Wagon Days and September Events September is here and August has come to an end, but this doesn’t mean that Sun Valley’s lineup of summer events is over! September brings the Big Hitch Parade, antique fairs and phenomenal performances throughout our Valley. Wagon Days starts off with the Cowboy Poets Recital at the Ore Wagon Museum on Sept. 2nd at 11:00 am and culminates with the iconic Big Hitch Parade at 1:00 pm on Sept. 3rd, the largest non- motorized parade in the west. See over one hundred museum quality wagons, stage coaches, buggies, carriages and the six enormous Lewis Ore Wagons, pulled by a 20 mule jerkline. Antique fairs will also abound throughout the Valley from Sept. 2nd - 5th, at these locations: Hailey’s Antique Market, at Roberta McKercher Park, Hailey Sept 1 - 4 all day Ketchum Antique and Art Show, nexStage Theater, 120 n Main Street, Sept 2 - 4 all day. The California-based rock group Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real will conclude Sun Valley’s 2016 summer concert series on Labor Day, Sept. 5th. The show will open at the Sun Valley Pavilion at 6:00pm, with tickets ranging from $25 for the lawn to $100 for pavilion seats. The Sun Valley Center for the Arts will begin its 2016-17 performing arts series starting September 16th with award winning cabaret performer, Sharron Matthews. Her performance spans a mix of storytelling and mash-up pop songs. Her 2010 “Sharron Matthews Superstar: World Domination Tour 2010” was named “#1 Cabaret in New York City’ by Nightlife Exchange and WPAT Radio, and she was also nominated Touring Artist of the Year by the BC touring council in 2015. -

Creole Modernism
ANKHI MUKHERJEE Creole Modernism As affirmations of the modern go, few can match the high spirits of Susan Stanford Friedman’s invitation to formulate a “planetary epistemology” of modernist studies. As she explains in a footnote, Friedman uses the term “planetarity” in a different sense than Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak in Death of a Discipline, where the latter proposes that “if we imagine ourselves as planetary subjects rather than global agents, planetary creatures rather than global entities, alterity remains underived from us.”1 If Spivak’s planet-thought is a “utopian gesture of resistance against globalization as the geohistorical and economic domination of the Global South,” Friedman’s own use of the term ‘planetarity’ is epistemological, implying “a consciousness of the earth as planet, not restricted to geopolitical formations and potentially encompassing the non-human as well as the human.”2 Friedman’s planetary epistemology needs the playground of “modernism/modernity,” the slash denoting a simultaneous separation and connection, “the paradox of all borders,” which she considers to be richly generative (475). For modernism is not simply outside or after modernity, a belated reaction to the shock of it. It is contained within modernity (or particular modernities) as its aesthetic domain, and interacts with other domains, commercial, technological, societal, and governmental. It follows that “Every modernity has its distinctive modernism” (475). Pluralizing the key terms to engage with the polylogue of languages and cultures issuing from forms of modernism/modernity everywhere, Friedman’s invocation of this transformational (planetary) model of cultural circulation opens up possibilities for modernist studies to venture fearlessly outside the Anglo-American field and into “elsewhere” places that constitute modernism’s Other: the colonies and ex- colonies of South Asia and the Caribbean, the American South, and the Diaspora. -

Puerto Rico has always been considered a bridge nation between the Caribbean and the North American colossus. The development of national identity in Puerto Rico has implied a series of contradictions which are reflected in its national literature. Many critics have pointed out that Puerto Rican literature is split between two shores: Puerto Rican literature written by island authors and the more recent Puerto Rican literature written in the United States by the sons and daughters of the different migratory waves along the twentieth century. Puerto Rican literature on the island has been characterized by a number of recurrent themes concerning the definition of cultural and national identity as a way to solve the contradiction of being a Caribbean nation that is still US territory yet culturally and linguistically different. -

Meranto As the black protest movement swept north in the middle years of the 1960s, a major shift was to take place in its basic theme and fundamental direction that transferred emphasis from the familiar exhortation to demand "freedom now" to an equally urgent summons to marshal the formidable, if un tapped, resources of "black power" in the struggle for liberation. This alteration in both informing idea and effective method signified conclusively that blacks, grown angry and frustrated over the slow rate of their social and economic prog ress as an oppressed minority, were finally prepared to realize their potential force in order to exercise a decisive measure of po litical control over their own lives. As a call to action, black power reflected a growing sense of community among blacks, a fresh awareness of shared experience and a common heritage. More importantly, however, it was both a challenge posed by blacks to themselves to gain some increased measure of control over the institutions of that community, and an appeal for black solidarity and concerted political action as the essential means to that end. An increased concentration of blacks in the major cities of the northern and western United States had come about as the direct result of one of the most significant demographic changes to occur in the nation in the twentieth century. -

The dissertation examines plays by these authors and illustrates how the plays clearly stand apart from mainstream modern French-language African theater. The introduction, in Chapter 1 provides an explanation of the meaning that has been assigned to the term “new African theater.” It presents an overview of the various innovative structural and linguistic techniques new theater playwrights use that render their work avant-garde. The chapter also studies how new theater playwrights differ from mainstream ones, especially in the way they address and present their concerns regarding the themes of oppression, rebellion, and the outcome of rebellion. The information provided in this chapter serves as a springboard to the primary focus of the dissertation, which is a detailed theoretical and textual analysis of experimental strategies used by the three playwrights in the areas of theme, form, and language. -
