane has seemed to many commentators, Christian and otherwise, a profound metaphor for the human condition today."1 The words of one the foremost Catholic theologians of the 20th century still ring true today: Fear mercilessly grips the human throat. It fills the psychiatrists' consulting rooms, populates the psychiatric hospitals, increases the suicide figures, lays blast-bombs, sets off cold wars and hot wars. Scott Peck claims in his opening chapter that "Something Is Seriously Wrong" with our modern world. That something, he argues, is the ever-growing phenomenon of "incivility" or being hurtful to others. In this day and age, where the concern for oneself above all others breeds an infectious materialism and a callous disregard for life, the practice of a true civility — the awareness of and intention to be genuinely good to others — is surely lacking, both in our interpersonal relationships and in our societal institutions. Four centuries ago another popular writer, FRANCIS DE SALES (1567-1622) envisioned a world re-born already through the love of God. Francis' vision of this world is founded on a deep appreciation of the love that God has showered upon us through the gifts of creation and human life, particularly in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Francis believed that beauty and goodness are the hallmarks of our world, as gifts born from God's deep and abiding love for each one of us. Enabled and ennobled by this love, we are capable of much more than we might well imagine. We are capable of living a true life of devotion in this world. We are capable of giving birth to a new world. Francis' spirit has permeated the Christian world. His life story, his written treasury, and his religious legacy — all point to the virtuous qualities of a man imbued with the love of God and desirous of sharing that love with all who would seek it.
